Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Only hope this CEO will stick to his assertions to be backed by the head honcho Mr Anand Mahindra. We have seen them with the "foot in the mouth" disease going for two, three, four and four plus wheeler dreams with clouds of confusion. The Ford, Renault and Ssangyong saga and again a comeback "Ford Revival Saga" are all fresh in our memories.

The remnants in the island of lost souls are the Ford Escort, Ssangyong Rexton, Mahindra Logan, Mahindra Verito and now the KUV/ TUV/ smaller XUV siblings.

Let's hope they stick and do well with their core business after smelling success with the Thar. After some months, say by October or November 2021, seeing Creta and Seltos sales breaking all records (festival season sales) they should not again announce their re-entry in the small SUV segment with a refreshed and uglier KUV 100 Pininfarina Collector's Edition .

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

A good move to focus on strengths but I seriously hope they are not trying to take a leaf out of Toyota's book, which has reduced itself to a 2 trick pony in pursuit of profits.

I am not sure if giving up on the compact SUV segment is a good move. Mahindra isn't an aspirational brand at all, so if they launch products above a certain threshold, they will probably not find any takers (Rexton, Alturas?).

Giving up on a segment which is fiercely contested to focus on a less competitive segment might benefit in the short term. But what happens when more manufacturers join this party? Will they give up that too?

Maybe Mahindra is seeing something which others can't, and hope this strategy works for them.

By the way, what about Jawa? Will that be axed/sold?

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Feel everyone is reading too much into this.

AFAIK, Mahindra never had any intention to enter the sedan market, if you discount the Escort and Logan/Verito projects. So the statement that they will never enter the sedan/hatchback segment is not that big a deal.

Neither do they have the expertise, nor is the segment enticing enough.

About the mini-SUV segment, I feel they are just pointing at the KUV100. By their own admission, a terrible flop. So they are not going to burn their hands on a tallboy hatch anytime soon. The fat margins on the upcoming XUV500 and Scorpio will be enough for them to raise funds for the dormant XUV400 project. With that ready, they won't really need to go below the 9 lakhs segment.

More like tapping their core strength and become like Jeep or GMC.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

This actually is a good news IMO. Instead of half-hearted attempts which are bound to fail, better focus on areas where they have a head-start and try and win those. My first suggestion is to come up with, as suggested earlier in the thread also, a 4 metre plus XUV 300 and call it XUV 400 may be. With new XUV500 looking more premium, there should be a decent space for an XUV400 right in between the XUV300 and XUV500. It's 5 star safety rating and wide rear bench which can actually accommodate 5 can be a distinctive feature against Seltos/Creta.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

I am a former Logan owner with around 12 years of ownership and 1.8 lakh kms on the odo. That was a decent product marred by problems with the JV between Mahindra and Renault. A few tweaks to the looks and price would have been good. But they chose to only change the name, variants and leave it at that.

Again KUV 100 ( not a great fan of its looks) was let down by the engine and mechanicals, I believe. There were a lot of first time buyers opting for it. Somewhere Mahindra lost the plot and the vehicles were plagued with problems.

Both Tata and Mahindra don't yet have a refined Petrol engine yet IMHO.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Seems like a perfect and realistic move from M&M. They failed miserably in KUV & Verito and don't want to repeat the disaster. Why waste money and resources?

I think in the future, their line up will consist of TUV 300, TUV 300 Plus (Bolero/Bolero Plus), Marazzo, Scorpio, XUV 300, XUV 400 (Creta rival), XUV 500, and Alturas (should be renamed XUV 700 for better brand recall). Quite a competent product line, I must say.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

In fact I think they must create a family only based on the XUV series for the urban markets and focus on retooling the Soorpio for the rur-ban areas. They should get rid of the TUV lineup as well which fits nowhere from the future standpoint, neither too comfortable nor very capable product, also may have limited potential to upgrade for future safety norms.
Also I hope they create a better brand name than “Pura Vison” for their all- electric premium vehicles . Pura Vision sounds like a TV which also emits UV light to purify air in the living room.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

XUV 300 will stay also will get some minor cosmetic update too, even an electric version of the same too was in plan.
Meanwhile Bolero is not going anywhere, will have an update as government mandate passenger airbag, but not to expect any drastic changes what so ever.
Probably with all the changes going in and around M&M they will probably drop the plan for KUV 100 Update, yes !! there was a plan to update that weird bug looking contraption.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Big mistake. This is like Rahul Bajaj handing over the scooter market to competitors. You need to build a brand from the lowest segment. Tata is now #3 in India despite no proper automatics in Nexon, Altroz etc.

Mahindra is not Toyota. India is M&Ms biggest market, whereas Toyota India is too small compared to the global Toyota sales.

+Maruti realized they were failing in some segments and came up with the Baleno & Ciaz. (MSIL still deosn’t have a Creta competitor though)
+Even Tata’s portfolio will be nearly complete - all they need is an SUV between the Harrier and Nexon
+Hyundai needs to be more proactive in selling the Tucson & Santa Fe

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Mahindra have everything from two wheelers to tractors in India. Surprisingly, they have not thought about ATVs in India, which they have in North America. Even though India has moved forward leaps and bounds on the technological front, what we can't deny is India still is an agricultural country and a large one too. A capable and affordable ATV from the SUV specialist definitely has the potential in our market IMO.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

They should very well stick to their strength - rugged, offroad focused vehicles.

Bolero, Scorpio , XUV5OO and of course Thar was marketed well, stayed within this image - Scorpio`s marketing was making fun of cars for good measure and then they really should not have released the Verito.

The ads for XUV3OO , TUV3OO , Marazzo etc were totally disconnected from the other products. The recent interview with Veejay, he admitted that trying to chase volumes and make money they failed miserably, this coming from management is a good realization.

Hope they make vehicles that are desirable, its the only way to differentiate your product, things like Safety and creature comforts become standard as you go, but a car that you feel excited about - that is a tough act.

Love to see that happening, probably Alturas replacement, or renaming the same?

Coming next, XUV 1IOO - pronounced as One-eye-double-oh!

Seriously though they should pick names with more character, like Thar, which people can get behind.

Re: Mahindra will not enter sedan & mini SUV segments

Along with the XUV7OO and XUV9OO , Mahindra also files a trademark for the XUV4OO. That makes a total of 5 XUV series models.
