Our good old Chevy Optra was Sold as Suzuki Forenza in USA.

Pity that it cost almost 3 times as much as the Toyota

Cheers!
Must point out that these were repainted and retrimmed. The only reason for their existence was to bring down the CAFE rating

Mainly in the US when Chevrolet would not touch this, Daewoo had collapsed and Suzuki had not yet developed the Kizashi

Opels European distribution network was much superior to Suzukis.

I don't know if it counts as a part of this discussion, but I just wanted to share what I saw in 'Better Call Saul', the prequel spinoff to 'Breaking Bad'.

Jimmy McGill a.k.a. Saul Goodman (from Breaking Bad) drives a battered Suzuki Esteem which is basically the OG Baleno which was sold in India.

Re: Badge Engineering or Bodge Engineering - A Primer

Toyota knows just how much money they can make by selling luxury cars, and they don’t want to screw it up by peddling poorly rebadged boxes. As a result, the lexus of today are a lot different than the lexus of years past. They’re more luxurious. They’re more distinctive. They’re more appealing, and way more refined than their toyota counterparts.

Lexus has gone to great lengths to differentiate its vehicle offerings by giving them upscale cabins, a unique infotainment system, and, in some cases, more potent available powertrains. To call them a mere rebadge, would be shortsightedness.

From Seat to Skoda to VW to Audi - they have managed to create a good differentiator in the market and command a significant premium.

You have covered the points exceedingly well in your 6 point check-list, though to be fair IMO some points do carry a more weight - looks and distinct trims being key, along with incorporating respective manufacturer's traits.
.
Sorry for the late reply. What VW do is either make the car very different or lightly rebadge and restrict the market territory.

You are indeed correct, some points should carry more weight than others, however, it is best to consult with some others and arrive at this. I did not have the time although there are 100000+ experts here who could help!

That is much deeper than badge engineering. One comes as a convertible and the other as a coupe. The exterior panels are also quite different

It's also sold at the Chevrolet Esteem in South America. The Indian Esteem was sold as the Chevrolet Swift.

Re: Badge Engineering or Bodge Engineering - A Primer

The Fiat Sedici & Suzuki SX4 : Co developed by Fiat and Suzuki and designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign Giugiaro studio for the European market. The Mini Crossovers never made it to the Indian shores. What we got instead was the SX4 Sedan.

Internationally in 2013, the Second Generation of Mini Crossover was launched as Suzuki SX4 S-Cross. The second generation SX4 has not been marketed as a Fiat, and the SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz, while the Sedici was succeeded by Fiat 500X in 2014.

Re: Badge Engineering or Bodge Engineering - A Primer

Badge Engineering garners acceptance for the Toyota- Suzuki duo:

Feb-21 dispatches continues the success trend seen since the release of Glanza- Baleno.

Baleno+ Glanza = 20,070 + 2743

Brezza + Urban Cruiser = 11,585 +2549

38% of Toyota India's volumes in Feb'21 came from Maruti rebadged models!

Re: Badge Engineering or Bodge Engineering - A Primer

Beating all logic, the Suzuki- Toyota badge engineered products are huge success for the duo.

In March-21:

-Toyota India registered its highest-ever domestic sales in the month of March'21 since 2013

-Maruti sourced Urban Cruiser ranked second and is bringing significant volumes for TKM. The model sales grew 24% over Feb'21

-Maruti Rebadged models (Glanza & Urban Cruiser) total dispatches in March 2021 added up to 6,151 units and contributed to over 41% of TKM's volumes.

- Even with only petrol variants the Cars are the best sellers in their respective segments.

- Glanza + Baleno = 24,206 ( Segment leader)

- Vitara Brezza + Urban Cruiser =14,436 (Segment leader)
