Not at all surprised. I know a quite a few people (mostly business guys- dry fruit trader, movie producer, stone crushing/mining company owner) who adhere to numerology very strictly. Even phone numbers are chosen based on numerology.
Some guys go an extra mile and stick to specific colors of dress they wear. When I ask them, why do they spend time, effort and money to do all these? Each one of them have replied saying it's an investment. The returns from these investments are multi-fold.

I'm not going to be judgemental :-)

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

Thank God he's not associated with any IPL team and its bidding process. This dude would've shelled out money on players based on their jersey numbers! The '7' craze would've gotten him Dhoni, but you get the point!

This is exactly what I meant referring to the aesthetics part. We may have special numbers of our choice but the manner it which they ultimately get displayed on the plates is what attracts attention and liable for penalties and not the allocated number itself.

I was referring to the 007 plate with the gun which of course is not the way our learned cops or RTOs will like.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

What are the tax implications here?

* I have come to know that most high end cars plying on our Indian roads are registered as Company vehicle ( to save tax )
* Now if one spends such exorbitant money on fancy number , what are the implications? Do they show this as expense too? (How do they pay to RTO such huge some? It has to be wire transfer if I am not wrong)
* And If it is a public listed company , will this be considered as Money laundering?

My apologies if the questions are vague , just trying to understand more on how this works for such huge sums of money.

Fortuner with a 007 number plate makes me think of the Rock (Dwayne Johnson) as James Bond.
Doesn't quite match.

To each their own, but spending 34 lakh for a number plate on a car worth 39.5 Lakh?

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

The vanity number can be retained on new vehicle and old vehicle can get new registration number.

Chandigarh has craze for such numbers.
Most of them are transferred to multiple vehicles.

One of the reason for craze is government or
bureaucrats cars always had special numbers which were unavailable to public.

At least in Chandigarh, Fortuner with 0001 grabs as much attention as Land Rover.

Just like car, this thing gets into news and several people like us read, comment or share. Guess what, this is how the money spent has generated value!

Personally,
I do agree amount spent on fancy number can translate to better products and services.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

Please correct me if am wrong, after paying so much he still can't legally keep a number plate reading '007' or '7'. It should only be 0007.

My cousin was once fined for writing only 34 instead of 0034.

By the way I keep my number is the plate as 0001 from the time I bought the car.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

Well this is crazy amount of money for a choice number BUT I am sure everyone would be shocked if they follow the costs of choice number in Dubai! It will blow your mind. People paying in crores is a very nominal thing for 2 digits or 3 digits. On the flipside it is also considered as an investment there since they allow people to retain the number regardless of the car.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

After looking at this thread and seeing all the posts the owner would think as if he committed a crime by paying so high for the number.

And for his next purchase maybe he would go with a model of the car with a 7 like a 7 series or X7 maybe rather than the registration number 0007 for a car worth almost equivalent to the bid price.

And then there are poor people like me! I had a choice, so I thought why not 007, but then I obviously couldn't afford it, so I took 6007 and told to myself, its actually better because its supposed to be MI6 007 rather than a 0007.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

This is an extreme example of how much a person can pay for useless stuff. My family is guilty of paying extra for the desired number 9000. Even I am planning to get a fancy number plate here in USA soon.

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

Well, in a free society every individual has full right to spend the legally earned money on legal activities.

VIP or special numbers for vehicles are akin to celebrities flaunting dresses or bags worth lakhs. Media goes ga-ga over these celebrities and proudly highlights the stuff.

I would be more interested in the sources of income of such people and how much tax they pay .

Re: Fortuner owner pays Rs 34 lakh for 007 number

To each his own I say. If he had a budget of 70 lacs it was his decision to buy a 35 lac SUV and blow 35 lacs on the number plate. In the end its his money and his decision.

Similarly someone may have a 10 lac budget and spluge 5 lacs for the vehicle and 5 for the number or give 2 hoots about the number and spend entirely on the vehicle.

Let me introduce another scenario - I personally know a few friends who have spent over 5 lacs on AV equipment on brand new cars. But that brings a smile to their face.

So like I said earlier - To each his own.

These numbers come under special category, not available readily. 1, digit, 2 digit and 3 digit numbers are valid, but, if one gets a no of lets say 0001, it is not same as 1, 01 or 001
