The new Mauruti Suzuki Ciaz is set to launch in August this year, TOI has learnt from sources. The 2018 avatar of India’s largest carmaker’s sedan was widely expected to be unveiled at the Auto Expo last month. But, Maruti Suzuki decided to instead focus on the launch of its popular hatchback Swift at the biennial event.

Bookings for the new Ciaz are expected to begin in July. The Maruti Suzuki sedan, which is currently available with a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine option, will get an all-new engine in the latest version, sources said.

The diesel engine, which used to be sourced from Fiat, is now on its way out and for the first time, the company will be using an in-house Suzuki-developed, more powerful 1.5-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine will also be upgraded to 1.5-litre. A common complaint with the Ciaz had been that the engines in an otherwise nice car felt underpowered. Maruti Suzuki has clearly been paying heed to feedback and the decision to move to more powerful engines seems to be directly in consequence of that.

Received a message from my SA which stated as followed:

New Maruti Suzuki Ciaz 2018 Key Features

- New front grille
- Revised bumpers
- Smoked headlamps
- Sunroof
- New instrument cluster with two pods
- Larger MID screen
- New needles for tachometer and speedometer
- Cruise control
However, he didn't mention about the new engines. I did ask him about the same, will update as he replies.

I think maruti is smaart enough to realize that the game has switched to a level above with new Verna and new toyota. Historical diesel engine plus kitna deti hai alone may not favour them too

August could mean they can price based on Toyota. Wish this came by first half itself.

Also waiting for new ertiga, since they share engine

He replied back and confirmed that new engines are indeed coming. And for the first time Maruti will use 1.5L suzuki diesel engine instead of Fiat sourced one. The launch is in August and booking will start in July.

Rumour: Maruti Ciaz to be launched in August 2018

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the new Ciaz in August 2018. The bookings for the new model are expected to commence in July 2018.

Under the bonnet, the Ciaz will reportedly receive new 1.5-litre engines. There have been rumours of a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that will replace the current, Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre unit. Now, a recent media reports suggests that the 1.4-litre petrol engine will also be replaced with a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder unit. While the detailed specifications have not been revealed, the larger capacity engines are expected to produce more power than the outgoing engines.

Camouflaged test mules of the Ciaz facelift have been spotted in the recent past. The spy images indicate that the upcoming Ciaz could receive minor cosmetic updates.

The new Ciaz will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City and the upcoming Toyota Yaris.

If I'm not mistaken, both 1.5L Petrol and Diesel engines are completely new. Won't this create some sort of trust/reliability issues? Also, can we expect the best of engines from them? (since other players such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai have traditionally been known for their engines and continuous R&D).

Lastly, how feasible was it for a company to develop two new engines simultaneously?

Petrol engine is not all new. It is downsized M16. Diesel is all new engine. Maruti has been working on it since couple of years. Maruti sources are saying that the engine is impressive with very good drivability.

I have driven the new Verna diesel and although the engine is not all new and is rather a tweaked version of the older engine in the Verna, it is a hoot to drive and plus driveability in the City is fantastic! You can easily be in higher gears and yet not carry speed and the best part is that the engine is unbelievably refined and quiet. Easily the benchmark in its class.

Maruti will find it very hard to match this and rightfully so since it is their first attempt at a genuine Diesel engine, not counting the one in the Celerio!

For an organization like MSIL, developing two engines at the same time won't affect the focus given to either of them, so no need to worry about them biting off more than they can chew.

Moreover, given the sedan segment they're targeting these engines at (and the competition they're going up against), the performance and quality targets will be high indeed.

For any newly designed engine (or similar system like gearbox), there is always a chance that something slips through the cracks; that is the reason we see manufacturers having recalls.

For that matter, even for a tried and trusted engine, all you'd need is a bad batch of parts (e.g. ball bearings that crack in half the design life), to cause a problem.

That said, a naturally aspirated petrol engine is generally quite straightforward and simple, so there's not too much that can go wrong. At most, the tuning of the engine maps might require tweaking over time.

Diesels have a little more complexity due to the need to integrate a turbo (the turbo itself is a "readymade" part built by a specialist company like Honeywell, Garrett).

If you wish to be extra cautious (e.g. you're buying a car for your elderly parents, and want to ensure the car makes their life easier), you might want to hold off for a month or two. Being Marutis, they'll sell a lot, and will quickly uncover any problems/quirks that might be hiding in there. :)

But in general, there's nothing that would really alarm me if these vehicles come with a new engine, since technologically there's no big change.

That is factually incorrect. The M15 engine does service in China and for exports of Maruti like gasoline S-Cross. The engine for Ciaz is K15 series from the acclaimed K-Series line up. The M series is not really known for fuel efficiency as was the case in SX4. The K- Series on the other hand is all about reduction of losses and improving efficiency.

Does that mean this engine is all new? I couldn't see a K15 in any of their models, even in China!

I assume it is the M15 that is used in Ciaz exported to other markets.

Mod Note: New Maruti Ciaz to be launched in August 2018 - Posts moved to a new thread.

This is good news, and could very likely result in the 1.5 diesel engine gradually finding its way to the hatchbacks and compact SUVs. High time, I say. The 1.3 L DDIS has been around for a long long time and truth be told, has lost its sheen over the last few years when newer and very competent diesels have surfaced from various other manufacturers. It is time that Maruti used their diesel game and provided a engine with good power, drivability and torque.

Does anyone have any idea on the power and torque outputs on the 1.5 L diesel? Would be interesting to know how it compares, specs wise, to the current small diesels in the market.
