May not be the conventional choice, but I'd choose a Maserati any day. I understand that the reliability isn't great and that they're horrendous to live with over a long period but the looks, performance and the road presence of the Italian beauty is unmatched in my opinion.

With my heart - Maserati!

As a petrol head, engine forms the soul of the car. Nothing beats the Maserati when it comes to exquisite looks and heart-stopping sound of the engine.

With my brain - Lexus!

Refined, looks cool (in my opinion) and luxurious in a Japanese way. Also did I mention it is astonishingly reliable?

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Great thread!

Options I voted for:
  • Mini: Always loved those little numbers. Even the entry level Mini One is such a joy to drive.
  • Tesla: It maybe minimalistic but drove the Model 3 around end 2019 in California and just loved it. If I am living in the US, this definitely would be in my garage.
  • Porsche: I would like to own a Macan one day. No other Crossover have impressed me so much!
  • Volvo: Really liked the way Volvo has evolved from the boring bread box days. The designs are safe and pleasant, and without second thoughts I would pick an XC40 over the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA.
  • Luxury Cars from mainstream brands: Would strongly consider a Superb over the more illustrious sibling Audi A4.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Range Rover Evoque is a car I want to buy, it's not too big for the city, stylish, rugged, and powerful enough. But will I buy it? Nope, after reading/hearing the scary stories about the reliability of Ranger Rover cars, I wouldn't consider even a pre-owned Range Rover.

Porsche Cayenne would be my choice if I ever manage to save 1.5 cores. I love this car due to its excellent handling/performance combined with the practicality of an SUV in India. Macan Turbo will be the choice if the budget is closer to 1 crore. Have a crush on Macan Turbo since I saw it first in my previous office's parking area ( the car was owned by my boss ).

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Voted for the Lexus

For me,
Mini: Is a one car company. It is supposed to be that. The countryman and the Clubman are not exactly Minis

Jaguar: This would remind me of a British Marquee brand which can only be admired, not Owned. They are mostly Collector cars, too expensive a step up.

Volvo: Their designs are too Industrial, for my liking

LandRover/ RnageRover: They are the SUV builders, arent they?

Porsche: One for the racetrack.

I have been in the Lexus, albeit on the passenger seat, and fell in love with the hatchback, possibly one generation older to the current one.
The design inside out was stunning. The material finish, Snug fit on the seat, all of it gave me the impression of the Car I wanted to drive, badly.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

For me it would be: Lexus, Tesla, Volvo or Toyota (i can only think of Camry here, no other model I would pick).

Not a single other brand I would touch in that list although I am constantly drawn to Land Rover in particular, but their rep for lack of reliability is just way too overarching.

But this is theory.

If I am spending super big bucks on a Tesla, I will need to be completely sure on EV being usable in India. I am assuming pricing will be palatable and not atrocious.

For Lexus, the only car I can imagine buying is the ES 300 and at this stage the Camry is more than enough for me as a cheaper Lexus. Secondly, I would only consider a Lexus if the pricing was a lot more realistic. At current pricing its still not a slam dunk.

As enticing the concept of a Volvo remains, I would need to be confident of reliability, cost of service and resale value. For any Volvo I wish to buy if I can get an equivalent BMW or Mercedes it would still draw me more on the above 3 fronts.

My vote goes for VOLVO & Land Rover / Range Rover!

So that Volvo can act as a backup car (comparatively reliable) whenever the Rover goes kaput.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Voted the Volvo!
Was my first experience of a luxury car with the V40 T4, we loved the Volvo so much but Had a horror story with the then new XC60 that we bought and returned with the erstwhile dealer Artemis motors here in Chennai after which we picked up a Q5 TFSI and a Lexus NX300h.

Lexus is boring but reliable as a tank. Q5 is great fun to drive given the fact that it's a petrol.

Would not mind to look at a V60 (T6/T8)if it comes or the XC60 petrol variant of it comes within the next 2-3 years given the fact that there is a new dealer here in Chennai.

Voted for Lexus
I like the look of Lexus cars and would buy one if I had the money. I've read the story of how Lexus was born in the 80s and frankly came away full of respect for the brand. I'd buy one to see what life is like with a Lexus. Plus, my driving style is more that of a cruiser, so wouldn't mind the supposedly boring driving dynamics of a Lexus.

You know, with Jags, you could just "borrow" one and then forget to return it until something goes wrong with it.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

I can't vote (yet?). I currently own a Kia Stinger which is very enjoyable car and I would prefer to stick to similar cars as daily driver, due to reliability and cost effectiveness.

If those were not the factor, porsche for sure.

I do like different cars for different reasons, I am liking new 2021 Kia Sedona/Carnival. I am fan of legendary toyota land cruiser and I am excited to see what Lexus does with Yamaha motors in electric car segment.

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

Personally have experienced only a couple of luxury cars in India, rest of my experience is from the GCC markets.

Still given that I have the cash to buy a luxury car, still has the middle class mindset and not looking at the FTD factor.

1. Luxury cars from mainstream brands.

No brainer choice. My first choice would be the Camry, weird front grille design notwithstanding. There is a certain allure to a luxury car with a mainstream badge, though I am at a minority and it shows how those kind of cars don't sell in India. Heck, they are being wiped out even globally. Would buy the overpriced Landcruiser or Vellfire anyday over ze Germans.

2. Lexus

Pretty hard choice. Especially with their India line-up and the CBU pricing. Add to that their hybrid only approach for India means we lose something like the THUNDEROUS V8 in the LC500 and get a V6 hybrid instead. Still looks S-E-X-Y, but lost the hot voice.

Wait, we are talking about luxury cars. Not FTD ones.
I look at the 3er and C class with aspiration, but when the time comes I may chicken out and buy either a mainstream luxury model or a Lexus. (Sigh) Wish the Lexus IS was launched here.
For 1 crore, would buy the Vellfire straight away, only cause the Landcruiser is no longer on sale.
As for character. Guess the Grand Cherokee has it in bucketloads.

Volvo - Would love to buy a used S80 V8 just for that beautiful Yamaha tuned motor. Present designs are sexy, but nope.

JLR - Classy cars that I like to admire...from afar...

Porsche - As a luxury car purchase. Nah. But definitely Yes for a weekend FTD car. Either the baby Porsches or the 911 itself.

Mini - As a a daily driver. Cool FTD car. But I can't equate price or brand value with luxury.

Tesla - Yabidy dabidy. Haven't seen one, or driven one. So not a convert yet. Ferocious acceleration aside, those interiors are just cold and soulless. Minimalism my...

Ofcourse. All these are with my current mindset. Maybe if there is some undreamt of revenue or income flow. Maybe would embrace the 'life is too short to drive boring cars' or burn cash mode ON

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

I have never been a huge fan of the big 3 Germans. In particular I am not keen on BMW. I have had a few BMWs, Mercedes and Audi’s as company tin over the years. In those days I used to drive upward of 60.000km a year. And of course, any of these are extremely comfortable and safe cars.

When all is said and done, out of these three I tend to prefer the Audi’s, simply because I find them a bit more understated and I like that.

In general I don’t have a particular preference for any manufacturer. My attraction tends to be a certain model, not necessarily the whole range of models on offer.

I always like(d) the Jaguar F type. Gorgeous car, but in all honesty, with my 1.93m it is just too cramped. I also enjoyed the XF, again understated but a real nice car.

My biggest problem with Jaguar is that they have done away with their big engines all together. So you get some puny 2.0L petrol engine that cranks out a billion HPs. So far now, I stick with my 18 year old XJR-X308 with its proper 4.0l, Supercharged V8.

I have been looking at Range Rover Sport as well, the one with the hybrid drive train. I was not that overly impressed with the ride and I don’t think the infotainment system was any good at all.

Next om my list: Porsche!

I am not a Porsche guy at all. I admire their engineering, but somehow Porsche ownership has never appealed to me. However, with the latest Panamera 4 E-Hybrid that could change! I spend several hours at the Porsche dealership last year. I really like this car, if anything, because many people don’t like it at all.

But I do think it is fabulous. I like the way it looks, which is unusual at least. My wife could not tell a Mercedes from an Audi, but this one she does recognise when we are on the road.

The technology embedded in this car is just phenomenal! And it is one of the few cars that will accommodate both my 1.93 as well as my wife’s 1,63 in just a splendid way. Those seats are just so incredible comfortable and you can adjust them to fit and support any size or shape body.

The attention to detail in how this car has been designed and produced is just mind boggling!

The one small snag is it’s price tag. By the time I am done speccing this car we are talking about a price of well over Euro 220.000,--. That is the sort of money that will still buy you a small house, or a mid sized apartment, over here.

So, I have come up with a cunning plan: I have started buying extra tickets in our state lottery!

Re: Outside of the big 3 Germans, which luxury car brands would you consider & why?

The top three luxury brands I would consider are

1. Porsche
2. Porsche and
3. Porsche.

I am absolutely in love with both Cayanne and Taycan. This is of course assuming money is not a constraint. Otherwise even if I can afford a superb/camry, I'll consider myself very fortunate.
