Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

I think this is one of the good usages of technology, and I would definitely welcome this. I voted YES!

Given the advantages that these digital mirrors have over conventional mirrors (no blind spot, maybe much better night vision, no fogging in rain, better view in the rain, better aerodynamics, and maybe a few others), I think this is a welcome technology. The only minor issue will be getting used to these, which I am sure will happen quickly once we start using these mirrors.

Unlike some other examples where certain technology is inherently dangerous (such as touchscreens for frequently required controls), I do not think this technology has any usage related dangers to worry about.

And besides, given the automobile technology roadmap in general, digital mirrors are inevitable in automobiles. I am looking forward to this!

Not only the Lexus; the diminuitive Honda - E also features rear facing high resolution camera's instead of conventional outside rear view mirrors.
Benefits are plenty: lesser weight, less moving parts, less aerodynamic drag etc.
If implemented in India, theft and pilferage will remain the topmost concern followed by breakage / replacement costs. I don't think quality and durability will be an issue as it will be the same, if not better then your standrd reverse cameras, which last a long time.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted Yes. I have realised we have to change with time.

I never thought I'd become an AT convert (over MTs), I'd buy a Skoda (just got a Superb), would love EVs (am now welcoming them with open arms), would not drive Japanese cars (at one time, I drove ONLY Japanese), would fall in love with the way Korean cars drive (Seltos + new Creta + Carnival), enjoy Volvos (new S60), sell my '97 Jeep (for the new Thar) and many, many more such cases.

Have learnt one thing = Never say never .

If digital mirrors go mass market, you can bet that billions of dollars would go into ensuring they are superior to conventional ORVMs in every way, be it ergonomics, visibility & convenience.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted Yes. I dont understand what the fuss is about. Almost all cars now come with rear-view camera and quite a few come with 360 degree cameras. As the technology advances, we would start seeing more cameras and displays to aid safe driving.
I remember seeing similar posts about rear-view cameras more than a decade ago with some stating the real drivers wont need rear-view cameras etc.

Voted for Yes.
Camera cannot replace mirror, but in this case I would prefer the digital mirrors but with few conditions :
1. Must be better concealed, weather proof.
2. Replacement of screen and camera shouldn't be heart-attack inducing.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted yes, last time I checked it would cost nearly 5k to fix the mirror on my Punto. The camera won't get damaged that easily as it stays with the body line for most part. A better field of view should also help.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voting for a conventional mirror.

I don't mind a conventional mirror with "Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than their are "
But a digital mmirror with " objects in the rearview mirror have frozen or gone past you " - NO.

But a digital mirror - definite NO. I believe there are some things in life that can continue in the old fashioned / analogue / non digital way. While digital may have a lot of advantages, the disadvantages are far too risky.
Imagine a second or 2 delay in the feed can lead to an accident.
Imagine getting a software update when you are overtaking.
Imagine the screen freezing.
Cost of replacement of a digital mirror.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted Yes.

I feel this is inevitable with changing times, and also with manufacturers trying to tuck-in every possible ways to improve aerodynamic efficiency, all those additional protrusions on the wings may eventually go off.

In fact I was expecting this to catch up much earlier (related thread - (New Tech: Digital Rear View Mirror?))

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

I voted for a YES.

I am someone who always complains about new tech, but in the end finds it more useful and convenient.
The World will keep evolving. All the new technology will be implemented sometime or the other. If it is defective, obviously it will be eliminated.
The only cause for concern I have with digital mirrors is the extra load on battery, also when the car is switched off trying to see what's behind.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

It'd take a bit of getting used to and perhaps this is new to cars. Mercedes-Benz have been using it on their Actros line-up for close to 2 years now and the drivers I follow on social media seem to like it. Big wins are better aerodynamics and lesser blind spots.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Resounding NO. Another electrical failure point, which we can do without. Imagine screens not firing up or loose connection from the camera to display unit or flickering display - that's bound to be more disturbing than anything else.

Best to have conventional mirrors or atleast have conventional mirrors as redundancy.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted No. just too many screens. Also I’m a sucker for classic design - love the dual analogue MID and hate the newer digital ones. Also mechanical failures are comparatively easier to fix while electric/electronic failures aren’t.

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted yes. I use the rear cam button on my Nexon (Old gen had it) as frequently as possible, especially at traffic signals when two-wheelers get so close. Once or twice I've even got down from the vehicle to tell off a vehicle which is grazing/touching my car. I love tech, and this certainly offers a better field of vision. Take any car/model/brand and blind-spots are bound to be there in the mirrors. But this eliminates it, and offers crisp vision. Why talk of electrical failure point, when we are just getting started?

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Voted NO. Let's consider taking this further. What if we eliminate all the glass area including the front windscreen? Let's put sheet metal all over and provide superior crash protection. Let's use multiple high resolution video camera to provide a 360 degree field of vision to all car occupants, including IR and night vision modes to ensure you can drive fast in all kinds of weather.
Will you be comfortable with such a car?

Re: Digital Mirrors - The new future? Would you be comfortable driving a car with one?

Though can't vote (Posts limit), but will support the replacement of mirrors with more technology / digital solutions. We already have a working example of technology with Auto Dimming Rear View Mirrors (Skeptics would have still questioned the efficacy of sensors & gels being used).

A high definition & weather sealed camera, will have more shelf life to exposed mirrors. Similarly, it will be less prone to fogging & water accumulation, will negate blind spot better and may remove requirement for frequent readjustment of sideview mirrors (when driven by different family members)

Today, complete housing replacement of a rear view mirrors costs more than Rs 5,000 /- so this should be cost effective too.

Only thing, I will be missing is constant engraved warning of "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear"
