March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Wow, nice to see 2 TATAs in top 10. A couple of years back who would have thought? Altroz should see better numbers next month onwards now that the DCA is here. TATAs portfolio looks good now with no real flop. Even the Tigor seems to be doing decent after the EV introduction. Overall almost in sniffing distance of Hyundai for that No.2 spot

Any specific reason for sudden shoot in scorpio numbers? 6k+

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

While the Nexon and Punch numbers are truly impressive an unsung turn around story in the Tata model line up is the Tigor. Since the launch of the improved electric version, Tigor sales have more than doubled! Well done.

In the meanwhile it's disappointing reading forum member CLS55_AMG's Nexon EV buying experience. Tata must focus on backing great products with even better sales and service experience.
As the saying goes, 'It's not rocket science is it?' Getting this right will only help strengthen Tata's resurgence in the Indian market.

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Citroen who? I mean literally these guys are constantly selling around 50 cars per month. This is what happens when you misunderstand a market. Take a leaf out of Kia's books.
Skoda has a turn around story, Slavia is indeed reigniting the interest in sedan segment. I know a few people in my close circle including my dad who are thinking of the Slavia.
Volkswagen Virtus will write the turnaround story? lets wait and watch. Bye bye Polo, I always wished of owning you but I think it will not happen in the near future.
Nissan is this the best you can do? always a one car company, Nissan should have been aggressive after fair acceptance of Magnite (will not call it a success as it hardly sells 3k units), they should have launched at least 2 more cars, one in the SUV segment and one probably in the MUV.
Maruti will hover around the 40% market share mark in the future. Maruti does not have anything VFM to offer save for the hatchback segments. Maruti had one USP 'UFM sale and service cost', but now they have lost that too. Their service cost are not pocket friendly.
Toyota selling almost 8k Innova's and 3k fortuners wow! The Glanza and Urban Cruiser are keeping the cash books constantly in positive. Is there room for one more SUV from the T badge?
Honda as usual bearing the fruit of procrastinating. Mediocre at its best. Honda with its current lineup is in a 'neither here nor there' kind of situation.
Kia is hitting goldmine with every product. In the very longish term wont be surprised if Kia market share surpasses Hyundai, as Kia is on an incline with just 4 products and Hyundai is on a decline with 11 products.
Hyundai, is 40k cars per month a new normal? I remember 60K cars per month few years ago, in fact in the last FY Hyundai could never breach the 50K/month mark.
Renault can surely do better, surprised at the numbers Kwid is doing it used to sell almost 8k units a month some years ago, A generation change overdue? maybe yes. Just when the SUV segment is boiling you have kept the new gen Duster out of Indian market, this is strange.
Datsun looks finally dead with zero dispatches of Redigo, good. This sub brand did not have a place and a reason to exist in India.
Tata is the star kid here best month, best quarter, Best EV sales, Best in SUV segment. Tigor suddenly gets a rebirth with the CNG and EV avatar. Punch is literally punching it. Nexon is creating a strong name for Tata not only in terms of sales but also reliability and product satisfaction. I am yet to sit in a Nexon which has rattles. Harrier-Safari twins gaining momentum, they have created a fan following of its own, just like fortuners.
MG is doing the right things and their gradual slow but steady growth is a testimony to it.
Jeep still hovers 1k units, people really do not trust their service. FCA is like that one spoilt kid who doesn't intend to correct itself and improve no matter how many times you reprimand it.
Mahindra is another star of the show. So the story for Alturas G4 is not over yet? Finally the numbers of XUV700 makes sense, Mahindra with its modern lineup looks promising. So the numbers of Bolero Neo is clubbed with regular Bolero? What's up with Scorpio 6k units surge?

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Is DatSun gone for good from Indian market? There are no dispatches in March.

I think, Tata Punch as SUV is majorly contributing to the SUV share over Hatch in the body style graph.

Wondering why the Sonet & Carens are classified under the Utility segment.

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Saddening to see a brand like Honda constantly struggling for Market share. Coming from a family with 2 Honda cars (Jazz and City) in the garage, I am really rooting for a turnaround for them. I honestly feel Jazz could have done so much better in the market being such a practical and spacious car.

Honda perhaps missed the trick in the CSUV and SUV segment. WRV should have been proactively updated with a more appealing design and a powerful engine like Nexon/Brezzza. And I also don't understand why they didn't launch a true Creta competitor and kept on trying their luck with MPVs like Mobilio and BRV. Had been hearing about HRV for years but it never made it here. Kia Sonet and Seltos came out of nowhere and Honda just kept looking like a sloth. Rest is history.

I genuinely hope they do not end up like Ford in the coming years. Fingers crossed for City HEV.

Re: March 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A few years back, who would have ever thought

- The best selling non-Maruti car in India would be a TATA = NEXON
- In the premium hatch back segment TATA would give Hyundai i20 a run for the money, month over month = ALTROZ
- A brand new TATA car will give the Grand i10 a tough competition = PUNCH
- A compact sedan from TATA that will beat the Hyundai twins XCENT & AURA hands down = TIGOR

Way to go TATA ! Hyundai needs to do something very quickly to hold on to No.2. With Altroz DCT and the longer range Nexon EV, TATA is posing serious threat to Hyundai.
