Default July 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

The Altroz sales are finally on the right track!! Kudos to Tata for that. Ford Endeavour and Fortuner are separated by only about 200 units which used to be double of the Endeavour sales before! But the Aspire and Figo sales are very depressing indeed. At this pace they will be taken down within another year or two for sure.

Creta + Seltos = 19820 Hyundai got to be the happiest manufacturer right now.
City and verna are both disappoinment. I expected at least one of them to cross at least 2000. But GTO says creta has better highway dynamics than city, so I think these are justified. Why go for a low slung car if the driving experience isnt better?

Toyota had to shut down their factory 2 times due to covid infections within the factory and lockdown restrictions in Bangalore.

I suppose the Karoq figures are missing from the Skoda figures, considering T-Roc numbers are considered for VW and Karoq started getting delivered before Troc.

Thanks Aditya for the analysis:

The auto Industry seem to be getting back on track.

With the Pandemic looming still at large there seem to be a dynamic shift in buying preferences. The entry level segments seems to be in demand across manufacturers.
The Top 10 Selling Cars of July 2020 contributed to over 52% cars sold in India.

Maruti Suzuki:
Bags 7 out of the top 10 most sold cars in July.
- Maruti’s Alto became the best seller for both OEM and the Nation for July 2020. It showed strong YoY & MoM growth and signifies how the first time car buyers are increasing during this pandemic.
-Wagon-R was the second bestselling car in Maruti’s portfolio for July 2020. There is a spike seen in the sales of entry level cars and Alto/Wagon-R sales are a testimony for it.
-Baleno is still going strong and registered a mammoth 169% MoM growth in July 2020.
-Dzire and Vitara volumes has dropped significantly – Could it be the missing diesel variant?
- S Cross (P) dispatches begin to dealers.

Hyundai:
- Shows a negative growth and a drop in market share.
- Has 2 of its cars in the top 10
- Creta was Hyundai’s best selling model and India’s 4th best seller for July 2020. Outsells its counterpart Kia Seltos again.
- Venue ranked third for the OEM and around 6,734 units, but falls behind Maruti’s Vitara.

Tata Motors:
-Registered a YoY growth of 43% & MoM growth of 31%, and an increase in market share.
-Now is consistently the 3rd largest selling in the Auto segment
-Altroz seems to have slowly picked pace, though is considerably behind the top 2.

Mahindra:
-Takes a hit in sales as a consequence of the Pandemic/ Fuel prices/unfavorable diesel portfolio.
-Bolero is still Mahindra’s best selling car and sold well in July’20 basis strong rural demand. It growth a healthy 32% MoM.
-Marazzo sells just 20, TUV and Alturas are not yet BS6 ready

Here is how the segment fared in July:

- Mid SUV and the Entry Level and MUV are in demand

Logically, it should be Karoq. But the name we are getting in the list from Auto Punditz is still Kodiaq.

Jazz has zero dispatches since February, what's going on? It's still a capable car.

Pardon me for sounding a little pessimistic but considering the state of economy I don't think the numbers sold in the month of Jul are sustainable. Maybe Oct/Nov may see some spike but overall its going to be a very depressed market.

More than 50% of cars sold are in C2 and B2 bracket. This is the average salaried/MSME business class in our country, they normally have their head over their hearts even if in the last few years little exuberance got better of them, corona is diving each one of us in the covers.

Upgrading from C2 and B2 levels doesn't hold much charm as these are already aspirational models of their basic classes of A, B1 and C1. IMHO the spectacular growth of past was led by A, B1 and C1 segments supported by B2 and C2. Sale in basic segments of A, B1 and C1 indicate economic upliftment of the masses, B2 and C2 is status quo, indicating little further movement.
