Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

Here is the Toyota RUMION, spotted by Prospecton Plant in Durban as rebadged Ertiga and now launched in S Africa:

Quote:
This badge was last used by Toyota in 2015 for its Corolla-based MPV that was built in Japan and sold to select global markets. It was also sold as the Scion xB in North America.

The new Toyota Rumoin looks to be an expansion of the brand’s partnership with Suzuki.

The S base model comes with 15-inch uncovered steel wheels and the mirrors are unpainted. Standard specification in the S is fairly basic and key features include manual air conditioning, electric windows, dual front airbags and ABS brakes.
Quote:
The 1.5 SX, priced from R273 500, adds a Double Din four-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity as well as aux and USB inputs. It also gains rear air conditioning, a 12V rear power socket, steering-mounted controls, remote central locking, rear window demister and park distance control. Visually, the SX is distinguished by plastic wheel covers and colour coded mirrors.

Topping the range is the 1.5 TX, priced from R301 600. Over and above all the stuff you get in the SX, the TX adds a touchscreen audio system with six speakers, reverse camera and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The range-topper also gains automatic air conditioning and an additional rear power socket. Aesthetic differentiation comes in the form of 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, chrome door handles and imitation wood interior trim.

1.5S manual - R245 600

1.5 SX manual - R273 500

1.5 SX automatic - R289 200

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

Toyota is in a serious copy paste mode, not only in India but overseas also. No new cars have been launched by them in recent times except rebadged Maruti's (glanza, urban cruiser and upcoming belta). Seems like they are making good profits by following this model so they don't want to apply brains and money in innovation and new product development. Profits on front seat, innovation in boot. Hoping to see Toyota Malto (rebadged alto) soon as this segment is still not copied by Toyota.

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

This has really become Maruti Suzuki Toyota Ltd. these days. So many Maruti's rebadges as Toyota's. Do they have different safety equipment to help pass the safety tests in other countries and as per Toyota's standards?

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

Welcome to the new normal. I'm sure Toyota is playing the clever game here with the rebadges covering up the entry - mid segment and having to only focus on the premium segment in terms of actual 'product' launches. Else Toyota would likely have to take Ford's route in the long run. I won't blame Toyota for this. This is what you get for those pointless automobile rules in the country.

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

We can feel a little relieved that SA prices are way over the top than ours. At current exchange,

1.5S manual - Rs. 12.36L

1.5 SX manual - Rs. 13.77L

1.5 SX automatic - Rs. 14.56L

1.5 TX manual - Rs. 15.18677L

1.5 TX automatic - Rs. 15.97L

In comparison, base is Rs. 8L and the top end Eritga is Rs. 10.70L ex here in MH. Hope these prices aren't carried here once it eventually lands here.

You never know, its the king-of-price-gouging, Toyota.

How I wish they launched the Avanza or Rush here with the Suzuki emblem instead.

It maybe surprising, but it is India that gets the cheapest Innova in the whole world. Even in the Innova's home market(Indonesia) or the almost nil taxed GCC markets, the Innova is priced higher. Nope, they aren't as well equipped as the Indian version either.

Also, most countires have small cars more expensive than us. We do have the cheapest cars in the word for sub 15 lakh rupees. But it is the 20 lakh+ segment that we are in a sorry state.

Yes, the Ertiga/Rumion maybe Rs.12-16 lakhs but South Africa gets the RAV4 for 25 lakhs, FJ cruiser for 38 lakhs, Prado at 50 lakhs and Landcruiser at 65 lakhs. Not sure of the taxes applied there, but that is how most international markets are. The new car starting prices are from 8-12 lakhs, while there is a plethora of options from 20-60 lakhs. We have a plethora of options below 20 lakhs, but 20 lakhs+ options are lesser in number and also price difference is in terms of 10s of lakhs.

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

I was expecting XL7 to launch under Toyota, but it seems adding Ertiga's flat seat to XL6 is too much work for Toyota, they would rather paste their logo on already existing Ertiga only.

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

As Ertiga owner, I would frankly recommend the Rumion over Ertiga. There is no problem with the car as such, its just that Maruti's service centers are there to loot aam junta with unnecessary add-ons and don't really have expertise in solving basic problems in one visit to the service center. I am guessing Toyota is much better in that aspect.

You must search for the thread in Teambhp itself where the Toyota part was costing much higher than the comparable one from Suzuki.

I am not sure about the add-ons part so can't comment on that. But yes, in general, Toyota service centers are better equipped with lesser crowd (Although that may change soon with these types of badge engineering/sticking )

Re: Maruti Ertiga-based Toyota MPV launch in 2021

Had this car come to India in this guise, i.e. as a Toyota, without the Ertiga ever existing, I am willing to bet my hat on the fact that many people, including reviewers, would laud the car for its robustness, build quality, solidity yada yada, just because of the badge on the front, and wholeheartedly recommend the car over any Suzuki or Hyundai alternatives. There is no objective metric by which to judge tenuous concepts like build quality, and most opinions on the subject are guided purely by psychological biases. There is no significant difference between a Toyota and Suzuki in the same budget segment. Both companies know this and are happy to rebadge away.

Maruti would probably want to launch it first through Nexa before Toyota can rebadge the XL7.

So Toyota started selling badges instead of making cars. What are they going to re-badge next? Celerio?

Why dos it say Toyota Motor Corporation instead of Toyota Kirloskar India Pvt Ltd?

Any change in strategy or is this how it has been always for trademarks?
