Mod Note: Our Hector Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

MG Motor's first SUV for the Indian market has been named the Hector. According to the company, the name draws inspiration from the Royal Hector biplane used by the British in the 1930s.

The MG Hector shares its underpinnings with the Baojun 530 and the Wuling Almaz. Spy images indicate that the SUV has similar proportions to the Baojun 530. It has a hexagonal grille with the MG logo in the centre. The grille is flanked by slim LED DRLs, while the headlamps are placed lower down. The car features flared wheel arches, ORVMs with integrated turn signals, roof rails and wraparound tail lamps.

MG hasn't revealed technical details about the SUV. However, it is expected to come with a BS-VI compliant 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol engine and a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel unit. It is likely to get optional automatic transmission.

The SUV is expected to get safety features like ABS, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system and a 360-degree camera.

The MG Hector is likely to be launched by mid-2019 and is expected to rival the Jeep Compass.

Hector. Reminds me of the guy in the movie Troy.

With so many launches this year, it's going to be sort of a Trojan war to compete!

Ok Cool, atleast it has a meaning. It's not something absolutely abstract.

Really? MG couldn't come up with a better name than Hector? Suddenly, the RR Cullinan no longer seems an odd name.

To me, Hector sounds like an old, weary gentleman in some retirement home in Mexico (not influenced by Breaking Bad :D) Only if they could've swapped the H with a V (Vector), it would've been a much better choice IMHO!

The only thing Hector reminds me of is the Harrier. They're trying to project the Hector as a sibling from the same mother (different father of course) or something, to promote acceptance.

Achilles is very clear about which SUV he prefers:

What good is to just reveal the name at this point? Unless they have an official car reveal sometime in the next 30-60 days, just a name reveal does not make any sense. This is the new age of digital media, people will forget the name in a few days, and that too if its from a completely new brand like MG.

They should have launched the car and the name together. Whats the hurry with the name? They cannot carry the buzz of the product too long.

I feel that the Hector name will be quite popular among the public since it sounds very 'trendy' and 'tough'. Just like @rovingeye pointed out, it sounds similar to Harrier and feels sophisticated.

Although I also agree that they should have names it at it's reveal itself but this must be a PR exercise to stay in the limelight

Some interesting points to note, other than the name -

1. LED DRLs that act as sweeping indicators.
2. Anyone noticed that tacho? It's marked anti-clockwise! :D

3. That warning lamp on the console 0:16. Does it indicate the presence of ESP?
4. At 0:21 it shows them tracking the car on a tablet - probably hinting at connectivity solutions being there from launch.

5. At 0:16 - You also see TPMS warning lamp.
6. Huge panoramic sunroof. Full glass with front section that can be opened, probably.

Amazing observations. Had to see thrice to notice all of them. :thumbs up

When we can have (ex)Creta as a name whats bad with Hector.

In addition:
1. The ESP light as well as Passenger airbag light is ON
2. Flat bottom steering wheel
3. 7K redline
4. Extreme cold temp testing
5. The guy looks like holding Job card.. May be service center far off?

IMO, MG is following what Tata did with the Harrier. They want to keep the buzz on.

Does anybody know about the turbocharged petrol engine in the Hector? I want to know whether it is developed by MG or they will source from other OEM.

On a lighter note, MG has to keep NVH level low for Hector else people will call it Tractor.lol:

:

Theres the active buzz - pictures on the interior, official name announcement, MG Range on display
and there is the passive buzz - sighting of protoypes all over the country. It looks rather planned IMHO.

The Tribune (a local English daily) has a full page advert for MG on its front page.

MG is supposedly showcasing 4 of its models to public at Elante Mall in Chandigarh from tomorrow onwards till Sunday. I am thinking of going and checking out the display.

They do not have any concrete information to pass on, could it be the reason? Why can't they reveal more information?

Are they going to launch the Hector in mid of this year?

Thanks to Automobiles Encyclopedia for sending these images in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page!
