Going by these pics, it doesn’t come close to the bigger boys playing the segment i.e. Ford’s Endy and Toyota’s Fortuner in terms of stance or the build.
This is more of a urban SUV and doesn’t seem like it’s going to withstand the forces of nature when thrown off-road :) IMHO!
Perhaps, M&M do not want to replicate the scenario of previous gen Rexton sold by Sangyong in partnership with M&M.
Rather, they seem to be using a different approach by just changing bits and pieces of the car and release it with cheetah dominated tag, the XUV7OO!

Seems like this is a Ssangyong branded vehicle. There is no ugly mahindra grill.
Two more images from the same pic set, snapped during a TVC shoot:
When is the launch. Must be near since they are shooting for TVC.

I don't think that these are from a TV commercial shoot, because the vehicle has a masked badge and the grille isn't Mahindra's.
Unless they plan on wasting money on digital effects replacing the grille after the shoot, that is. Unlikely, in my opinion.
Also is it stuck? Are we looking at it in reverse? Maybe if t got stuck or died in the dunes during testing and then went to the engineers to be fixed. Guesswork, insiders would know best. Please update if you do.

I used to think so too.
Picking up a used Scorpio S10 and then discovering it has climate control, puddle lamps, automatic lights and wipers and a vastly improved ride quality over the elderly scorpio cabs and boleros was an interesting experience.
Entirely willing to give them the benefit of doubt here. And buy when it comes into the used car market too (I don’t buy new)

In the last picture, the car seems to be stuck. The axles are touching the sand. Yet there doesn't seem to be any sign of struggle (wheel-spin and digging).

The pictures seems highly unlikely from a TVC shoot as the Company’s logos on the grill & at the rear are still camouflaged, unless they are planning to change it later with CGI like the infamous Henry Cavill moustache removal from the Justice League movie.
This is stuck indeed, they are associating it with TVC because they do not want to spoil the 4x4 badge name that despite of having 4x4 or 4WD it got stuck. Smart from M&M.
Spotted this car in Samta Nagar, Kandivali today. This area is just further to the Mahindra factory.
We were unable to take clear pictures because of the rains. But this is what we caught.
As you can see from the images, the badges were all camouflaged.
The dimensions appeared to be pretty decent, noticeably greater than the XUV.
One thing to be noticed is that the driver could not execute a 'U' turn effortlessly, he had to move the vehicle back and forth a couple of times.
Indigenization is taking time to alleviate the rexton-like A.S.S fears. Active work is in progress and a lot of x-platform help has made it relatively easier for migrating the Y400 to a 'Desi fit and feel.'
Fortuner and Endeavour is the target audienc, that much is confirmed. So the prices may be marginally less than the aforementioned brands, but not by a whole lot.
On an aside the Tivoli has been canned for now and the US-Designed MP has hit the floor. This is a replacement for the XYLO with a new 4 cyl 1.5 diesel and a 1.5 petrol. This seems to be the same engine that will do Duty in the Tivoli.
The latest update is that the MPV was pushed into production this month and should be ready for public launch by Ganapati festival.
Unfortunately this also means that the Tivoli will now see the light of day much much later... December? Maybe.
February, let's see.

Apart from being of a similar size and the intention of targeting the same market segment, Rexton would have a tough time against the Endy or Fortuner.
That said it will make it up with being priced a lot lower. The question is would that be enough to convince buyers to spare 20 lacs plus for one of these?!
M&M will have to price it really competitive in order to shift volumes. On the other hand if they are simply happy with assembling a handful of numbers then prospective buyers will question the long term commitment to the model. The previous Rexton being withdrawn in 4 years would have left a bad after taste. Another challenge is the strengthening Korean Won, the currency fluctuation will have a direct affect on margins.
I think Mahindra will introduce this into the market with a sub 20 lac introductory price tag, load it with plenty of equipment and also a comprehensive long term service/warranty package.
