One car called city cat has been launched by tata, though this is a car built for a different purpose[running on hot air],car fits the one lakh car tag descrition by tuskhy given earlier to some extent,so there maybe similarities

Somehow I am not convinced that this car is a Tata. Multiple reasons.
1> Tatas have just a couple of month's back tied up with the french guy (don't remember his name) and already this car is ready? Unbelievable.
2> A left hand drive Tata? Have they ever made one? And this being a prototype built in India has a left hand drive?
2> Why does it sport a Taxi sign on the top?

Edit: Look at the front portion. Looks like an alien to me

The logo on the bonnet looks like Renault to me.

Good observation Zappo.

Along the lines of mail4ajo's thought, I'd reckon this is a French design.

It does seem it is TATA.

See: Indian air-powered City Cat car prepares for production run - Engadget

Quote:
The first commercial car to be powered by compressed air could be about to hit the production lines, as Indian automaker Tata Motors prepares to build ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre's design. We're not certain if it's the same air car that we hit just under three years ago, but if it is, it's about time! The City Cat runs on nothing but compressed air -- which can be refueled at "air stations," and overnight using a built-in compressor -- with a not too shabby top speed of 68MPH and a range of 125 miles. The Air Car designers are working on a hybrid version that can compress air while it's operating, potentially making cross-India journeys possible: Toyota Prius, eat your hybrid heart out. As EcoGeek points out, the game ain't up just yet for completely emissions free travel since the problem of the source of the electricity (usually acquired from fossil fuels) has yet to be solved. Plus, the fugly design really doesn't do it any favours: why does "green" have to mean "gah?"

Tatas have tied up with the french engineer. Thats known. They may also bring out a car based on the technology. However in less than 6 months of tie up this car could not be made ready. Also, the articles never mention that this is the car that Tatas have developed. The logo on the bonnet is anything but Tata. Tata logo is oval whereas this one has an inverted tear-drop logo. Uhuh... its all hot air.

Don't tell me you are suggesting that the Tatas will launch their Indiva Concept as the 1 lakh car...

If this is a 1 lakh car, they will eat into their own line up- do you think anyone will buy the indica or other cars from the TATA stable if they give this 1000cc car for 1 lac? The last I heard about the 1 lac car was that it was a 600cc car with no front doors but tarpaulins instead (remember the old jeeps?) and it will be 1.5 lac on road...I believe maruti is the only manufacturer who can make a 1 lac car on road.

Gopz..! Wake Up...from Maruti Land..!

With High localization the cost of any car can be reduced significantly.

The TATA One lac car will host a 600 cc Engine, Will come in two varients - One AC and other without.

In all likely hood, It will be moulded Fibre with Steel re-inforcements-All TATA parts are localised and resourced.

So the Cost reduction will be emmense + Maruti sells you the 800 cheap because the 800 line set up way back in 1987-88 has already claimed its depriciation benefits and the cost has been recovered almost over the actual investments.

In practise..It ideally would not cost over 1,20,000 to make a 800 ( Non AC) but Exise and Tax and Fluctuation of Material Costs , ensure that manufacturers keep a significant buffer.

TATA is No Fool, I'm sure they have employed some of the best analysts and Production Planning experts to ensure that the Dream does come True...!
