The fuel inlet is generally on the side opposite to the vehicle's exhaust pipe side, probably to avoid heat and sparks from the pipe.

even the optra and the aveo have it the on the right side.

but left is more convenient in india as we have rhd cars.!

Why so? By having it on the right you have the pump attendant, the fuel inlet and the fuel meter on the same side. Also helps you check if things are closed while you are driving.

Did not know that the Aveo and Optra have it on the right hand side too. Good. Some sense.
