Volkswagen has introduced the 1.0-litre, petrol engine on the Ameo compact sedan. It replaces the old 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol unit. VW has also launched the limited edition Ameo Pace powered by the new 1.0-litre engine. It is priced at Rs. 6.10 lakh (ex-showroom). The Ameo Pace is based on the Comfortline trim. It gets additional features like cruise control, glossy black ORVM housing and boot spoiler as standard.
The 1.0-litre petrol engine was first
launched on the Polo in March 2018. The same engine will now power the Ameo. The new BS-VI compliant 999 cc, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine makes 75 BHP @ 6,200 rpm and 95 Nm of torque @ 3,000-4,000 rpm. If you compare it with the old 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine, the overall output is almost similar, while torque has reduced by 15 Nm. Like the Polo, the Ameo 1.0L will be available with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Meanwhile, VW will continue to offer the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine on the Ameo. This engine makes 109 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm @ 1,500-3,000 rpm and comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or an optional 7-speed DSG.

This change cannot bring in cheer among the buyers for sure. The engine looks under powered for pulling a one ton+ car.
They should have waited for market response of this engine on Polo before making across the board induction of new engine.
Maruti for that matter has done all experiments on Celerio and basis the success or failure, brought changes across segments, VW has offered nothing to the user by this engine.
Tiago / Tigor duo were missing competition because of their 3 pot motors and VW decided to fill in this void.
What is the need for cruise control on a 1.0L petrol variant? The only positive factor is its BS-VI compliance.
And they went ahead and called it the Pace variant! May be it is slow pace! They should have just discontinued the petrol and offered a diesel and a TSi petrol variant. They sell less than 1500 cars anyway.

@TusharK Old 1.2 MPI was 3 cylinder. Please correct it.

In earlier days, some truckers had the habit of placing a stone on the A Pedal on highways, to maintain speeds between 80-100 (depending on the gradient).
People driving this car with this anemic puny engine would have been forced to do the same thing, just to maintain proper speeds on highways.
Cruise control will be boon for their right legs! :uncontrol
The Ameo with the 1.5L TDi engine + DSG gearbox combo is a cracker but the petrol is just plain hopeless right from launch. VW messed up by launching the Ameo with a puny 1.2 MPI and now gone ahead to make it worse with the 1.0 engine.
I really wonder, what could be the compelling reason for VW to put 1.0 litre mill in perceived premium small cars - Polo or Ameo. We are guessing that the reason could be stringent emission norms to be applicable in near future, but don't know the exact reason. Supposing that happens to be true, does VW not have the required engineering prowess to meet that challenge?
But this offer will not help them. Instead of introducing this smaller engine, VW India could have discontinued the NA petrol option in this segment and promote Turbo petrol or diesel only
Whatever premium features a car may provide, it's mechanicals always get priority. And given the options, people prefer cars with better displacement at the same price bracket even if one overlooks the torque or power figures.
In a similar example, Tigor from Tata could not do well in sales because of its smaller engines, when as a car it was quite worthy of consideration. In the past, we have example of Maruti 1000 which was later replaced by Maruti Esteem 1.3, to get better success. Even small cars like Alto, Datsun or Kwid are offering higher capacity 1.0 L engine option to lure customers in addition to their 800 cc engines.

Reasoning in introducing the the 1.0L MPI engine is due to the upcoming emissions. They have a 1.0L TSI engine but compelling reasoning for not introducing that could be due to the pricing .
The Ameo was already not selling in good numbers as compared to its rivals and now VW has completely killed it with offering a 1.0l 3 cyl petrol.
Most people who are upgrading from a hatchback to a budget sedan, will now go for either the new dzire or the upcoming amaze.
Who would wanna buy a rough idling 1.0l 3cyl sedan?

And just imagine the load on the poor engine with 5 + luggage onboard! Stick to the left lane of the expressway, baby!

All said & done, it's remarkable that VW is able to sell 3,000 units / month of the Polo & its sedan derivatives. Such an old car fighting far newer competition.

Agreed. Even if your running is low, one must still pick the Ameo Diesel if it's the Ameo you are buying.
GEN Next Ameo Rendered, could be built on the MQB A0 modified platform, the car is likely to arrive in 2020/21.

Whats next for next years model VW? 800 cc? lol.
Jokes aside, most people who go to vw / skoda showrooms, are expecting decent performance at least, if not stonking. This will be a disappointment to most. I would consider an ameo only if it had a 1.2 tsi petrol. its unfortunate that the only ameo worth driving is a diesel and no petrol option
A close friend drives the first generation Polo 1.2 MPi and absolutely loves it! He has clocked around 75k kms on the vehicle and was just considering buying another Polo MPi or Ameo MPi from one of the old 1.2 stock. So, off we went to talk to the Volkswagen guys if they had any 2017 vehicles or a 2018 1.2 MPi available and the sales executive absolutely ate our head forcing us to Test drive the 1.0 MPi. Penning down our horror below:-
° The way, the sales executive went gaga over this engine was hilarious. He said the car has become way lighter than before and also make one bhp more. Guess what? That's the brilliant technology of Volkswagen engineering that they were successfully able to shed some weight make 'ONE' bhp more and well the decrease in torque doesn't matters as that's something needed on the highways. :uncontrol
° Start the engine and the first thing you'll realise is how noisy the engine is even now. The new motor is outright lethargic and doesn't has any grunt at all. The car pulls all the way to redline but throughout the rev band it feels like this car is struggling to extract power from the engine. Heck! A decade old Santro & 800 are way more peppier than this.
° Be it the low end or the mid range, both were flat. I don't know if we were the only one to feel it or not but the car doesn't picks up instantly when you press the throttle. It's like the engine takes its own sweet time and it was getting super irritated in traffic.
° There was a moment when my friend tried to floor it and well we decided to turn back and get to the showroom. If you buy a Polo MPi now, forget about overtaking. The Autocar review had Mentioned that it has a linear power delivery. I guess they just didn't wanted to disappoint the bosses at Volkswagen as anyone of us who drives a 1.0 MPi Polo will definitely call it horrendous.
The mood is absolutely spoilt today and I'm never touching a 1.0 MPi ever again. I didn't expected this from Volkswagen even in my dreams. The Polo is such a beautiful car and Volkswagen has royally ruined it in the Petrol disguise. :deadhorse
I would rather buy a Celerio top end and save a lot of money yet have a good driving experience.
Regarding my friend, he is retaining his old Polo Comfortline.
