Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

For me, the most exciting piece of info here is this. The XUV7OO edging closer to the Innova!

Hot and happening premium segment, undisputed leader from a legendary automaker ruling the roost, in comes an Indian manufacturer living up to the challenge. Mind you, if the ScorpioN numbers are also added, Mahindra finally takes the cake in the D1 segment. Well done Mahindra! Well done

Its low fuel efficiency, waiting period and 'Chinese' tag could be the reasons. We were considering the Astor to replace our Verna, but the long waiting period and low FE put us off. Negative feedback on after-sales service didn't help either. Eventually we purchased the Honda City.

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti slowly coming back to normal. Soon we will see market share close to 50% once production constrains are gone and new models are in market. New Alto surely bring them large numbers.

Hyundai rocks in SUV segment, Creta and Venue doing extremely good for them.

Great month for Tata. They are very close to Hyundai for number 2 spot. Punch has given them great numbers. Harrier doing extremely good for them along with Nexon, Tiago, Altroz.

What's wrong with Nissan and Renault? If they have huge demand for Maginite and Kiger, why are not they delivering? Numbers are quite low, specially for Nissan.

Skoda doing Skoda thing, not too good not too bad. VW clearly struggling. Virtus is not welcomed well in the market, hardly 5 k sell in 3 months is nothing. Taigun is also below 1.5K.

Toyota doing what they do always, happy in selling mainly Innova and Fortuner. Maruti giving them good numbers and keeping showrooms busy.

Mahindra also had a great month like Tata. Hope they will solve their delivery problems soon and deliver more XUV700, Thar and Scorpion.

VW is struggling to get systems embedded into their cars, I have prebooked Virtus GT before launch and still waiting for its delivery. Recent news from Autocar mentions same thing:

VW is not able to source the 10-inch touchscreens and digital instrument clusters for their cars (3:18). The brand director said that demand is very much there for the Virtus and Taigun (3:52) but they are facing a lot of component shortages!
NOTE- 3:18 and 3:52 are the respective timelines in the video where he talked about the above mentioned topics.

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Tata is breathing down Hyundai’s neck thanks to the success of Punch. If only the Safari could have performed as much as the Harrier if not more they would be the No 2 car maker in India by now.

For Mahindra the XUV300 is a sleeper hit. It does consistent numbers every month without a facelift or an upgrade in over 3 years. its turning out to be their bread and butter after the Bolero.

Nissan Magnite is doing good numbers. It has penetrated the mass market as I see a few Driving Schools using the magnate, which was a Maruti bastion previously. True success of a budget car is this when driving schools put their trust on a car!

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Kushaq - 2064
Taigun - 1408
Total - 3472

Slavia - 1895
Virtus - 1338
Total - 3233

Grand Total of the relatively high-volume models for VAG - 6705

Toyota Innova (Overpriced with a large number of good 3-row options cropping up) - 6900

What can be the possible reasons for such low numbers?
1. Chip Shortage - I just don't buy this as a valid excuse. Chip shortage has been going on for a couple of years now and one would assume VAG would have done decent planning for their 2.0 strategy to sell at least 2k units per model. If the chip-shortage is indeed the real reason for these low numbers then its a big strategic failure for the group. If you can't cash in on the initial hype of product launches, how can you expect demand to pick up with so many good options launching every 2 months?

2. Lack of trust in the Brand - With the initial reliability and AC performance issues, the group has actually managed to decrease the trust levels. All 4 are genuinely good products but the multiple issues have made customers either wait for a few months before buying these or are moving to other alternatives

3. Focus on Exports - I had read a couple of articles where it mentions that they are focusing more on exporting these models rather than selling them here. May be they just want to stay relevant in the Indian market so that when the demand skyrockets they are relatively prepared

VAG and Honda are 2 big international brands which are quite vital for the Indian market to provide genuinely distinct products for the masses IMO. But both the brands are shooting themselves in the foot with their strategies.

Tata can compete much better if they bring in 4cylinder refined engines to match the look of the body, it seems from several reviews that their cars look aggressive but it doesn't concur with the engine response.

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few observations which I could frame from this data:
1. WagonR has been the top most selling model for last few months. Absence of Alto might have contributed to this. But we still cannot ignore the boot space available in this model. For a mileage concerned urban user this is a great option in this price range. It will be interesting to see how Alto impacts the sales volumes in coming months. But one thing is for sure that MS is poised to regain around 50% market share in coming months.
2. Kudos to TML for being a close 3rd in last few months. Things could have been more interesting if Harrier’s performance improved challenging Creta and Seltos.
3. M&M is consistently pitching for 4th place. If they have one CSUV offering in 13L - 20L bracket in sub 4.4M segment then things would become more challenging for others.
4. The MPV segment has been ignored by M&M. They should bring back the focus on Marazzo by providing a face lift, AT version and some more safety features. It can throw a real challenge to others.
5. One point which TML and M&M should focus now is on scaling up the service center capacity to provide a good service experience and support to the increased sales numbers.
6. Nissan and Honda have become dependent on their current best selling models Magnite and City. Maybe they are not in the volume game and are contained with the current figures.

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I have been a regular reader of the monthly sales figures at TeamBHP. Great work!

There is one question that I have always had. Are these numbers representative of what Indian are buying OR are these numbers representative of the production caps (limits) for each model by their manufacturers?

I feel its the latter. Its feels too much of a co-incidence that Indians across the country cause sale of ~3K Honda City or ~3K Fortuners consistently

Yes, these production numbers are constrained by manufacturing as well as supply chain capacity. Toyota can produce around 10000 Innova and Fortuner combined in a month as that's the plant capacity. That's why you see 4-6k Innova and rest Fortuner. Mahindra would like to produce 10k+ XUV700 due to high demand but they are constrained by their plant capacity as well as supply chain.

Most people in this forum analyse these numbers wrongly. The point is to look at medium and long term trend. Looking at 1 or 2 months of numbers and deciding whether demand of a particular car is going up or down is plain stupid. For ex., long term trend of Innova shows 4-6k consistently and that shows demand is intact for quite sometime. Some cars show good production numbers for the first 2-3 years and then it goes downhill as demand fades away when competition catches up.

Re: July 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

July 2022 Highlights for India Car Sales

1. Maruti back in the 40+% market share after plummeting into the 30s last month. Thanks to the resurrection of the S-Presso which came back with a new engine selling 11268 which is a lifetime high
2. The 341k cars sold in July 2022 is the HIGHEST ever monthly sales in India's car sales history!
3. The sales so far this year is a whopping 2.16 million which is so far the highest we have achieved in the first 7 months of any year so far. We are on target to create a new sales record this year in 2022
4. In all probability Tata will sell by August more cars than it sold in all of 2021. Its gap with Hyundai will be less than 30k cars over the year if the current average monthly rates are maintained by both these OEMs. Will Tatas beat Hyundai this year or will it be the next? Fingers Crossed!
5. In the SUV segment overall Tatas still rank No 1. Will the Mahindras beat them there? Tough game as it's not just the large SUV segment comprising the types of XUV7OO and Scorpio-N where Mahindra has already beaten Tata's Harrier/Safari twins but also the Nexon segment where the XUV3OO is no competition.

It seems like Meridian has eaten into Compass's sales. Most of Meridian customers seem to be choosing it over Compass rather than Fortuner which is selling 3000 units a month! And despite that Jeep keeps on increasing price every few months and QC is non-existant with two recent incidents of brand new cars breaking down within days after delivery.

It's not just Tata who have increased dispatches. Even Hyundai has from the previous month. Hence it's not so easy to Tata to reach position 2 especially when Hyundai has Creta, Sonet, i20 in order backlog.
