Tata Motors launches upgraded variants of Spacio

Homegrown auto major Tata Motors on Wednesday launched an upgraded range of its entry level utility vehicle, Tata Spacio, priced between Rs 5.1 lakh to Rs 5.4 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

With the new product offering, Spacio Gold Plus, the company is aiming to increase its penetration in the rapidly growing family vehicle segment in the semi-urban market, Tata Motors said in a statement.

Spacio Gold Plus would be powered by a 3 litre turbocharged diesel engine and would offer increased power and torque ratings of 70 PS (at 3000 rpm) and 223 Nm (at 2200 rpm) respectively, the statement said.

The company said Spacio Gold Plus would be fuel efficient and would offer 15 kmpl.

Spacio Gold Plus has been launched in two variants, both sporting power steering with a soft touch steering wheel, front bucket seats, new decals and refined interiors.

Both the variants come in 2 seating configurations: 6 plus driver and 8 plus driver. The upper variant would come with air conditioning, central locking and a CD-MP3 music system, it said.

The Spacio range is the entry level variant of the popular Tata Sumo. Tata Motors sold 47,893 utility vehicles, including 32,007 of the Sumo family, during 2006-07.

Na. na.. Sumo does not have a real competitor and it still sells. (unless Toyota decides to re-introduce Qualis)

Ya that was the only car which could really compete with it. It still commands a huge resale.

The Spacio has been the crude version of the Sumo with the 407 engine. Its nice to see some creature comforts like PS audio and airconditioning. Without PS the Spacio must be a pain to drive. Now it seems sorted. The Spacio is a hit as call centre cabs here in Mumbai and these additions should help sales further.

The Spacio doesnt have any real competition in its segment.

Tata aiming to increase the penetration in the family vehicle segment with Spacio. I doubt, in rural areas yes possible, but cities I don't think they can. We have better options with Tavera.

finally, improvements come with improvement in power and torque too.
5.4 exshowroom seems as a good price too, the new Bolero DI with PS and Aircon sells for around 5.8 OTR in delhi.
Sumo's USP would be its fuel economy, and ofcourse space

I still remember when the sumo was launched, it was a treat to see sumos come to a stop at the redlights, with the rear up and front down

So Spacio gets the 3.0 Turbo,
AFAIK this engine is the same used in the 74PS Tata 407 truck, and is supposed to be super reliable.
This engine with different head is used in the 3.0 DICOR, pumping out 110 horses.
Looks like Tata intends to cash in on the economy of Volumes.
With the exact same block going in Tata 407 Truck, Spacio, Tata safari they can really make costs real low.

Just a thought, since the Sumo continues with no proper competition with respect to the sales charts, why is it that the bolero was never in the running in the cab/people mover segment?

The Tavera was able to pull in some sales, but with the demise of the Qualis, the Sumo has been steamrolling competition. Tata seem to have a jackpot with both the Indicab and the Sumo being the favourite among the cab segment.

Is it true that Sumo gives better mileage with this new engine (Tata claims 15kmpl ave).? Why it can not do the same in Safari which is having the same engine? I hear the FE of Safari around not more than 11 ave. Even the Dicor doesn't really help in any way in FE for Safari, if I am not wrong! If Safari can get somewhere around 15kmpl ave, it is one of a very few good reasons to buy Safari!

That used to happen whenever brakes were applied. The problem was overcome (I think in 1999) by redesigning the front suspension. The hydraulic shock absobers were placed outside the coil springs besides some other changes to the suspension geometry.

In the DICOR avtar, this engine develops 115 PS.
There's another avtar of this engine that is fitted in Tata 410, the Euro-III successor of 407 which develops 100 PS.

Isn't Spacio a variant of Sumo, won't this eat into Sumo Victa territory?

Sumo Victa is more refined and is targetted at users in Urban areas whereas Spacio is cruder/noisier and is targetted at users in Semi-Urban and Rural areas. Spacio is more suitable for overloading and hill climbing due to its bigger, higher-torque-at-lower-RPM engine.

Even if Spacio eats into Sumo Victa territory, Tata loses nothing.
