Re: Which car comes to your mind when you think of a segment?

These choices are purely based on brand recall when I think of a particular segment. In most cases, my head will take over and zero down on some other car.

Entry-level hatchback - Alto
Mid-level hatchback - Swift
Premium hatchback - i20
Performance hatchback - GT TSI

Compact sedan - Dzire
Mid-size sedan - City
Full-size sedan - Superb

Crossover - Creta
20 lakh SUV - Scorpio
40 lakh SUV - Fortuner
Luxury SUV - Range Rover

Entry-level luxury sedan - 3 Series
Mid-level luxury sedan - E Class
Premium luxury sedan - S Class

Re: Which car comes to your mind when you think of a segment?

Here goes my list. This will be strictly based on what I have driven and owned in India or have driven a significant amount here. Hence the list will contain a few cars that are no longer available. I will also skip the higher segment cars since I have very limited experience of driving them in India.

Entry-level hatchback: Maruti Suzuki Zen (the original one, a great little car to drive that I never owned. I should have bought this when I actually got the Maruti 800 that I'd consider the next best in this segment.).

Mid-level hatchback: Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (all-round utility car given its price and size, very good space and storage management. Ease of entry and exit for all ages. I owned this.).

Premium hatchback: Hyundai Getz (the first car that introduced this segment in India. Ride quality was equal to or better than a few C-segment sedans. I owned a petrol version.).

Performance hatchback: VW Polo GT TSI (a great driver's car, I currently own the 1.2 TSI version. Great build and quality.).

Compact sedan: Honda Amaze (I am not personally fond of this segment and never considered owning something in this segment. But I like the current Amaze because of the packaging and space management.).

C-segment sedan: Honda City (I currently own a 2012 3rd generation Honda City. It still drives like new. For ease of driving, space, storage, bullet-proof reliability, overall refinement, I cannot think of anything better in its price range.).

Cross-over: Maruti S-Cross (the only diesel I ever considered buying seriously in my life, especially the 1.6 l version. Very good build and over-all package. I also considered the Ford Ecosport but I felt cramped for space inside, otherwise really great at its price.).

Entry/mid-level MPV: Toyota Innova (on vacation in India we never rent anything else. These days we are only two people, me and my wife, if travelling within India, twice or thrice a year (obviously Covid months excluded). So it is not for the space, but for the safe and comfortable feeling it gives us overall. We make sure, it's a new car and preferably from the hotel we are staying in. But I'd never like to own one though. Too big for our daily purposes.).

D-segment MPV: Skoda Superb (a really superb car for comfort, space and overall package. This is owned by one of my nephews. I think this car is really value for money for its price.).

I shall stop there. I have very little experience of driving cars from luxury segments in India. Also, oddly I am not a great fan of SUVs. Perhaps I do not have enough experience in those things. I am 61 years of age, and it may be too late for me to try one. I am from the generation of sedans and station wagons.

Re: Which car comes to your mind when you think of a segment?

I prefer fundamentals(safety & engine-transmission) over fancy features as the latter loses novelty over 1-2 years of ownership. Hence my preference/suggestions is in following order.

Entry level hatch- Tiago
Premium hatch- Polo for driving enthusiasts, Jazz for single family car
Sedan- City
Subcompact crossover- Nexon/Ecosport(AT)
Mid size SUV- Harrier
Butch SUV- Endeavour

Not a fan of Marutis and Hyundais because of their compromised India specific bodyshells.

Would need to rethink the Seltos bit as the safety rating per GNCAP is a sorry 3.

Re: Which car comes to your mind when you think of a segment?

My list would be something like this:

Entry level Hatchback - Wagon R

Premium Hatchback - Hyunda i20 or VW Polo

Hot Hatchback - Polo GTI

Entry level Sedan - Swift Dezire/ Ford Aspire

Compact SUV - Ford Ecosport. Even after so many years, it looks the part as compared to any of the other competitors.

Compact MPV - MAruti XL6

Mid level SUV - Nissan Kicks. Seltos out of the window due to poor crash ratings.

High level SUV - Ford Endeavour

Premium Sedan - BMW 3 series and 5 series

Pick Up Truck - No idea about the segment, really. I guess, the D Max V Cross?

Entry level sports - BMW 330i

High level sports - Porsche 911, any of the myriad variants.

Luxury Sedan/SUV - Maybach / RR Cullinan
