September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

- Rural India in states like HP, HR, UK, UP and JH showed weakness with lower contribution to Auto Retail especially in entry level 2W and PV category.

- While overall retail in PV will be at a decade high during this festive season, it is the 2W category where Auto Industry continues to pin its hope for showing healthy growth.

- Average inventory for PV ranges from 40-45 days

- Average inventory for 2W ranges from 45-50 days

Re: September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

TATA is sniffing down the throat of Hyundai and Tiago.EV mostly will fill that gap looking at the booking numbers. What a turnaround story really. The manufacturer who was almost written off half a decade ago is a household name now in 5-20L category.

Mind blowing numbers for scorpio, am sure it combines both Scorpio-N & classic. What a cult this nameplate has been for mahindra along with the good old bolero which doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. If Mahindra ramps up their production fast enough am sure all their offerings would mostly see 5 digit sales MoM and they too can come very close to Hyundai/Tata.

Renault seems to be happy with all its offerings doing 2-3k numbers. Please get the legendary Duster back with improved interiors. That car literally created the segment which has become bread and butter for the koreans (CSUV).

Nissan Magnite is doing ok but am not sure how long they can continue selling only 1 car. They along with Renault should be getting the creta/Seltos challenger ASAP.

Is maruti brand name being prioritised over toyota when it comes to Hyryder/Grand-Vitara? Maruti has 4 times the numbers. Or is it because maruti has way more showrooms, so these are the display/test-ride cars as per footprint across the country?

Honda’s show makes me worried being an owner of their car. In a country obsessed with crossovers they are selling only sedans. When will they wake up

With recession looming in would be interesting to see how the upcoming months pan out. October should be good thanks to festive season but subsequent months can get a little slow if the global economic pressure makes its presence felt here.

Re: September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Vehicle retail sales up by 11% in September 2022

According to the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle retail sales went up by 11% in September 2022, compared to the same month last year.

September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-1.jpg

Overall sales for the month of September 2022 stood at 14,64,001 units, compared to 13,19,647 units in September 2021. Compared to September 2019, when 15,21,893 units were sold, total vehicle retails have dropped by 3.80%.

September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-2.jpg

The passenger vehicle segment continued to show growth. Better availability of semi-conductors, new launches, and feature rich products are said to have attracted customers to dealerships this festive season. The waiting period, though, still continues to range between 3-24 months, especially for SUVs and compact SUVs.

September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-3.jpg

Tractor sales dropped by 1.49%, from 53,392 units in September 2021 to 52,595 units.
Two-wheeler sales increased by 9.02% to 10,15,702 units from 9,31,654 units in September 2021.

September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-5.jpg

Three-wheeler sales were up by 71.94% in September 2022. 63,915 units were sold, compared to 37,172 units in September 2021.

September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-6.jpg

Passenger vehicle sales went up by 9.71% compared to the previous year. 2,60,556 units were sold last month, compared to 2,37,502 units in September 2021.
Commercial vehicle sales also increased by 18.87%. 71,233 units were sold in September 2022, compared to 59,927 units in the previous year.

Tata needs to fix its service if it wants to compete with Hyundai as the cars are selling, but you need the owners to recommend it to their friends and family. Too many complaints coming out in their premium offerings which cannot be ignored.

Why is scorpio not split between classic and N? Also says a lot of the amount of catch up one needs to do with Maruti as they have more then 5 cars selling more then 10k a month and Mahindra has none!

Re: September 2022 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Whats with the number of Virtus and Slavia!
One has doubled its sale vs other had reduced by half

Interestingly, their combined number is consistently around 3000 units a month
Is it the max production capacity?
And if so, last month priority was given to volkswagen? or is it time for Skoda to bring out a cosmetic job on Slavia?

Kenny Sebastian has uploaded this fun take on the current Indian car scene. Didn't know the guy was an enthusiast! Or maybe he's just gone through these recent threads. Hmm...

Some initially thought it was simple lack of demand for the respective models but its been swinging, I think it might still be that chips supply/allotment might still be an issue effecting Skoda/VW more than others.

Basically they seem to come out of the same line or at least very closely linked but with some stages different. And depending on their supply chain situation they decide which model to push in the line. Kushaq exports have also begun and Virtus production was not much in the last month. Hence this month both Virtus and Taigun numbers have doubled while Slavia has halved and Kushaq has grown.

I am not sure if we can judge the performance of Skoda and VW separately. Slavia sales have stabilized and the wait times have come down, while Virtus still has some waiting especially for the GT. Hence we need to look at it as one company, which in theory it is. If you see the totals this FY, it hovers around 7k cars. Sometimes 8k and last month 6k. Hence, thats what would be a picture of the actual performance of the company.

I feel demand is rather the same but its the supply that fluctuates. Perhaps that depends on how the production planner of either brand fight with each other in the meeting room every month to decide who gets how much capacity But in general, they are pretty much hit with the touch screen head unit shortage, Ukraine war and now the European economic crisis.
