Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

I'm just more worried about Replacement cost. The side view mirror is one of the most accident prone parts of our cars in India (maybe not in other countries with properly designed and spaced road with single direction traffic). In a country like India where vehicles move in directions so random and with literally millimetres of gap I cannot imagine how tense I would be driving a car with Digital mirrors.

Voted yes!

i believe that we need to embrace technology and move on with the times. I don't think i can today drive without the reverse camera and the 360 degree sensors.
Flipside would be the failure of the cameras/screens but am willing to look ahead as failure rates of screens have come down significantly

I don't know. Thought of many screens throwing light into the eyes itself is a pain.

Voted other. I don't know yet, as I have not driven enough variations of cars with digital mirrors. Just like rear view cameras, some OEMs make it pretty good and usable and some others just a namesake rear camera, which is not usable at all.

I am still not used to the reverse camera. The Polo doesn't have one. The ciaz has one. But my intuition is to turn back/depend on the sound beeps and not so much on the display.

I Like Honda's implementation. IMO it should be Mirror + Camera with an option to view any or all the feeds on the car infotainment screen.
When Blind Spot is detected, the camera feed should be automatically shown on the infotainment screen.

Voted No mainly because of big replacement cost.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

The reason of placement of wing mirrors today is for direct line of sight for the driver. Cameras can be mounted anywhere as long as they capture the desired angle. It will take a while getting used to but for new drivers, there will be no adaptation.

Personally, cameras can be integrated with AI to provide better safety aspects and potential to integrate with storage. How that image will be played inside the cabin remains to be seen.

Display on mirror is instant(speed of light), but I reckon the camera display might have a lag of a few microseconds or quarter of a second. Though not much, but could be a concern when you have to make split second decision on road.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Rear view camera as a digital screen is a terrible terrible idea. While driving you eyes are focussed at infinity i.e. roughly looking at object more than 5 meters away and when you looking at OVRM, you still looking at distant objects. But when you are looking at a screen, its basically less than half a meter away so you eyes have to constantly change focus when you look ahead or at the rear view mirror and its not only exhausting, its also risky because there is also a brief moment when your eyes are refocusing.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted No

Did drive a 2012 Accord with these tech for some time in the US. Initially though, this seemed like a great addition and good to show off to friends that have expensive cars without digital mirrors. Even though the Accord has normal OVRMs along with these, the digital camera technology does not come close to the real-life human judgement via physical mirrors and is distracting most of the times, especially in the night.

I would want the cams to be complementary to the mirrors rather than replacing them entirely. Like a cam to reduce the blind spots in addition to the mirror would be great. And as it is we are all having lots of screen time in every aspect of our life, why to add more screen time if it can be avoided. Another aspect can be the impact while driving in the night, feel it can put further strain on eyes.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

For ORVM's .. NO. While there are advantages if the quality is same as i see in a Lexus . I'm not sure if i would be comfortable looking at many screens sitting in a driver's seat. It will take getting sometime getting used to. There is always a question of electronics failure and we have too many possibilities of it happening (rain, dust, bad roads, rodents to name a few). Driving a car without rear view is definitely not we would recommend or do as it is a recipe for disaster

I have thought about having an additional screen on top of the IRVM to get a good clear 130 or 150 degree wide angle feed from a camera behind the car. A fail safe option - I will still have the mirror if electronics fail.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted yes - even with conventional mirrors I need to take my eyes off the road to check them. So I don't think I will have to make an additional effort to look at a digital screen.

Also, removing the ORVMs will definitely reduce drag and improve the look of the vehicle.

The only worry I have is what happens if the camera or display conks off for any reason (including water on the camera as mentioned in other posts) - not just in terms of the effect on safety (which would be the same as losing an ORVM to a rogue biker, I suppose) but also in terms of repair cost. The more the number of gizmos, the higher the chances of failure and hence the corresponding repair cost. That is my only worry, otherwise I am fine with having digital mirrors.

In any case, digital mirrors are going to be the future, whether we like them or not.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted YES. At one point in time, I had contemplated installing such a system in my Octavia but sold the car before I could execute upon it.

I happen to live in an area of Delhi where cars are prone to side-view mirror theft. Owing to the small size of a camera they should be less prone to theft.

I have witnessed the theft of a side-view mirror of my own car. The thief just put both palms of his hands on the mirror, straightened his elbows, and stood up on his toes. Thus putting his full body weight on the mirror thereby breaking in off its "neck". It happened so fast, within a span of 5-6 seconds that it was futile to even chase after him. I just cursed him at the top of my voice from my second-floor balcony, while he must be grinning, speeding off on his scooter.

To date, I have experienced theft of 8 sets of side-view mirrors, 3 of my Octavia, 3 of my OHC, and 2 of my Xcent.

Considering the costs of rear-view camera installations, side-view cameras should not cost high. But surely the carmakers will charge a hefty premium till the feature becomes a standard in low-medium cost cars. After hearing that the new XUV500 due to launch will have a full LCD instrument cluster, side-view cameras as standard should not be that far off.

Some possible Pros of Side-view cameras.
1. Better Aerodynamics
2. Less prone to theft
3. Wider angle of view (Less blind spots)
4. Should fare better during night driving
5. Driver may not/won't have to move his neck to look at the far-side mirror

possible cons
1. Cost
2. Added possible point of failure with respect to almost flawless mirrors.

But if properly executed the pros will surely outweigh the cons.
