Maruti trademarks the names Espaco, Libertas and Solido

Trademarks of upcoming cars from Maruti Suzuki have been leaked and the names that the top auto firm has applied for are – Espaco, Libertas and Solido.

To believe these trademarks will be used for the next generation Alto, Celerio and Wagon R or models related to them such as their electric only alternative.

The Solido might be an electric or a premium version of the Wagon R.

Solido.... Espaco.....

Seems Maruti has picked up some marketing people let go by Mahindra. This fascination with names ending with O is ridiculous.

And then, a dabba Maruti being called Solido?

Libertas- Roman goddess for liberty. (SUVish name??)

Espaco- Portugese for space (Probably for some 7 seater!)

Solido- Italian for solid (Will be waiting for the NCAP scores for this one )

Weird names certainly.

Espaco or Escapo?

Nevertheless a few more models in the lineup, sales increase Maruti is happy and shareholders happy.

I guess these names are for an SUV(Jimny), 7 seater based on the WagonR, and an EV with a solid state battery?

ESPACO, LIBERTAS and SOLIDO - These sound more like the name of a 100CC scooter

Really looking forward to the sheet metal thickness of SOLIDO!!

re: Maruti trademarks the names Espaco, Libertas and Solido

My guess is

Solido - Solio (WagonR 7 seater)

Libertas - XL5

ESpaco or E-Spaco or E-Scapo - Futuro-E production variant

None of the other Maruti products is pipeline seems to have a name plate that looks worth retiring so I guess the above three new products will adorn these names.

Seems like someone who just finished watching few Spanish serieses was in charge of naming these new models.

Possibly a brand name for the WagonR EV?

Haha! Not really though. This is typical Suzuki nomenclature to derive names from regional languages. Ignis for example, means 'fire' in Latin, Alto is 'High' in Japanese and Baleno is Italian for 'Flash' just to name a few!

A couple of suggestion from my side

My suggestions

1. Sasto-che-yo : for a cheap/budget vehicle.
2. Dabbasiyo : any of the cheaply built car from the stable.

Publishing of these in the trade marks journal doesn’t mean that they’ll actually be used on cars. It’s very common for companies who use multiple sub-brands to file for registration of trade marks which they think are unique, with possibility of using them in future. Once they secure registration they get exclusivity to the trade mark. But at later point in time they may not actually put the trade mark to use and may even abandon them.

Great post & true. But equally, no car company will use a name without trademarking it first. So there is a good chance that Maruti will indeed be using these names. I will put the odds at 50 : 50.

Totally agree GTO. No big company would want to get into a situation of being accused of using a name which is already trademarked by some unknown entity. The 50:50 odds are correct. Also most of the times when these names are conceived, they don’t do it with a specific car in mind. They come up with a name which they think will work for their cars so they have a stock of trademarked names to choose from as and when needed.

Going on a tangent, but can these be probable names for their commercial vehicle range?
