Thanks Aditya for the April sales data, here are some more inputs:
COVID woes catch-up with the Auto Industry. The sales declined by 10.6 percent in Apr’21 v/s Mar’21.
This was primarily due to the resurgence of Covid cases in the country and multiple markets were under lockdown in the second half of April 2021.
- Maruti Suzuki leads the pack and records the highest increase in Market Share and gained 1.8 percent MS in Apr’21 v/s Mar’21.
- Hyundai India sales declined 6.8 percent M-o-M, while the Industry declined by over 10 percent. It helped Hyundai increase its Market Share to 17.1 percent in April
2021 against 16.4 percent Market Share in March 2021.
- Tata Motors volumes dipped over 15 percent in April 2021 and the Market Share fell below 9 percent.
- Mahindra retained the Fourth rank and was one of the few OEMs to grow in April 2021 over March 2021
- Toyota registered the highest Market Share fall in Apr'21 over Mar'21 and recorded <10k
volumes last month.
- Honda Cars volumes registered the highest MoM increase in sales and it outsold Renault in April 202
- Nissan and MG now fight for the 10th rank on the table. Nissan registered the MoM decline of 16 percent and fell below 3.5k volumes in Apr'21. It anyhow outsold
MG which declined over 52 percent in Apr'21 vs Mar'21.
Highlights of Mar-21 dispatch figures:
- Maruti’s WagonR emerged as India's best-selling Car for the first time in 2021.
- Only 2 OEMs had their offerings in the Top 10 list – Maruti & Hyundai.
- Tata’s premium hatchback Altroz displaces Hyundai’s i20, and becomes the 2nd in April sales figures.
- Hyundai’s CUV Venue outsells Maruti’s Vitara Brezza by a mere margin of 25 units to become the best seller in that segment.
- Honda dominates the executive sedan segment with CITY establishing the lead consistently M-O-M
Largest segment (volumes) – Hatchback
- The top 10 models accounted for 50% of April’21 sales.
- Hatchbacks dominated with 10 models in the Top 25
- SUVs followed closely with 9 models
- MUVs had 3 models in the Top 25. Overall UVs had 12 models on the list!
- Sedans have only 2 offerings in the Top 25 and both were Sub-4m Compact Sedans (Dzire and Amaze)
Top Manufactures for the Month:
Maruti Suzuki:
-It was de-growth ( -0.6%) over Mar-21 sales, but gains Market share of 1.8%
-Retains top 5 slots in the 10 best sellers for August and holds 7 positions in the top 10.
-Maruti’s WagonR becomes the bestselling car for both OEM and the Nation.
-Maruti’s undisputed EECO sells 11+k units and is in the top 10.
-Most models shows a negative M-O-M , except for Dzire Ignis, S-Presso and XL6.
Hyundai:
-Hyundai too shows a M-O-M negative growth of 7%, but has a Market share improvement of 0.7%
-Creta retains as Hyundai’s best-selling model and India’s No.1
- Grand i10 comes second with a M-O-M increase of 5%.
-Hyundai’s Santro is a flop doing just ~2.6k units
TATA Motors:
-Tata Motors registered a massive M-O-M negative sale of 15% and a market share loss of 0.5%
-Nexon retains as the best-seller for Tata
-All cars from Tata’s stable has a de-growth in April contributing to the massive negative sales/dispatches.
May sales will be worse as lock-down woes seem to continue Though manufacturing units could function, anticipating reduced demand and keeping employee safety in mind, multiple OEMs have decided to shut down their manufacturing in parts of May 2021. Also there could be a localized lock-down like scenario announced shortly, state-wise.

While sales have declined from March 2021, people also are playing conservative and buying a smaller car than what they can afford due to the economic uncertainty in the A-B2 segments.
Swift, Baleno, Wagon R and Alto were the top 4 cars sold in both March and April. Just that Swift and Baleno were #1 and #2 in March and #2 and #4 in April.
This effect isn't seen in the premium C2 segment though. Creta continues to do 12.6K units courtesy the heavy back-log. Also City is compensating for the drop in Seltos sales.

Honda City's increase in sales is due to the poor figures logged in Mar-21, due to the semi-conductor shortage issue. They have a back log of bookings as of now.
Looks like now is the not the best time to upgrade cars, at least in segment upto Rs. 20-25 Lakhs. The sales figures seem resilient considering the impact of Covid shutdowns and semi-conductor shortages, despite the recent avalanches of price rise across brands (like literally, ~15 Lakhs for a top end Sub Compact SUV has become a new norm).
Used car evaluations are going up too (personal experience with my Dec'11 Swift, valuation rose some 27% between Nov'20 and Apr'21).
The pent-up demand and the renewed interest in the importance of personal mobility due to Covid-19 may entail new highs for the car manufacturers in the country once the situation normalizes.
Jeep Wrangler cannot be ZERO as being shown as they launched CKD and a few units were sold. Looks like an error somewhere.
A solitary Ford Figo wholesaled to a Ford dealer in April '21?
Is Ford discontinuing the Figo or has production been impacted by the ongoing global "chip" shortage?
Looks like Citroen never made significant sales. I note a handful of Karoq's and many T-Rocs in the mix
Am I missing something or Skoda sells only <10 Octavias per month? And 100+ Superb's at the same time? Only brand with D2 > D1 sales?

Those Octavias are the exclusive CBU RS245s (200 units only) which were imported into the country. They are bound to sell less than the CKD Superb
There is a page on Instagram which has listed RS245s sold in the country based on pictures he has received. He has managed to list only 104 units out of 200. So there are more cars which people have not released pictures of and then their are few which I believe are still in stock in some stockyard in India.
The state with the highest number of RS245s is Karnataka.

I think the April dispatches numbers need to be viewed in context of the general pandemic situation. I am sure that May dispatches will be significantly affected as most of the stock may be unsold due to the present regional lockdowns.
