What the numbers don't tell
Unlike the global norm, Indian vehicle manufacturers report only their wholesale figures, which represent dispatches from manufacturing plants to dealers. Retail sales figures reflect actual purchases by buyers and there can often be a mismatch between the two sets of numbers, with wholesale not being a true representation of consumer sentiment. Quote:

Now advocate release of retail figures
Tata Motors took the lead in this financial year to declare retail numbers quarterly to SIAM.
Mahindra & Mahindra chairman Anand Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bhargava have joined the ranks of auto industry captains now advocating the release of retail monthly sales numbers over wholesale data, a view that’s slowly veering towards a consensus in an otherwise fractious community.
This comes as the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the industry’s apex body, is yet to take a firm stand on this issue. Quote:
Analysts argue that the primary reason companies are now clamouring for putting out retail numbers is that, given the current auto industry slowdown, the actual sale of cars to customers at dealerships is a better yardstick of consumer sentiment.
