This they said in a recent edition?
I don't understand why Tata Motors want to partner up with a foreign player at least now when they have begun to make really good & competitive cars. If this joint venture thingy was in news a few years back, it would have been a welcome move. Tata motors was in shambles back then but now? Why?
They are turning around, market perception is changing for Tata cars and people are really warming up to them. I have been seeing a lot of Nexon(much more than ecosports and venues) and tiago on the road, and even Harrier sales have taken off.

What are they partnering for ? Is it for development efforts ? Its not like there is a hole somewhere in terms of segments that they want to fill.

Or is it eyeing on the future electric mobility aspect. This is the only thing that would make some sense. They can ramp up very quickly across segments if they do this.

Re: Rumour: Tata Motors (passenger cars) to get a new partner, probably Chinese

Tata Motors finances are in bad shape. Simple as that. It's not by choice.

Regarding potential partners, any equity investor would have to take the long term view and would have to absorb and accept Tata Motors current situation. On the positive side, Tata has a decent product and platform portfolio and the partnership would be in a ideal position to take on an industry that will eventually become the second largest automotive market in the decades to come. Therefore, any prospective partner would have to have deep pockets and patience to ride out the storm.

It could have made sense for PSA to get a foothold in the Indian market but that looks unlikely after the merger with FCA. Going forward, Chinese equity partners will remain a risky proposition due to the increasingly volatile political situation. Honda might look good on paper, but then again they are no Toyota or VW and there is also the issue of management style and control. Renault Nissan, Ford and Toyota can be safely ruled out for various reasons. VW have done their due diligence and it would take a brave board to pump billions into a faltering Tata Motors. Tough times and hard decisions ahead for the big T.

Unless others, I see Subaru as ideal partner for Tata Motors with both have SUV DNA but then it's just a dream.

Most probably it will be Chinese pumping in money which I don't mind if it helps Tata Motors becomes Indian Tesla.

Tough times for Tata. I don't think it would be easy to find a partner for Tata. Had they included JLR, things would have been different. But they had some kind of agreement with Chery but was backed off due to various reasons. Hope everything resolves for Tata and they raise higher.

If TATA does go ahead with partnerships from the Mainland, they should seriously favor Geely. After the acquisition of Volvo, the brand has seen steady growth I think.

For future-proofing their line-up of EVs, this would be the perfect fit, especially with the Polestar subdivision.

Re: Rumour: Tata Motors (passenger cars) to get a new partner, probably Chinese

As far as I know, Chery is a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer. Being a defense vehicle supplier to the Indian Army, Tata's partnership with a Chinese state-owned company is B.A.D .

[Rant Incoming]For me, actions always speak louder than words. I believe that people should show support to indigenous companies that are producing quality products. Most people show verbal support in social media and when the time comes to show the real support they go ahead and buy from non indigenous companies . If we had supported Tata Motors by buying their products, this situation might have been avoided.

As a Tata - Mahindra fanboy, I would never endorse this partnership. The appeal and pride in buying from an indigenous car manufacturer which is producing excellent and safe cars like Tiago, Altroz, Nexon, Harrier, et. al. is very strong for me. Now, if the partnership happens to materialize, it would rob away this feeling and many might refrain from buying a Tata car and opt for Mahindra instead. I hope this rumour stays a rumour.

If Tata sells out to a Chinese firm I am going to go the Harrier owner's group on FB and laugh my guts out. Harrier owner's (outside of Team Bhp) are a lot like Tesla fanboys, extremely toxic. All they do is to rant about how everyone else who is buying a Hector, XUV 500, Compass, Seltos, Creta are not "sons of the soil" etc.

"14 ESP Modes", "Land Rover DNA" but cannot outsell a decade old XUV 500 in the middle of the worst downturn ever. They are better off selling the company.

Geely/Volvo/Polestar is the best choice, I agree with @Ashutosh. With some good marketing, they can even sell the Nexon EV in Europe.

What's worse is the youtube comment section, 99% of them probably don't even own an Alto 800, let alone Harrier or Hexa. They just open any Comparison video and comment something silly.

Me on the other hand, had to deal with this company for one and half years and sold my car off because of their attitude. Car was not bad though.

I still wish for them to transform and succeed. Safety does matter, but not at the cost of everything else.

Re: Rumour: Tata Motors (passenger cars) to get a new partner, probably Chinese

The question I am asking these people is why? If its just to raise money, I am sure that there are better ways.

Very few partnerships have worked out in India. Ford Mahindra for the Escort; Tata Benz for cars (though trucks was immensely successful); Mahindra Renault- for Logan. Not every relationship turn out like Maruti Suzuki. TML can well get the tech transfer from JLR which (in harrier) is taking a better shape. JVs come with lots of assumptions which in the current uncertain environment may not work out in a win-win scenario.

TML/JLR should tie up with likes of Tesla who are building the future to get them to India (which was true in trucks in the age prevailing then) and not someone who is building on the status quo.

Re: Rumour: Tata Motors (passenger cars) to get a new partner, probably Chinese

Sorry to say this but it was the Ratan's miscalculation which lead to this situation. He was instrumental in opening PCV division and his dreams of a 1L car was just a bad business decision. Equally bad was their decision to take over the JLR with unfavorable terms which is now loosing money. He did the same with Tata Steel's buy out of Corus. They also were very slow in entering high growth areas like telephony and internet tech. This coupled with the mysterious "Tata culture" did not go well with independent observers. Talk in those days was that Ratan's obsession with taking TATA global was not going to end up well for the conglomerate. Having survived a take over scare ( a la Cyrus mistry affair) and with group now under a relatively new and stable leadership ( N Chandrashekaran ) , some course correction like this just had to happen.

The Chinese have bag loads of cash and ambition to buy out the world. Tata must be shrewd enough to not sell majority stake. This would appease the New delhi hawks who can play spoil sport in such high stakes board room dramas.
