I'd take that report with a pinch (heap) of salt.
Two reasons:
1. MSIL won't plonk a powerful engine on Ertiga/Ciaz. Maybe for the S-Cross in limited numbers.
2. MSIL has Toyota's(which is probably the greatest car brand in the world) backing- why would they go to Fiat if that's the case? I'm sure there's some small diesel engine which can be made BS 6 compliant.

Re-packaging the S Cross or Vitara with Toyota diesels will consume lots of R&D, time and costs.
Both these cars were with 1.6(D) FIAT engines in the past, only the BS6 part will need to be tested. Who knows, probably FIAT is giving them at a lucrative price seeing the volumes projected of the new cars with this engines.

Probably S Cross could be launched with the 1.6D meeting the BS6 timeline.

Anyways here is the proof of the engine being tested:

If yes, then very smart of Fiat. They've always been lethargic with their own cars but pro-active in their engine business.

Maruti has no products to speak of in the higher segments of the market, it's better it sticks to core strengths and improve upon them. The higher segments of the market are best left to Toyota to cater to. Maruti is basically made its name as a mass market company, that makes, refined, fuel efficient and trouble free cars for the entry and mid level segments. I'd like them to bring more of their really 'funky' kei cars that they reserve for the Japanese market and Wow Indians with them, do away with the AMT's and bring CVT's: that's the one and only way Maruti can go up market. Borrowing engines from FIAT and spending precious resources in segments where it has no products and experience: Kizashi and Grand Vitara aren't international runaway hit's. It must bring products like the Suzuki Jimny which is doing very well. People may not be able to digest a powerful, drivers car or SUV from the Maurti stable delivering 6-7 kmpl in the city and 11-12 kmpl on the highway: that's Toyota Territory.
