Maruti Concept Future S compact SUV to debut at Auto Expo

Maruti Suzuki will showcase a compact SUV concept at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Future S is a sub-4 meter SUV that is likely to be positioned below the Vitara Brezza.

The official teaser image released by Maruti Suzuki reveals the Future S concept in side profile. The car has an upright stance and a gently sloping roofline. It features a wraparound front windshield, an almost upright A-pillar and a thick C-pillar. It appears to have slim, twin-pod headlights and LED tail lights. The rear end features a steeply raked windshield. It is also reported that this mini SUV will be about 200 mm shorter in length than the Brezza.

Maruti hasn't provided any details about the engines that could power the concept when it goes into production. However, media reports suggest that it will be based on the HEARTECT platform shared with the new Dzire and the upcoming Swift hatchback. It is likely to be offered with a hybrid powertrain with a 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine along with Maruti's upcoming 1.5-litre diesel unit that is currently under development. While the exact timelines for its launch are not known, the new compact SUV could be launched later this year or early 2019, according to a media report.

Looks promising! especially rear is quite F-Pacish!

One of the benefits of not tying your design team with a 'Design language' is that you see distinctly designed products which cater to the segment rather well; as compared to launching clones in different sizes.

And if with this they are taking on upcoming Santro from Hyundai, then Next-gen Santro is in for a tough competition.

What a cool front end! I'm totally digging the wraparound windscreen. Older cars, like the 1959 Edsel Corsair had it and in modern times, an auto rickshaw has it. It not only looks nice, but should improve visibility around the corners as well.

Although, I just hope that its not a tallboy design like the Ritz or the WagonR. The Brezza is a nice proportional design and I expect the Concept Future S to have nice proportions.

It does look cool. Will the Future S be designed in India like the Vitara Brezza? The design team did a great job with Brezza and might come with another great design.

It seems like Maruti Suzuki don't want to keep any stone unturned. This looks like an attempt to conquer the mini/compact SUV segment.

The mini/compact SUV segment has potential to make numbers. M&M failed to capture this segment with the KUV. This is a cool looking design for a mini/compact SUV. S-future (in future) along with Ignis can conquer this segment for Maruti Suzuki.

Not sure how it will look in actual avatar, but this picture says the car lacks symmetry in design - especially around the A-pillar. A more conventional A-pillar will help a lot, IMO.

Re: Maruti Concept Future S compact SUV to debut at Auto Expo

Zigwheels speculation on the Future-S

- A compact SUV - Micro 'SUV-ish' segment
- An SUV alternate to SWIFT - could overlap in price too.
- Not a KWID rival
- Launch in Mid 2019

I am not sure how these boxy cartoonish cars will work outside of Japanese markets. There have been vehicles like these selling in Japan without being sold in other parts of the world.
Maybe Suzuki might now be wanting to test them in other markets ?

Isn't that the Ignis?

. Ignis isn't SUV-ish, it is Quirky-ish. They want to replicate the success of Breeza in lower segments with this new design and I feel it would look like mini Breeza.

Keeping Maruti's success rate in mind, India should be one of the first markets for them to test new products. Maruti seem to be doing very little wrong.

Previously they have successfully launched 2 vehicles in the same segment and still sold decent numbers.

Re: Maruti Concept Future S compact SUV to debut at Auto Expo

Some more information on the Future-S,

- Future-S is essentially a cross-over ( between a hatchback and an SUV)

- Company will gauge the response of viewers at the Expo and decide on whether it should go for commercial production.

- Concept designed by Maruti Suzuki Engineers

- The A-pillar (the one to which the windshield is embedded) is the most upright amongst all Maruti Suzuki cars but on par with the XBee

- The Future-S will also feature the thickest C-Pillar yet seen on Maruti cars.

- Concept is that of high seating position very clear visibility of the road having and upright stance the body to make it look like SUV-ish hatch

- < 4 M in length
