Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda Amaze's month on month sales variation is like a seesaw graph. Is this due to lumpy production ? Similar is the story for XUV300.

VW and Skoda need to realize "bare-metal strength" is not enough to sell; needs to have functional (working) features aligned to Indian conditions. Hope they learn.

Looks Hyundai and Kia are happy with 3:2 sales ratio for Creta/Seltos and Venue/Sonet. Admire their market understanding.

For products like C3, 50%-60% of demand comes from tier-2 & tier-3 cities/towns. If Citroen still doesn’t have a presence yet, then their network development department is either inexperienced or incompetent or both.

Mahindra has started reporting Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic (now) volumes under one head. Similarly, the erstwhile TUV 300, now called Bolero Neo, is clubbed with the regular Bolero.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Couple of observations -

Mahindra - 7oo is king of the road and of the salesroom. Thar is losing sheen already? Would be interesting to see how Scorpio numbers play out.

Maruti - as always, glad to see the humble Ignis pull in 5k+ numbers. It is the most underrated VFM car at the moment. Grab it before the inevitable face-lift price hike. Newer cars performing as expected.

Hyundai - noone seems to be noticing the steady numbers by the Aura! Fleets purchasing a VFM sedan, probably.

Tata - No amount of paint jobs is going to hide the fact that Harrier twins need a mid life upgrade! 3k combined numbers is not good.

VW - an enthusiast brand not offering a manual in the top spec of its flagship sedan has probably blunted the enthusiasm people had for it. Slavia is the clear winner vs Virtus.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Slavia/Virtus has not made any dent in the sales of Honda City, their prime competitor. Yet both have sold about 4k per month. So it looks like the people who were otherwise not looking at the sedan segment (City/Verna) have brought Slavia/Virtus thus expanding the sedan market in India. Both of them have revived the sedan segment but how long will it last remains to be seen.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Compass selling below 1000 copies/month and Compass:Meridian settling at 2:1 ratio. With sub-4m suv almost dead and no hopes of Renegade launch, Jeep might have reached a product dead end.

Absolutely agree Most car companies start with dealerships in major cities first, and then expand into tier 2/3/4. And the more you expand into non core markets, the average per dealership will only reduce, like your Hyundai data shows. You can always be super focused on the tier 1 cities too, but all India expansion is so crucial to establish brand confidence. I would be more confident to venture out in a car that has support in any destination that i would plan for. For example, I know of so many people who chose note to buy a Compass because dealership service and support were just not present in their cities. That strategy may still work for a more targeted brand like Jeep. but not for a mass market player.

Not sure whether incompetence or inexperience cuts it. I would go a step further and say am not sure whether Citroen is still confident of a long term India presence. Hence no focus on dealership expansion, no roadmap on future mass market products, and of course under-equipping an otherwise good car. And if they are just slow in decisioning, then that's not good too. The next 12 months will be make or break for this brand i feel

Genuinely concerned for Citroen now. Their mass market car selling less than 1000 units a month, just a month after launch, does not look good for the future of the company.

Nice to see the likes of Kia Carens , Hyundai Alcazar, Maruti Ignis doing consistently reasonably well giving the cabin space and practicality of these cars in their respective segments.

Citroen C3 automatic is to be launched in the next few months. That should increase the monthly numbers for Citroen!

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Still remember a post some time back about Mahindra, which I posted. I simply lost hope on them, I posted, as they did not have one good modern product at that time. They were selling decade old models like Scorpio, Bolero etc. and XUV5OO barely surviving. But now, their range looks very healthy. I wish Marazzo get a 2.2 liter diesel as in the Thar or Scorpio and should give Innova some tough time. With Innova Diesel booking stopped, this should have helped M&M a lot. Marazzo is a capable and good looking vehicle.

Thar still maintaining around 3k levels even after the initial euphoria subsided. Scorpio is still unstoppable and will further go up only with the new updated version plus the Scorpio N. M&M might add another 6 to 8k to their tally soon with XUV 400 as well on board (with another 1k to 2k at least?). We can also expect some hit to Nexon EV (if priced sensibly). So good times ahead for M&M, only if they could focus on QC and production challenges. Still better than Tata, when it comes to durability and over all product quality, which is impressive. I will personally choose a Mahindra over Tata.

No wonder why VW India is struggling to produce cars.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Quite sad for Citroen. Great brand diluting itself with poor product planning.

Very absymal numbers for a mass market car like C3. What's in their pipeline next?

A very different perspective from individual dealership penetration level . To add a point to this analysis, The dealerships in big cities are in better position to push more cars as compared to a dealership in say tier3 city. Thus factory dispatch and retail sales from FADA are enough to hint the demand a particular model enjoys in the market.

Regarding the clubbing numbers of Scorpio classic and N together, i have no doubt. But although i have seen the dispatch happening recently from Mahindra Chakan plant there is no scoop or intel about spotting any ScorpioN near the dealerships anywhere thus i was curious if at all any Scorpio N is included in that number or not. One more factor of this suspicion is that the Scorpio Classic still have a lot of fan following and can easily garner this volume.

VW has been struggling in 3rd quarter from chip shortages. Less cars have got dispatched as there is shortage of digital cockpit and 10 inch system. Most likely we will some changes in their head unit. The numbers should reach normal levels of 3 to 3.5k combined sales from October onwards.

Re: August 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is a great achievement for Tata that it ranks 3rd in monthly dispatches and is constantly selling 45k+ cars per month, that too without catering to cab/fleet operators. Maruti, Hyundai and Mahindra all sell few models as taxis, Mahindra sells a lot of cars in the yellow plates, whereas Tata cars in yellow plates are almost nil now.
