Tata to set up 300 EV fast-charging points in FY2020

Tata Motors and Tata Power plan to set up 300 public fast-charging stations for EVs in 5 cities by the end of FY2020.

These fast-charging points will be installed in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Last week, the company inaugurated 7 charging points in Pune. 45 more charging points are said to come up in the other four cities in the next 2 months.

The chargers will be operated by Tata Power. The first 50 chargers will adhere to Bharat Standard (15 kW). The company also plans to set up 30-50 kW DC chargers based on CCS2 standards.

At present, Tata Power operates 42 charging points in Mumbai and has set up a total of 85 points in other cities, including Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi.

Earlier this month, Tata Motors had announced that it plans to introduce four electric cars in the next 18 months. These are likely to include electric versions of the Nexon and Altroz.

Tata is also reportedly working on a Tigor EV with longer range for private buyers. At present, the Tigor EV is only available for fleet operators. In its current configuration, it offers a maximum range of 142 km (MIDC cycle).

Re: Tata to set up 300 EV fast-charging points in FY2020

Had the misfortuna of going to the Tata power car charging station on Eastern epress highway Vikhroli. Even after calling repeatedly and being told that the charging station is working, once I reached there, surprise of surprises, they said the whole thing is under test and nothing is working.
Lovely folks.

For everyone who complains infrastructure isn't there, this should be a cue. There's isn't any drama around setting up a charging station. The infrastructure, that's the grid already exist and decent EVs can be charged at home. For the 1% time, the 300 km range is exceeded fast charging will pup like mushrooms everywhere. You'll see a lot of DC fast charging being installed this year.

Re: Tata to set up 300 EV fast-charging points in FY2020

Tata Power to set up 700 EV charging stations in India by December 2021, aims to expand its EV charging mission to high-traffic density National Highways and also popular tourist places like Mahabaleshwar, Mussoorie, Coorg & Dwarka.

Quote:
Sandeep Bangia, Head — EV, HA & ESCO Business, Tata Power, said, Highways are an important focus area for us as the main use of a public charging network is for inter-city travel. We are identifying specific high-traffic density highway locations along the key city pairs like Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Jaipur, Bangalore-Chennai, Hyderabad-Vijayawada and others to put up chargers.
Quote:
Similarly, we have identified tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Mahabaleshwar, Coorg, Dwarka and such locations where EV owners from a city would go for a driving excursion. We are putting up fast DC chargers at logical pit-stops along these highways where one may take a quick chai break while his/her car gets topped up.”

Re: Tata to set up 300 EV fast-charging points in FY2020

How will Tata (or any other company) properly dispose off the batteries they include in their vehicles, after let’s say someone decides to get a battery replacement?

Will we be looking at a lot of electric waste in the coming years?

Re: Tata to set up 300 EV fast-charging points in FY2020

Love Tata Power.
Please folks, put more DC Fast chargers which are faster than 25kW.
25kW is better than 7.2kW, but let us at least go to 75-100kW.

I cannot speak for Tata but in the past, the only two examples of long selling EV models are Nissan Leaf and Tesla model S.

Tesla batteries are very popular on second hand market. The batteries are never truly dead — they just reduce in capacity, so a 10y old battery may only store 90kWh as opposed to the 100kWh capacity it had on day 1.

YouTuber Zack (JerryRigEverything) is using Tesla batteries for his Hummer EV conversions. This is and will be a popular location for batteries. Sometimes users also “hack” their old EV batteries for home power storage.

Though there are many EVs on road, very few of the batteries in them are in landfills — media tries to portray pictures of mobiles and alkaline cell batteries lying in landfills — but these batteries have too little material worthy of scavenging — and are non standard in terms of voltage, capacity, and shape.

DIYers can’t just snap out batteries from an iPhone 4, Galaxy S3 and Bosch Hand-drill to cobble up into a pack for their project car.

EV batteries were made from beginning for this purpose of powering vehicles. They also typically go in form of modules. So let’s say 85kWh worth of battery modules aren’t enough for Zack, he can just buy more of the same modules from another Tesla owner willing to sell these (or wherever you buy them)
Not same for smaller batteries.

Truth is, much of EV batteries do end up either getting reused in DIY or get recycled, because the size is large, and the materials are more worthy. Tesla recovered materials worth 921GWh from recycled batteries when recycling 1000GWh of batteries. That’s possible because the packs come back to Tesla. (Search tesla impact report 2020)

The capacity of alkaline AAA cell is 0.8Wh. An iPhone 12 has 12Wh battery. A Nexon has equivalent of 2500 iPhone 12 batteries, or 37,750 AAA cells. If you have collection of so many phones or cells at once, it would be easier logistics to recycle. But it’s not

People throw away in trash and it’s not possible to scavenge each and every discarded cell. And without the scale — you can’t break-even profits as a recycling business. Only way is people responsibly leave them at centralised recycling centres and companies setting these up.
