re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

The black cladding looks are highly subjective and related to the car in question. They may or may not look good. But in the bumper to bumper, maniac Indian traffic, these claddings do help in preventing lotsbof scratches and scrubs. And being reasonably priced, it is easy to replace as well as easy on pocket to replace a broken cladding rather than repairing or removing a dent and subsequent painting time and effort.
Only thing is you need to keep a bottle of bumper polish or any other sort of polish to keep them black. Otherwise, in our dusty terrains, the black turns to gray within couple of days.

For those claddings which have not aged well and cannot be restored to its original colour and shine by polish, I suggest painting it DIY.

A can of Black paint costing 180-200 INR works wonders. Just clean the part with water, let it dry, mask the neighbouring areas with a masking tape and paper, use the can spray and viola you have a brand new cladding. The black paint can be a matte black or a high gloss one depending on your cladding surface texture.

So those who are worried about colour fading on cladding, its not a costly affair to restore the colour back.

I like it in general but it doesn't look good on everything as a rule.

The angular cladding all over on 2022 WRX is egregious, unnecessary and just over the top in some places, like the rear end.

One Indian car that carried cladding so well in my opinion was the Duster AWD.

Nope, can't stand it at all.

Call it living dangerously, but I don't even get those thin door protector strips.

re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

Sure. It adds some character lines and breaks the visual mass. And it has practical advantages too.
However, neither of my 2 cars have the cladding. Aftermarket options seem overpriced for what's essentially a piece of plastic. Moreover, I have to buy a set to match if one of them doesn't stick well and falls off because of poor installation on my part.

Love the ones on my Nexon. It adds character to a bulbous car. More so easier to maintain than paint. A bit of scratches look bad on paint but OK on the cladding.

re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

Though looks are subjective but in a country like ours, where any Tom Dick and Harry can get a license to drive without any training, and no one following any rules, it’s more of functional. A scratch or two on the cladding won’t look ugly, while a scratch on painted part looks really bad Also scratches on metal parts needs to be repaired/ repainted at the earliest, not just for aesthetic reasons, but also to prevent corrosion. It takes just a couple of mins to change the cladding, but repairing is at-least a full day process even if one is not claiming insurance.

re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

Manufacturers use cladding mostly for looks and it is a cost effective method of doing so to differentiate the products especially in mass market cars. Maintenance is of course easy on black cladding as compared to other painted ones, if it looks good on the product i have no issues else it is better to go without cladding...

Definitely didn't want to have them in mine. But do we have a choice? My concern apart from fading was possible rattles with time since they are just clip on plastic parts.

re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

Earlier I used to drive in fear of Rickshaw-wallas and Auto-wallas. Not any more.
With ample black claddings on my EcoSport, no one messes with it. Even if they do, I simply "brush it off".

re: Black plastic cladding in modern cars | Love it or hate it?

I don't mind having it on SUV's like the ones on my Ecosport and Creta but don't prefer it on hatchbacks or sedans. Talking about SUV's or CSUV's, I didn't like the side cladding on the Tata Punch though.

My Swift had this but painted it white. It looked weird when I added wider tires and side skirt. Spoiled the clean look.

OT:
That Thar looks like a wannabe G-Wagen. All that white doesn't go very well with the vehicle. Any pics of the front available with you?
