Doesn't come as a surprise, Fiat has mastered the art of making a reliable smaller capacity diesel engine which is better in terms of driveability, NVH and also handling abuse to some extent. Having two fiat engine cars in our family, I can say that they are too resilient when it comes to abuse- be it delayed oil changes or driving harshly in bad conditions- to the point that it eliminates any premonitions you have about owning a diesel car.

Add to that the MJD engine has a lot of patented tech which makes it difficult for others to use it 'as is', so it will be interesting to see what Maruti Suzuki comes up with. Just wish they had MJD-II released.

I think this is the last leg of the Maruti-1.3L MJD deal. Sometime in the future, Maruti will turn to Toyota for diesels. Remember, the Toyota-Suzuki partnership was all about tech access as Suzuki is too small a global player to invest in emerging technologies (full hybrids, fuel cells, autonomous driving etc.).

Maruti's sheer volumes should also help bring a better small Toyota diesel here. The current 1.4L feels too old now.

That's exactly what I wanted to highlight. Euro-6 MJD-II which is available since 2009 is not being brought to India till 2020, they are waiting for BS-VI implementations to come into effect. Auto manufacturers have all the technology in place but they won't act proactively, infact they will cry during 2020 deadline for sops/extensions/leeway/lesser time/compensation and what not sort of stuff, this is what I hate most.

While its true but to be fair to OEMs, do we have upgraded fuel (BS VI) available to run the vehicles efficiently on BS VI engines ?

I believe Oil companies will have to make significant investment in making the BS VI fuel available even by 2020 (which was earlier planned to be introduced in 2024). So it is not just the engines or the intent of the OEMs, the entire ecosystem has to be upgraded.

Automakers will also have to make changes to critical components like diesel filters , selective catalytic reduction module to suit peculiar Indian conditions, where average running speeds are lower than other developed markets like Europe, US. So there are challenges

New twist in the FIAT engine supplies to Maruti Suzuki.

The new 2.0 litre Multijet diesel engine will power the upcoming Jeep, Fiat, Tata and Martuti Suzuki vehicles. ( Grand Vitara, Kizashi ?..)

Financial express reports that Maruti Suzuki has signed a deal with FIAT to buy 2.0 l diesel engine(1.5 lakh in quantity) and not the 1.3 l MJD as reported earlier.

Quote:

Fiat India has been supplying its tried and tested 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine to car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors for years. The engine is now powering enough cars in the country to be labelled as the national engine of the country.

In a further development, the company has signed a new agreement with the two automakers in the country, by which Fiat will supply around 2.2 lakh units of its 2.0 litre Multijet turbodiesel diesel engine and not the 1.3 litre unit as reported by Economic Times.

Link

Which car will Maruti plonk the 2.0 MJD apart from Grand Vitara. It will be way too big an engine for the current line up of cars and 2.2 lakh units of the 2.0 MJD I feel even considering domestic and exports numbers would be able to fulfilled in 3 years.

I believe this is an error from Financial Express.

So soon we will get to see the Grand Vitara(?) and Maruti challenging the C/D-SUV segment.

If true, this might not happen -

Fiat will continue to remain Suzuki's diesel engine partner, even for smaller engines.

Also, if true, it means Suzuki sees lot of potential in Rs. 20 to Rs. 30 lakh (on road price) SUV segment in the future. Say hello to Suzuki Grand Vitara!

The volume offtake (2.2 Lakhs) of engines for Tata/Suzuki is likely to be spread over many years though.

As per ET the contract is for three years, supplying 1.5L units Maruti and 70K to Tata.
Both looks quite ambitious for the segment.

That is exactly what I posted earlier. Grand Vitara at 20 lakhs would not see it do 4.1K units a months including domestic market and exports to have 50000 engines per year. Looks a bit far fetched.

This may be a classic case of wrong reporting from the media houses. :Frustrati

As per this specs from Autocar UK, I don't see 2.0L MJD on Suzuki Vitara. Is Suzuki planning to introduce it in near future on Vitara? Or am I missing something here? May be wrong reporting by journos and press.

Not Vitara but a new Grand Vitara is speculated to be coming.

Yes Agree, 1.5 lakh units over 3 years. They are surely going to plonk this in S-cross. No way Vitara and Kizashi will do 1.5 lakh units in 3 years. The 2.0 MJD will be a bigger monster than the 1.6 MJD that powers the S-cross. Powering it with 2.0 MJD made in India will be way cheaper than using the imported 1.6 MJD and will allow for higher localization of the S-cross.

This will be for the S-cross. No way they will sell 1.5 lakh units over 3 years with Kizashi and Grand Vitara

Looks like report by Financial Express is correct,
Maruti’s Petrol-Diesel sales break-up is available here Link

Maruti’s annual requirement of 1.3 Multijet engines is well above 4.2 lac units. They have 3 lac annual in-house licensed capacity and additional requirements are met by Fiat India. This new contract of 1.5 lac units for three years seems too low to fulfill Maruti’s ever growing requirement of 1.3ltr engines.
This contract indeed could be for 2ltr diesel engines unless they have taken additional in-house production license for 1.3ltr engines

They (Fiat India) sell some 220 cars a month and talk of supplying 2.2 lakh engines to Maruti and Tata. That's something like playing a surrogate role here in making the brands successful by proxy. I would bet that about 40 to 50 % of the Maruti and Tata car buyers would not even be aware that there is a Fiat engine under the bonnet.

The car buying public rejects Fiat as a brand, while the irony is that the Fiat engine powers about 30 to 40 % of the cars made in India.

Also queer are Fiat India's marketing strategies. With more than two decades in the Indian market, they have been unable to grasp the marketing strategies that need to be adapted here. They are not able to drive home the point that their engine is so successful in India.

Their simple marketing mantra could have been "India's most successful engine mated to a robustly build body shell." The competitor (Maruti) makes body shells that crumple upon being impacted even by a two wheeler.

Added to the woes, are the not-so- friendly "after sales" by Fiat dealers, that compound the company's problems.

Adapting the escapist route, they now with much fanfare, announce the launch of brand "Jeep" in India. There is no talk of strengthening Fiats presence in India as a car maker.

Maruti Suzuki draws plans for taking on XUV and the likes of TATA Hexa . Plans for a 2020 launch.

Will it be the FIAT 2.0l engine as speculated?

The vehicle is being developed on Suzuki’s Fifth Generation C Platform and is scheduled to go into production in 2020.
