Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

Scorpio was the original bad boy car in the market and it kept up it's persona over the years with steady changes and kudos to Mahindra for maintaining it.

Even the ads were centered around this and the tag line "Norhing else will do" has been embraced wholeheartedly by many customers.

Yes, it has it's flaws, but the positives outweigh the negatives by many miles.

Hope the new gen Scorpio lives up to it's predecessor's reputation.

The Scorpio is a legend. It has basically filled the void left by the Tata Sumo.

M&M made the Scorpio more butch looking than the plain Sumo. A few characteristics both cars share:
1. Abuse friendly build; You’ll see these cars loaded with 12+ people in the places like Sikkim where locals use taxis to get to work, school etc
2. Fair to very good reliability along with cheap + easily available parts
3. Option of 4x4
4. Low price (The Kia Seltos/Hyundai Creta look overpriced in terms of metal for the $$$)
5. Macho image: Politicians and prominent people (especially in villages/towns) love the B-I-G SUV

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

Apart from people who keep some basic knowledge on cars, no one is interested in crash ratings. Let's put Scorpio aside, how are the Koreans managing the nos. even with pathetic GNCAP ratings? worse some are not even tested. The Scorpio sells mostly to the mass market, the owners are usually not your regular 9 to 6 office going guys. It is tough, gives that macho image in villages and rural areas where you need to send a message even through your car. Most of all, it looks amazing even today. Simply put, the Scorpio will continue to impress with it's silent volumes, just like the Bolero and Omni.

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

It took only a few minutes of sitting on the driver`s seat back in 2014 to seal the deal. I was surprised at how good it is to drive and to sit in. Two generations that came afterwards took this even further, the current one is a hoot to drive, really quick.

Scorpio has changed what we expect of an automobile.

I love the Scorpio for the following reasons;
1. Easy to drive.
2. Good enough ride quality on smooth highways (better than the current Thar).
3. Rough roads, bad roads, no roads, no problem.
4. Cheap to maintain.
5. Its fast for a high GC SUV.

Many boys who are not allowed the Thar (irrespective which version) are given the green-light (with a sullen face-palm) for the Scorpio.

It is an amazing ride and I love the high perched steering. When I test drove one (5-6) years ago, all was fine, till my wife sat in the middle row.

No-ways!

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

In the markets where Force Cruiser is considered the benchmark for comfort, a Scorpio still represents the 'well do to do' who do not need to be stuffed into a Force cruiser. I mean in northern country Scorpio still demands a lot of respect. So much so that a well kept example of the same in SLE variant from 2010-11 era demands well over 500K. Well, being from the northern parts I am also a fanboy of The Getaway, the long forgotten ancestor of modern day V-crosses everyone drools over .

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

My cousin brother bought a Scorpio in December last year without taking a Test drive. We had gone to 2-3 Mahindra dealers in Pune and none of them had a test drive Vehicle available. The only experience was that of a Scorpio which had come for delivery and we got to sit in it. He got the Base Variant as it had a discount of 48000 and specced it as per his liking. Also the engine, gearbox and safety features are almost the same for the base, mid and top variants. He was very clear about the Scorpio and didn't have a look at any other vehicles.

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

After owning the Scorpio for 11 long years, I must say that one major reason is also the High Resale Value of the car in any part of India.

I had a 2009 BS3 SLE Model with the MHawk Engine and had bought it in 2009 for nearly about ₹9.5-10L. Even after 11years of ownership, I ended up selling it for ₹4.3L here in Kolkata, last October.
So even after 11 long years, I was able to get 40%+ of the On-road price I had paid in 2009, that too for a BS3 vehicle!

Scorpio has a really High Resale Value in India due to its Cult Following and the good Brand name in the used car market.

In simple words, a Scorpio is a Scorpio and there is and will be no replacement for this car. Indians not only love the car but also the whole personality and aura it brings with itself. The road presence and the wow factor it holds in India are unmatched!

Also, the Driving Position, the Commanding View, and the ease of driving this machine are simply too good and often referred to as the "King of the Road".

After driving it for 11 years, I can vouch for the MHawk Engine and the drivability of this gem of an engine! To be honest, other companies should really learn how to make good Diesel engines from Mahindra.
I also believe that this engine has a lot to do with the Scorpio's image in India today and had also paved the way for Mahindra way back in 2008 when it was first launched. There's no other diesel heart like the MHawk in India, to date. Frankly, I miss the engine from my Scorpio the most!

Also, another surprising point is that the Scorpio is fairly easy to drive and kinda is a Driver's Machine. I am sure many Scorpio owners will be able to relate to this. The Scorpio may look big and bulky from the outside hence, difficult to drive but once you are in the driver's seat, you'll instantly fall in love and would find how easy it is to drive a Scorpio!

If maintained well and serviced properly, the Scorpio can be your loyal companion for many years and thousands of kilometers.

Many might call the Scorpio as a cheap alternative to the Fortuner. Well, that is true but honestly, Scorpio isn't and doesn't need to be an alternative to anything. The people who want or love a Scorpio will anyway and any day choose it and practically, this was the car which made India fall in love with SUVs, a trend which we see today.

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

The Scorpio is the true replacement for the Tata SUMO which Tata never cared to update properly or release a new model of, other than some sticker jobs.

Its a rugged, decently made, Macho looking vehicle that can seat many and go everywhere in India without anyone looking down on you, all without breaking the bank.

There was a market for such a vehicle then, in the 1990s to and early 2000s and there is still a market for it now. Its just that there is no other vehicle in this class to offer Scorpio the competition in terms of price vs value.

It fills a lot of roles well for a lot of people.

If you are in a Scorpio, you could be anyone from a politician, Gunda, contractor, actor, off-roader/SUV enthusiast, police officer/govt. Official, Rich village landowner, taxi driver etc.
No one will look at you and say you belong to a certain class because you could be anyone from a rich politician to a taxi driver

On a lighter note, you mean Mahindra has democratised car owning and achieved a true classless society with the Scorpio!

Re: Curious case of the Mahindra Scorpio - How does it manage consistently strong sales numbers?

As early as today morning, the black Scorpio which overtook my XUV 500 W10, got an envied eye. If me, sitting inside my more luxurious sibling for the last 5 years with 130K on odo, and my heart still can beat for a complete black Scorpio, people can understand what a vehicle the cult Scorpio is.

In Delhi NCR, driving a black Scorpio or a white one, is an experience in itself. You have the right of way, mostly.

Also, IMHO calling the Scorpio as poor man's Fortuner, might be a wrong approach. Scorpio is a brand in itself.

One of the other factors is, it is extensively used by politicians (especially District/State secretaries of most of the political parties) which created a lot of confidence about its ruggedness and reliabliity.

And cops as well. I was driving on the Chennai - Bangalore highway once and stopped at a restaurant parking to answer a call. I was wearing a black half sleeved shirt and had a very short haircut.

A police Bolero parked next to me and the constable driving it very respectfully asked me if I was posted to their station. We both had a good laugh when I told him I wasn't a police officer.
