May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

This month's (May) sales has no real comparisons to each manufacturer's sales figures due to lock down happening at staggered dates all across India:

Even in such a situation:

- Compact SUV segment contributed over 23% of the passenger cars sold in India for May 2021.

-Mid SUVs followed closely to the second position

-Compact Hatchback segment was pushed to the third position

-The only segment to register an MoM increase in volumes was the Premium Sedan segment and was primarily due to the healthy dispatches of Octavia( 102).

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A weird month to say the least. Maruti's market share at 32%. And the Korean siblings of Hyundai and Kia add up to 35%! Of course main street was shut down in many places, and these numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt. But, this could well become the norm if Maruti does not up its game. Ageing product line, no diesel (CNG/LPG is not diesel, dear Maruti), and not a single electric car (even if it were half baked like some of its peers) on the market. Signs out there for Maruti to watch out for.

On the other hand, look at the macro economic picture. The overall size of the market has mostly remained stagnant for a decade now. With reducing hatchback sales, and increase in sales of other larger car segments.

Couple that with 2020's zero sale April, small numbers May. And this year's poor performing May, and expectedly poor performing June. Automakers are loosing out 2 months of both the years. Their fixed costs of operations, ecosystem of dealerships and service centers, all impacted adversely.

Hopefully there will be a turnaround, where market size itself will increase, and players have enough room to produce more and sell more. Adding to overall economic recovery and growth.

Of course this month will have to be ignored w.r.t specific model sales. For example, 20 units of Innova Crysta. Company has been struggling with operations due to local lockdown restrictions. That is no indication of its sales potential. (But I am gleefully waiting for Alcazar launch and its impact on Crysta and Safari).

So, a couple more months and we would know, if its going to be a V-shaped recovery or a very slow and undesirable pace of recovery.

This month's sales data does not mean anything right now but who knows someday we might actually see Maruti's market share falling near the levels of current month. This won't happen anytime soon but will certainly happen if Maruti doesn't improve their products to match with the latest the market has to offer.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Hyundai has shipped 1300 Alcazars in May '21? News on our forum says Alcazar is open to bookings from today onwards -
https://www.team-bhp.com/news/hyunda...-bookings-open

Are all of these media drive cars/demo cars? Is it is so, funny really, Hyundai managed to produce and ship 1300 units, that's close to ~1 car/dealer.
This month's (June '21) data will clarify on actual sales and dispatches of Alcazar

Rapid rising to #3 in the C2 Sedan space, comfortably beating Ciaz with a 2:1 ratio. Temporary, though? Yaris sees no sales, hope Belta(~Ciaz) will drive some folks towards Toyota in this segment.

Hyundai+Kia manages to beat MSIL for the 1st time. Again, pockets of our country faced lockdown at various times during last month and the fact that MSIL's manufacturing plants were attending to O2 requirements may have helped Hyundai achieve this feat.

Nothing else to write about, can consider this month as an exception to our industry, with no real trends emerging for further discussions.

Jigar Shah

These would be media cars, cars sent to various dealers for TD, demo and exhibition at public places (questionable in today's times). When a car is launched, they'll try to have several cars available at every dealer: variants, fuel + transmission combos etc.

Only dispatch data is available so you'd not know actual sales unless you can access RTO database.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

As many members here have said, these sales numbers for May do not mean much because most of the country was still in lockdown & the country won't fully open up before end of June.

But I feel that we are at the cusp of a major upward revision of the car ownership numbers in India. Last year's 1st phase of Covid, which was relatively mild, spurred a desire in many people of the need to have an independent, safe & reliable personal transport. With the devastating Phase 2 of Covid, the insecurity of people is only going to increase & those who can afford, want to be safely cocooned in a car rather than take their chances on crowded public transport or on a 2 wheeler.

Earlier, many who could afford a car but chose not to purchase would cite the parking issues, crowded streets & availability of reliable Ola/Uber service. Now that the workplace model is probably going to result in a sort of a hybrid of online & offline office presence, most would not mind going back to their less crowded Tier 2 & Tier 3 hometowns. Even in cities like Bangalore, there is less of an incentive for people to live closer to workplace & move to cheaper outlying areas. With Jio Fibe & Airtel Xtreme Fiber giving high speed & reliable internet connections even in Tier 2 & 3 towns, decentralization of office work is bound to happen.

Since they say that Covid is likely to be with us for the next 3-4 years & the fear of being amongst crowds and risk an infection, I predict that the stagnant India car market of 3 million car sales a year is poised for at least 25-30% Y-O-Y growth every year for the next 3-4 years.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Vehicle Retail sales fall by 54.79% (MoM) in May 2021

According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), Vehicle Retail sales fell by 54.79% in May 2021 compared to April 2021. Similarly, sales of all categories of vehicles fell by a huge degree with two-wheelers falling by 53%, three-wheelers by 76%, PVs by 59%, tractors by 57% and CVs by 66%, respectively.

May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-fada-press-release-fada-releases-may-21-vehicle-retail-data_finalpage001.jpg

Overall sales for the month of May 2021 stood at 5,35,855 units, compared to 11,85,374 units in April 2021. Since India was under complete lockdown in May 2020, a YoY comparison cannot be represented. However, compared to May 2019, when 18,22,566 units were sold, total vehicle retails have fallen by 71%.

May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-fada-press-release-fada-releases-may-21-vehicle-retail-data_finalpage002.jpg

This fall in sales is largely due to the lockdown imposed in various states during the month due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Apart from urban markets, this time, even rural areas were badly hit.

The tractor segment registered a de-growth of 56.60% in May 2021. 16,616 units were sold as opposed to 38,285 in April 2021.

Two-wheeler sales decreased by 52.52% to 4,10,757 units from 8,65,134 units in the previous month.

Three-wheeler sales were down by 75.90%. 5,215 units were sold compared to 21,636 units in April 2021.

Passenger vehicle sales declined by 58.96% compared to the previous month. 85,733 units were sold compared to 2,08,883 units in April 2021.

Commercial vehicle sales dropped by 65.91%. 17,534 units were sold in May 2021 compared to 51,436 units in the previous month.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Things seem to be very tough for Ford. I really doubt if they will continue in the Indian market. EcoSport and Endeavour are the only two products which are earning for Ford. EcoSport is losing sales numbers and I suspect it will be even worse in the coming days. Ford really needs something like a Nissan Magnite. Removing the spare wheel and expecting it to bring sales numbers will simply not work. I really doubt if they will stay.

Re: May 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The only analysis from this horrible month is that given a choice, OEM's prefer to make compact SUV and mid SUV over compact hatchback which usually is the best seller segment.. Goes on to prove that SUV's are the real deal for now. Also shows how Indian consumers have higher budget at their disposal!

What happened to the numbers of Thar. Why did the factory dispatch numbers drop considering the waiting period is almost a year?
