re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

Interesting times of 2 Litre Hybrids rolling in.

Leaving the power figures apart, it will be quite a competition between Jeep Cherokee Hybrid and Toyota Hycross Hybrid. Perception game is on .

re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

Got a call from my Jeep AD and on asking about the engine spec landing in India, they mentioned 270KW and 400NMs. I was skeptical about that power figure and reconfirmed that its ‘KW’ and not ‘HP’ to which they assured that it is indeed KW.
My hunch is that they have some internal typo moving around and Cherokee has the exact same engine as Wrangler has. 268HP and 400NM.

Its bit disappointing seeing that pentastar V6 not landing here and we have a big bulky SUV running on a 4 pot mill
Exact same reason, Velar has been out of my radar since inception which is otherwise such a nice all rounder car.

Any ideas on India bound Hemi SRT variant?

Wasn’t the Grand Cherokee supposed to be launched today?

The Velar sold in India still has only 4 cylinders? Thought it was only during the BS6/covid confusion era that most Land Rovers were stuck with the 2.0l petrol and now except for the Disco Sport everything else has multiple engine/fuel options.

The previous gen Grand Cherokee had the SRT8 alongwith the V6 petrol and diesel. But this time not sure, as the Grand Cherokee is a CKD, not CBU. Maybe they will bring the SRT8 as a CBU at a shocker price to make the normal version seem VFM

re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

It's coming on the 15th; I won't be surprised if this thing is upwards of 80 Lac.

Jeep has had limited success with Compass/ Meridian, as they got some space where people wanted something premium, macho, and not a very large vehicle like Fortuner.

But the Wrangler is a very slow mover. I have a feeling that it will be the case with Cherokee too. With 4 cylinders and 268 bhp, it will be tough even if they load it with features. 60-65 lac would have been a different case, though.

I may stand pleasantly wrong with the above inference.

Going by the rumours, that turbo hybrid 4-pot has a lot of punch. Its the exact same Wrangler tuned engine plus 2 motors as per this auto data spec https://www.auto-data.net/en/jeep-gr...queflite-45014

Fun fact; this 4 pot has more Hp and more Nm values than 5.4v8.
I believe, this 2.5 ton behemoth will run rounds on its rivals if it indeed lands with this spec

Car and driver has reviewed this model earlier, it looks like a box ticking exercise by jeep to meet the phev demand. There is some savings if you are able to recharge and have a short commute.

re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

We are not getting the hybrid, just the regular 5-seater, though badged as "Limited" with four pots. Maybe a 48V system for start/ stop or occasional jump in power. So, in all likelihood, it's going to be the Wrangler engine.

Interiors and other features are lovely, including the passenger side entertainment, which will be exclusive to Jeep in this segment and above. The launch now seems to be on the 17th, as some dealers haven't got the cars yet.

It also gets cooled and heated seats. Fun fact, I could not even find an option to have a 4-Cylinder pot on Jeep US/ Canada or Australia. Maybe it's for emerging markets or brand-new for us

at One crore OTR, coupled with Jeep India/Stellantis' lackadaisical attitude, apathetic dealers, questionable quality control and atrocious resale of Jeep products, this one has Dead on Arrival written all over it. Heck, gimme a BMW x4 anyway over this!

Re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

Jeep basically thinks of themselves as a German competitor in India. Compass is now priced atrociously and lets not even talk about the Cherokee (Meridian is fine in my opinion). At 77.5L showroom, there is going to be a couple of takers a month or not even that.
Its all nice saying they are locally assembling if the prices don't reflect that at all.

So this will land at close to a crore in Bangalore. Sales stats will be super interesting to see.

Re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

I fail to understand why would they price it at this point despite assembling in India and touting "only country to get 5th Gen in RHD form" if they do not focus on capturing the market - at least in initial days. At this rate, as others pointed out, this will reduce to single or low double digits a month. How does that do justice to local manufacturing business case internally and how does that work for a flagship marquee model? Something really wrong with their India management thought process.

Re: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee caught testing in India. Edit: Launched at 77.5 lakhs

The idea is sell a few at high margins in india WHILE re-exporting to right hand drive markets like Japan, Australia, South Africa etc where sales volumes for this nameplate ("Grand Cherokee") will be much higher than India. The US$ strength versus especially the yen and the aussie$ is a curse for Ford, GM and exFCA and has been for years.

CKD assembly in India helps with margins on re-exports, while boosting sustainable profitability somewhat for Stellantis andor its dealers in India.

GM and Ford have left India, and are by now residual even in RHD Australia and Japan. India as (re)export RHD hub is designed to avoid that fate for JEEP, given the pre existing Tata FIAT jv plant at Ranjangaon. Stellantis is vacating China, instead!

Makes financial sense i think.

The Indian market needs a mass market model like the JEEP Avenger bev (twinned with the Citroen C3), instead. For sales volumes if not for profits?!
