New Maruti caught testing! Is this the next-gen Alto?

Source: http://www.financialexpress.com/auto...ealed/1059518/

Is it the new Wagon-R? Seems like it is different from the Japanese version seeing the B-pillar and front quarter glass (but for good). IMO, it seems like a size and segment lower than current Wagon-R. Notice the ultra-small bonnet!

Will it get that quirky rear?

It looks like the next gen. Alto. The spy pics are closer to the Japanese domestic version of Alto.

+1.

My guess is Alto as well. Looks half a size smaller than the WagonR too.

With the front quarter glass missing, a short rear, and flap-type door handles, I feel this isn't the upcoming new Wagon-R. Though Maruti brings its own styling to tone-down the quirkiness, I doubt this level of changes to Wagon-R.

The resemblance to the present gen Alto is visible from the side profile.

That short and stubby hood might be Maruti's attempt to SUVise the car.

I think there were a couple of rumors about next gen Alto being a sort of pseudo-SUV to take on the competition from Kwid.

This might be the same iteration with raised bonnet, short overhangs, and increased height.

The JDM Alto has an A Star ish rear door and glass area. The glass area on this one is totally different.

I think it's a new Alto design specific to India. It's definitely not the new Wagon R. It's too small for that. And it's got flap type door handles instead of the pull type on the new international Wagon R

Any chance this is the production version of the Concept S?

BTW are we sure this is a Maruti prototype?

Can the Maruti Suzuki experts pitch in?

The rear window line doesn't match with that of an Alto JDM. The one on Alto JDM is more like that of Ignis.

This looks more like an Indianised Alto with a change in rear window design. It's too small to be a WagonR.

re: New Maruti caught testing! Is this the next-gen Alto?

Since MS has plans for two WagonR models - 5 seater and 7 seater, this could be the smaller 5 seater model. They must be reducing the size of the current car slightly to make the new 5 seater and increasing it slightly to make a 7. Any more change and it would challenge the Ertiga (which is also planned to have 2 models).

Afaik the new Alto won’t be a tall boy design.

Whatever that thing is in those wraps, it sure looks hideous to me already, owing to its sorry proportions. Don't know what MS designers are smoking these days.

They just smoked out Dzire/S-Cross/Swift in the last 6-9 months with positive reactions from public and enthusiasts alike so please cut them some slack. This is heavily camouflaged to get into such conclusions. This might not be a production version also!

Re: New Maruti caught testing! Is this the next-gen Alto?

I still think it's the new WagonR modified for India - seeing the overall vehicle shape, wind shield slope and second row door design. But somehow, I believe this will do to WagonR what Estilo done to Zen - tarnish the image and ultimately end up in stop production. I'm ok to accept it if it is the new Celerio or Alto, because the current ones are eye-sores to me. No offense to anyone.

If it is really the new Wagon-R, expect a 7-seater as below: elongated, bigger second-row doors, and a lot smaller than Ertiga, and weird with that short bonnet and comparatively looong body.

Re: New Maruti caught testing! Is this the next-gen Alto?

I too think it is the next gen WagonR only.
The overall boxy shape, with that short but raised bonnet makes it look more like an upcoming WagonR itself.
Even if the next gen Alto may be a tall-boy, I doubt whether it would be this much box-shaped.
WagonRs can be boxy because people have already accepted it as boxy, but a boxy Alto means there would be mixed opinions.

Further, the test car has ORVMs with integrated indicators.
It is highly unlikely that next-gen Alto will get ORVM mounted indicators when the more expensive WagonR still doesn't have it.
So I don't think that it is an Alto upgrade.

As others have pointed out, may be this is the smaller 5-seater variant of the next gen WagonR.
But then which engine will they use for the bigger seven seater variant?

Same K10B engine for the 7 seater too means it is going to be a disaster.
That engine doesn't even pull neatly with four grown-up people onboard in the city with AC on.
I can only imagine what it will do with one more row of seat and 7 people onboard!

They should launch it with the K12 engine or otherwise it doesn't make any sense to call it a seven seater.

Here is latest scoop from Cartoq on refreshed Wagon R 2018 model for India

https://www.cartoq.com/all-new-marut...ficial-launch/

Current model that has been introduced in Japan does not resemble to this India specific model.

According to Cartoq, this model for India will be based on Heartect platform and expected to meet new safety regulation.
