There have been conflicting news stories around this. Some interpretations are that:
a) Tata and Maruti Suzuki both ordered supply of 2.0 L diesel engines
If this is the case, then Maruti Suzuki can get economies of scale only by plonking the engine into both the Ciaz and S-cross. That would mean a different gearbox. The cost of import of a 1.6 L Diesel engine would be more than or comparable to a locally produced 2.0 L Fiat Diesel engine
b) Tata signed up for the supply of 2.0 L Multijet engines and Maruti signed up for the 1.3 L Multijet engines

Conflicting views so far

Will it be the FIAT 2.0l engine as speculated?

Maruti Suzuki is planning its transformation strategy and will be known in a couple of weeks - A strategy to make it more 'Premium' and moving away from its 'entry level' car-maker tag.
In this context Maruti will be looking at new segments and could bring in already existing global products not yet launched in India.

Maruti Suzuki has already placed an order for a large number of the 2.0-litre Multijet turbocharged diesel engine, the one that powers the Jeep Compass. The 2.0-litre Multijet is available in different states of tune from 110bhp to 190bhp of power and with the Compass it has demonstrated its ability to handle four-wheel drive as well.

This clearly indicates that Maruti Suzuki might have already started developing new products and has managed to keep the news under the wraps. With the quantum of engines ordered, it is likely that the new platform might spawn a D-segment sedan like the Hyundai Elantra or the Skoda Octavia and a premium SUV rivalling the likes of the Hyundai Tucson or the Jeep Compass. This might be the beginning of the return of the Grand Vitara, Suzuki’s revered SUV and a premium sedan akin to the Kizashi because only this size of cars will warrant a 170bhp 2.0-litre diesel in the current market scenario

Initially was wondering why this news was posted in this thread. However, noticed the Multijet 2.0 part later.

Interesting development indeed. Which vehicle would need it? The upcoming vehicles are SCross facelift, Ciaz facelift, Swift, Vitara etc. All of which would need the 1.6 at maximum, not the 2.0

Would be interesting if the Grand Vitara makes a comeback. The 2.4 petrol had it's share of fans, but the 2.0 Multijet can really bring it some numbers.

EDIT -

Or else the author of the article (a familiar name though :)) has confused this with the 2.0 Multijet orders from TATA. There were many confusions from this thread itself, because FIAT announced both the deals together.

Is Grand Vitara being sold in any market? I know that it is discontinued in the uk.

Maruti has plans to achieve 2 million sales by 2020. I think Vitara S and D-segment sedan are in the pipeline. My prediction is that they might bring in Innova competitor rather than Tucson competitor.

Maruti Suzuki's upcoming Vitara is likely to use FIAT engine (localized)

The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine produces a maximum power of 171 Bhp and peak torque of 350 Nm. Interestingly, both Maruti and Tata Motors have signed a contract with Fiat for the supply of the 2.0-litre Multijet engine. The same engine is expected to power the Maruti Vitara and Tata H5X in the future

If that happens it would be great to Scross owners. Scross would continue to sell while Vitara with 2.0L engine fight with Creta. If Maruti uses this in Vitara then Tata H5X will definitely be a Creta competitor.

The upcoming Suzuki ( Grand?) Vitara is likely to get the 2.0-litre diesel engine from FCA. To debut in 2020.

The 7-seater model will use the existing C-platform that underpins the global Vitara SUV and the India-spec Vitara Brezza. However, this platform is being modified to accommodate bigger engine and to create more space inside the cabin.

Maruti Suzuki plans to shut its diesel engine assembly plant in Gurgaon.

The Suzuki Motor Corp. unit might either convert the diesel engine line in its Gurgaon plant to produce petrol engines or add an assembly line for petrol engines at its plant in Manesar.

Maruti plans to stop using the 1.3-litre diesel engine for its cars, replacing it with a 1.5-litre diesel engine developed in-house by Suzuki
For bigger diesel engines Maruti Suzuki is likely to get those from FCA for products due in 2020.

Maruti Suzuki will resume getting engines from FIAT. Will re-introduce the 1.6L diesel engine in BS6 Compliance . Vehicles powered with this engine will likely be launched in late 2020.

Fiat's inability to sell good cars and Maruti's fear of engineering a good in house Diesel seems to be match made in heaven lol:

After all the pain of producing the sweet 1.5L Diesel, Maruti has decided to knock the doors of an old pal for BS6 engine. Hope Grand Vitara get the sweet 2.0L and not the small 1.6.

So then the tax rebates are gone then?

BS6 + greater than 1500cc engine aka diesel double whammy.

With Jeep sales going down and no new models in the pipeline, Fiat probably struck an irresistible deal to stay in our market, only time will tell if it is as good as the old 1.3DDiS.

If the deal wasn't a steal, then higher tax, plus all the BS6 related equipment could push the prices too high to make any sense over the petrol. Final price, compared with the 1.5 Petrol variants, would be an interesting thing to look forward to.

The Vitara will get the 1.6 along with the S Cross and XL6. Using the 2.0 will increase the price and push it beyond the range maruti would like to target for the Vitara.

Maybe the Toyota iteration might use bigger engines.

All this is fake news in my opinion. Maruti has no plans for diesel till 2021 at least as per my information.

Is it a joke?! Maruti develops a 1.5L so late knowing BS 6 is around the corner but not compatible ! And now going back to Fiat for an engine which is rather old and cant get any rebates due to the higher CC slab. Just doesnt add up!
