Indian vehicle exports up 62% in April-November 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic, global chip shortage and rising commodity prices have wreaked havoc in the auto sector. While domestic sales have dwindled, the export business has flourished.

According to a media report, vehicle exports from India increased to 36,91,583 units in April-Nov 2021 from 22,77,990 units during the same period last year.

Passenger vehicle exports grew by 58% to 3,68,605 units, while 2-wheeler exports stood at 29,79,952 units - a YoY growth of 64%. 3-wheeler exports rose by 47% to 3,43,139 units in the same period. Quadricycle exports stood at 3,887 units.

Maruti Suzuki was the top exporter with 1,45,906 units, followed by Hyundai (83,438 units) and Kia (30,738 units).

53% increase in exports for Hyundai! Can it be the reason behind insanely high waiting time for Creta? I have seen my colleagues waiting for above 5 months after booking Cretas.
Obviously margins should be higher for each unit of PV exported as compared to domestic sales. Since chips are in short supply, manufacturers might be giving priority to export orders to optimise their margins.
