They are indeed flap type handles.

Had seen this design in some concepts and models in BMW, but it seemed like just a recess with sensors. But this one looks proper mechanical handles.

About time. Pull type handles while good to use, are an eyesore most of the time. Like almirah handles jutting out. And the flush door handles Range Rover/XUV700 are a long term suspect.

I prefer the flap type handles. They make the car look streamlined. Also I like having motions in different directions for different functions i.e. lift upwards to unlock and then pull to open rather than the jerky pull in one direction of pull handles.

I had not thought of the mechanical operation. Knowing how these Germans design things, I won't be surprised if there is some electrical sensor doing the actual opening of the door latch. I'm glad to see these back as a design. They look elegant.
