Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Anyone noticed that the Compass is also pulling Jeep out of the sales quagmire, slowly but steadily. So there is hope for the niche SUV lovers out there. FCA need to bring in something else to further this cause.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Parsing these numbers...
1. Has Skoda Kushaq reached steady state? Even if we expect the sales to pick up to 3500 units a month, where does this place them against their stated goals? It is in the Hector/Harrier range for now.
2. Despite good initial press and demand, have Kiger/Magnite plateaued? Or is it some sort of supply issue? They are distant 4th behind Brezza, Venue and Sonet.
3. B1 and B2 have fallen, while C1 and C2 have remained steady. I have 2 contradicting hypothesis - a) people's buying power is increasing and they are moving from B1/B2 to higher segments or b) B1/B2 buyers are getting squeezed because of the pandemic and are postponing their buying decision. Which one is more plausible?

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Good information and some interesting insights:

- Toyota is doing decent numbers of the rebadged Marutis, that should make their dealers happy. Maybe this is the future where more rebadged cars will sell in India
- The Renault Nissan twins are doing well in their individual avatars of Kiger and Magnite and it looks to be a close contest, Triber is another good seller for Renault, makes you wonder why Nissan is not rebadging that and giving some extra heft to the Datsun range.
- Very sad to see the numbers of Ford, even a model like Ecosport is down, hope they at least continue as a contract manufacturer

Good to see you here , came across your YouTube channel a few days back and I have to say you put great content, short and informative without any bias.

I don't think so, the average unaware janta still buys swift in bucket loads. Crash test reports rarely do make any difference in the market, the masses don't give a damn about safety. Even in this very forum you'll see a lot of them preferring tin cans with mileage and features (read - large tablets) over safe and well built but lesser equipped cars .

Until last year, demand was a challenge, but now, supply is becoming a bigger problem due to the shortage of semiconductors. It is said that for the first time, customers may not get lucrative schemes this festive season.

FADA expects to see a demand-supply mismatch in the PV segment and low demand for 2-wheelers.

August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-3.jpg

Overall sales for the month of August 2021 stood at 13,84,711 units, compared to 12,09,550 units in August 2020. However, compared to August 2019, when 16,24,217 units were sold, total vehicle retails have fallen by 14.75%.

Lovely stats there. This Private Vehicle growth stats shows how much we are lagging in the Public transportation and also gives how much of dependency we have created on fossil fuels. Covid can be one of the reason for this spike in Private Vehicle sales, but, not in its entirety.

Guess, the images under the tractor and PV data needs to be corrected/realigned respectively.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Sales figures continue to be strong in the C segment, chip shortage be damned. Goes to show that the Indian car buyer is willing to pay a premium for a quality ride. Unfortunately, the price hikes due to covid related supply constraints is going to stick around going forward. This whole ordeal has created a great excuse for every OEM in the supply chain to hike prices; and just like that the margins and bottom line have been padded. Yes, they will make a little less money this year due to chip shortages but the permanent price hike will ensure fat profits for years to come.

I also think it is time the government does away with the sub 4m rule and sets tax brackets based solely on price of the vehicle. Forcing manufacturers to redesign cars for the Indian market is not helping anybody. It is expensive and time consuming for the manufacturers and the customers get a hack job of a product.

The sub 4m rule disproportionately helps entrenched lazy players like Maruti. It stifles competition and prevents innovation. With electric vehicles, innovation will be the name of the game and rules such as these are unfair and create artificial handicap. The govt. should at least strike out all such silly rules for the EV segment.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

The top losers , especially of maruti can probably attributed to semiconductor shortage.

I am guessing that maruti is prioritizing production of models with higher profits.

Hoping that the Amazing performance of the Honda Amaze is not blunted in the coming months due to the very optimistic price hike.

The Creta shipments are more than the entire Honda portfolio. And Honda is mulling the decision to bring a CSUV in 2023...

Honda top mgmt, if you are reading this...

Please plonk 1.5 l SOHC Ivtec to WRV and also introduce CVT. And please price it reasonably. (Without breaching the S Cross price range ie 8 to 12 lacs ex showroom)

Bring back facelifted BR-V with a reasonable price tag (obviously less than Alcazar and preferably at par or slightly more than XL6 ie 10 to 15 lacs ex showroom). There is a space in the MUV segment for you

And most importantly, the competitor for Creta/Seltos/Taigun/Kushaq and price it competitively (ie 10 to 15 lacs ex showroom). You can easily modify any of the products in your international lineup and plonk the 1.5 IVTEC.This should hit India by April 2022 and not 2023

And , yes you might cannibalize models internally... But that's better than the competitor taking away your customer

Chip shortage or not, this month has created history. SUVs have overtaken Hatches.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I'm wondering where Maruti can go from here with just the following:
  • Diesel BS6 that has been in the works for a while
  • A better AT gearbox for the Petrol and a Diesel AT option for the Brezza & S-Cross (not even mentioning the Vitara or the Jimny)
  • An option with 6 Airbags, ESP & TCS for the cars above.

On a sidenote:
  • Honda will do well to rename itself Honda Amaze and City India.
  • Ford continues to miss opportunities to expand and consolidate, despite rolling out one fantastic car after the other, for years together
  • VW-Skoda have to do considerably better for their renewed strategy to succeed
  • With Maruti, the Korean twins, and Indian cousins eating up over 80% share, I wonder what the incentive for the likes of Citroen really is?!

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Can we also have a Aug 2019 M-o-M or for next month Sep 19 compared to Sep 20 and Sep 21. 2020 itself was an outlier post March so would be a better comparison if Aug 21 was better than Aug 19.

With the chip shortage all numbers are anyway erratic but the Nexon is the star here. Sonet / Venue wait periods could also be pushing some people to other brands.

Slightly OT here, but with the ever changing dynamics of the Indian (and global) auto market, it seems to be difficult to establish patterns over 12 month interval cycles i.e. Aug-21 vs Aug-20 vs Aug-19. There are different cars/OEMS, different technologies, different regulations being applied through the intervening 12 month period.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Brezza leading the C2 segment despite offering minimum features and being the oldest design in the market is a testament to MS's assessment of customer needs. Just shows that if they address the safety aspect of their cars they can be virtually unbeatable.

I hope the next gen Baleno is better and more solidly built. Would make a pretty all rounded product.

City selling > 3000 units makes me happy, glad to know that there are still people around who prefer a sedan over these pseudo SUVs

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Small but noticeable growth in the sales of Nissan Kicks. In June, the company sold 84 units which increased to 135 in July and now 186 in August. Wonder if the discounts are helping the company to sell more Kicks or if the Magnite unavailability has changed the minds of few buyers out there.

Speaking of the Magnite and its twin Kiger, Nissan and Renault have again dropped into the 2000s unit sales. In the previous month, Nissan sold over 4000 units while Renault sold over 3500 Kigers, so we now have a drop of 25% and I believe this is due to semi conductor shortage? If this is the maximum output they can do, guess, Nissan Magnite buyers could be looking at even longer waiting period.

Re: August 2021 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Is it possible to share the EV sales figures as well in these reports? I feel it will provide a good perspective on EV market.

I personally feel that this tech is in the cusp of taking off.
