That is not how viruses work. They are already non living beings, they only activate once inside a host(living beings). They are not even a complete cell, just a mRNA, protected by a layer of protein called capsid. They ain't gonna be destroyed(how do you kill something that isn't living?) in summer heat or winter cold. Remember MERS( Middle East Respiratory Syndrome)? It was in Saudi Arabia, already a hot place. It was also a coronavirus and didn't end because of heat. All they do is become inactive if the environment becomes hostile. They don't need food or water. Sterilisation works because the temperature is too high but vehicles can not be sterilised everytime.

People taking test drive should preferably wear disposable gloves, caps and mask. It would also be advisable to wear washable shoes or disposable shoe covers and clothes should be washed at once after reaching home.

Re: Precautions while taking test-drives or getting cars serviced post the lockdown?

Looking at the current scenario, it looks highly doubtful that the lockdown would ease up. There are way too many cases for that. And even post lockdown, one must be careful. Few points that could help are

1. For virus, the entry point in body is either through nose or mouth(nasal cavity). No A/c, Windows rolled down and no touching of face might do the trick.

2. Having an sanitisation room or a tunnel from where one would pass before and after each test drive might suffice. It would be a cost effective as well as a fast solution.

For all who state that car needs to be sanitized should consider that sanitizers used are alcohol based and easily combustible. If anybody is planning to Spray the sanitizer in the car, steering and around the the ignition, and then start the car it has all the ingredients of a bomb going off.
Do consider this before liberally spraying sanitizer inside the car.

I agree. If this too doesn't work, then might as well surrender to nature's will, let whatever happens happen! There's only so much one can do.

Re: Precautions while taking test-drives or getting cars serviced post the lockdown?

On yesterday, a friend of mine at our apartment where we stay had requested for a test drive of Maruti XL6 Automatic.

The vehicle arrived at the promised time while I was pleasantly surprised to witness the precautions in place by the dealership (Nexa, Yelahanka).

The sales representative wore mask and gloves, also ensured to sanitize our hands before we entered their vehicle. We were provided a pair of disposable latex gloves too:

The interiors were wrapped with polythene sheets like this, including the gear lever:

A rare occasion where I got to sit behind and allow my friend to take a long TD and this is how the cabin looked with sanitization in place:

The steering wheel cover is only intended for the limited purpose of moving the car from the ASS parking lot to the ASS service area.

The cover has a tendency to move around the steering wheel so when you turn the steering only the cover moves with the steering continuing to point straight ahead - this can be extremely hazardous for test drives especially as it would be a car that one is not familiar with.

This may not happen all the time as a result it can catch you out when it does.

The hazard increase during fast drives, lane changes and long drives.

With the latex gloves, this wasn't an issue. I took the wheel on return and drove about 8Kms on a dual carriageway that involved typical highway speeds and lane changes

May be an issue when driven with bare (and sweaty) hands but generally, from my own experience of driving and being cautious even on a normal day, I found this arrangement absolutely acceptable.

Also, when you actually hold the steering with the gloves on hands, the rubber string of the polythene wraparound ensured that the wrap itself didn't move over the wheel.
