Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

My Mahindra TUV 300 which is in extended warranty went into limp mode on the highway earlier this year (Odo was at 32,000 Km) since the Mahindra service center rep had missed to change the engine air filter at 30,000 Km. They billed me for it, but didn't actually change the part.

The car was being driven from Trichy to Chennai when it began behaving like a wheezing truck with a 50 tonne payload. A roadside mechanic near the Ulunderpet toll plaza diagnozed it, changed the filter and then re-set the MAF sensor. After that the car ran like a dream on the drive back to home.

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Manufacturer: Hyundai
Model/trim: i20, Sportz
Purchase Year: 2019
Duration of your warranty / extended warranty: 3 + 1 (extended)
Fuel Type/Transmission/Gearing: Petrol, Manual
Kilometres done: 30700 KM
Your delightful experience or your breakdown sob story: Had a clutch master cylinder failure with just 8100 KM on the ODO. It was heartbreaking to have the first breakdown this early in the ownership. When we had resumed using the car after about 2 months of 2020 lock-down, the clutch used to harden after a few hours of usage. I had taken it to the service center but they were unable to provide a fix at the time since the issue used to show up only after a few hours of usage. They advised me to just let the car cool down if things got worse and then drive to the nearest service center. During the 2020 Diwali season, the car had remained unused for another month which had made things worse. Come December, one fine evening the clutch started hardening up. Before I could understand what was happening, it got stuck half way depressed. When I tried to wiggle it free, it simply gave in and the pedal went to the floor. This was when I was stationary at a busy signal. Somehow managed to push it to the side of the road and had to wait for about 2 hours before a tow-truck finally showed up. Luckily for me, it had broken down in Bangalore, hardly 3 kms from my place and the nearest service center was just 2 kms away. Advaith Hyundai Indiranagar took 3 days to replace the master cylinder and things have been normal since then.

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Voted 'None' for 2014 Safari Storme VX 4*4 and 2016 Tiago XZ Petrol as none of them suffered any major breakdowns or left us stranded midway ever.

For the Safari, the only issues and subsequent replacements that I faced during the extended Warranty period were replacement of headlamp unit (i think Twice, one for each side) primarily because the service centre could never get the alignment right and would simply go ahead and change it under warranty. The other thing that was repeatedly replaced was the ORVM units on account of noise they were making while closing and opening. Otherwise at least during the first 4 years no other major breakdowns. It's now at the 8 year mark that it has started showing age and twice in the last 6 months almost left us stranded. The first instance was when we had just started for Alibag from Navi Mumbai and noticed parking brake light on even though the brake was not engaged. In some time started feeling a loss of braking and pulled over at Panvel. Culprit was the rear brake line rupture due to rusting. Left it at the service centre, rented a Zoomcar and went ahead with out trip. The second time was when during a drive to Gokarna last month from Navi Mumbai, the ABS light popped up. Called up my FNG guy and confirmed that the brakes are working fine and got a go ahead to continue with the trip. Sent it to the service centre after about a month yesterday and got a confirmation from the TASS that one of the ABS sensors needs replacement.

For the Tiago, it was with us for about 8 months before it went to my parents but looking at the service history on the TAMO Service app apart from brake pad replacement at 20600 Kms, fuel pump module and injector cleaning everything else seems to be regular servicing.

Cheers,
M

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Voted None. And a very useful thread : would love to see a detailed statistics later.

Honda Civic, entered 15th year. No breakdowns or any major issues yet. A minor power steering oil leak (appeared way after warranty period), SA suggested to fill the oil once a while instead of spending 80K+ changing the column.

BMW M340i : with all apprehensions took maximum extended warranty (six years - the sixth year along costs a bomb). Finishing an year, no troubles. Fingers crossed 🤞

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

I have a Hexa XT 2019 model and it never stranded us in middle of the road. But it has major gear box issue where 5th gear went kaput while car was running. 5th gear used to slot in its position but remained in neutral condition. I have narrated this issue in separate thread. Issue was resolved under warranty.

Manufacturer: Hyundai
Model/trim: i10 1.2 Kappa2 VTVT Asta
Purchase Year: 2011
Duration of your warranty / extended warranty: 2 years
Fuel Type/Transmission/Gearing: Petrol/MT
Kilometres done: Nearly 70,000 Kms

My i10 has never stranded me in the last 11 years. There is no warranty claim or any major repairs and is in stock condition. It was routinely serviced in HASS only for first two years and with FNG after that. Till 10 years, the experience was really good with just change of battery/tyres apart from left rear power window switch/few bulbs (It's a Hyundai thing) but in the last one year multiple failures - AC, rusted silencer and head unit LCD failure.

There is another i10 1.1L in the family and it is also exactly the same. No major issues except for AC and rusted silencer. It does not have head unit or rear power windows, so no failures there

My other car is Kushaq 1.0 MT which is just 4 months old and experience is good so far. Hope it stays the same despite reading horror stories every other day about VAG.

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Never had a breakdown with 2011 swift or 2012 WagonR. However, the pre-worshiped 2001 Alto that I used earlier stalled on the road, not due to its fault, but because the "dealer workshop" did not change the engine oil and I foolishly did not check the oil quality after service. Believing the omnipresent dealer, unsuspectingly, I ran 15000 km with the same oil. The engine said, enough is enough. Almost three months in the worshop with major heart work. Thereafter, it was a total mess and I sold it off.

Manufacturer: Tata
Model/trim: Diesel XZA +
Purchase Year: 2018
Duration of your warranty / extended warranty: 4 years
Fuel Type/Transmission/Gearing: Diesel, AMT
Kilometres done: 50000
Your delightful experience or your breakdown sob story:

Only once.. the clutch on my AMT gave away in the middle of peak traffic near Sarjapur Road , Hosur Road junction , 1 km away from Koramangala forum. The car wouldn’t budge and we had to get a tow truck to Carry to service Center. The clutch was replaced free of cost (P2P), but left us stranded. Wish there was a way to diagnose worn out clutch in AMT.

Volkswagen
Polo Highline 1.2 MPI
Petrol and Manual Transmission
2014 year
44000 kilometers covered

No problem has occurred so far thankfully, not even a tyre puncture. Most of the distance has been covered on the highways and to my village home with very bad or no roads at all.

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Current 2 cars in the Garage
2016 Honda City Vtec V Manual - 59876kms
2017 Hyundai i20 Petrol Magna Manual- 30567kms
Honda is a gem of a car no issues till date.
Hyundai on the other hand has clutch replaced 3 times
Gearbox replaced 1 time
AC evaporator coil 1 time
All during warranty and clutch replaced twice and gearbox once during the pandemic. Reason given by Hyundai car has had less running.
It was a Bravo moment as city had completed 4000kms in 2020 to 2021 end while i20 had completed 10000odd kms in 2020 to 2021 time.

Re: Did your car break down during the warranty / extended warranty period?

Our current car, the W205 C class (C220 CDI) had to undergo suspension replacement under warranty in 2018, 34 months after its purchase. The 2 main culprits along with my brother were as follows:

1) Smallest of pothole on Mumbai Pune expressway while returning to Nashik from Imagica. The car was doing high speeds during this incident.

2) Cornering at high speeds in Kasara ghats during monsoon when ESP stepped in to counteract the skidding movements of the vehicle.

Indisch Motoren Nashik (now Silver-Star Mercedes) was very professional in taking care of things. No extra charge whatsoever.

P.S.: My brother is now a more responsible driver ever since he became a father. He keeps telling me he has it under control but at such speeds you are at the mercy of others. Apologies for getting carried away by empty stretches sometimes. I bet many of you do it.

Last edited by libranof1987 : 11th June 2022 at 13:20. Reason: Removing mentions of illegal speeds.

Aria pride 2010

For my Aria Pride 2010 AWD. First unit delivered in it's spec.

I had to make 25 visits to the service centre over the first 2 years and 65000kms for a total of 72 inactive days. (10% of the time)

Major failures were:
1) Gearbox replacement that left me stranded during a Tata arranged Konkan trip. They did give me a replacement vehicle to continue trip and arrange repairs though.

2) Brake failure (Just close to my house) Just managed to drive it home.

3) DMF replacement. It did not leave me stranded though.

Other major parts covered in warranty was multiple repaints of bonnet, bumpers, door handles due to pain peeling, tyre change. Driver seat replacement, indicator stalk replacement etc.. Tata recognised that it was a lemon and refunded me the entire amount of the car back excluding taxes. Won't happen again though so folks don't bother trying. It was a lovely vehicle, but the reliability was poor. My friends 2018 Hexa too had major issues but was stranded lesser number of days. Yet I would buy a Preowned Hexa even today.

I had a ton of failures with the Tata Safari TCIC too but most were post warranty on the way to 175000 kms.

Skoda Laura 1.9pd L&K needed AC compressor, Gear lever switch, Turbo, Turbo pipes, Head Unit etc. Replaced under warranty. Had to drive straight to service centre with turbo pipe issue and AT issue.

BMW X3 30D with its 6 year warranty had breakdown for ABS sensors, Coolant leakage, and multiple non breakdown repairs, but all this was in years 5 & 6.
