Re: A Close Look | Red Dark Edition of the Tata Safari & Harrier

4 years after Harrier started production, we have a 1L milestone coming up. Happy to see but is this worth celebrating?

Anything is worth celebrating if your standards are not as high as a Hyundai or Mahindra

Doesn't the XUV 5+7 seat, Diesel + Petrol variants do similar volumes to the diesel only Harrier/Safari line up?

Similar volume as XUV700 petrol+diesel, and this is the first Tata car that has tasted success at such a high price point. Let’s not forget that only a few years ago, Tata meant cheap leaky broken down taxi cars. And even when they actually made superbly capable and sorted products like Hexa and Safari Store, hardly anyone was open to buying them. Harrier-Safari have brought the brand forward and made the idea of a 25-30L Tata car acceptable. Something that was inconceivable 5 years ago.

Re: Tata Harrier production crosses the 1 lakh unit milestone

From consumer point of view, it may not be something worth celebrating considering the constant niggles still being faced by owners 4 years down the line.

However from company's standpoint, it's a milestone certainly. A grounds up new product on a completely new platform (you could argue about LR origins, but Tata had to rework it completely including materials used) and that too a 'desirable' one which helped Tata pitch their products to 20-30L bracket clientele. The Harrier twins had a big role in sprucing up the image of Tata Motors.

Didn't the Harrier have a two year headstart over the XUV700 (notwithstanding the pandemic)?

Not to say the Harrier/Safari have gone through a facelift, new variants, editions and also spill over sales from Mahindra's ludicrous waiting period. Yet the XUV700 has beaten the Harrier to the 1 lakh production mark by a month.

Despite being the older model the monthly sales are neck and neck.

XUV700 sales you speak of is all variants including 5&7 seats, Harrier is solely the 5 seat variant, excludes the 7 seat Safaris.

Maybe there are some months, but AFAIK, the XUV700 was always a little ahead in the sales number when you take into account both the Harrier and Safari. If you look at Harrier numbers alone, then the XUV700 is way ahead and Safari sales is not even half of XUV700 sales.

So leave that the XUV700 has 5 and 7 variants with two engine options and AWD option too, Tata needs two different models (Harrier and Safari) to even be near the XUV700 sales number.

Re: Tata Harrier production crosses the 1 lakh unit milestone

This quickly turned into a Harrier + Safari v/s XUV700 5s+7s battle. Maybe if we zoom out a little bit and even throw the other mass market cars, say, Nexon and XUV300, the scales will balance out again.

You might not have noticed, the Safari is the 7 seat variant of the Harrier, it's not two 'different' models?!

Going terribly offtopic.

I mostly use Harrier+/Gravitas as I refuse to sully the Safari name. But used Safari here to be politically correct.

Unlike the XUV700 which has 5 seater and 7 seater on the same body, the 7 seater Harrier has a different body and TATA for all intents and purposes markets it as a separate model.

Different body? Really?

It is a win in my books that an Indian brand has consistent sales in a price segment that people would be more reluctant to part with their money. And the twins manage to keep pace with the newer competition and not fade away.

A "head start" doesn't mean anything other than the model is older. And when an older model is still neck to neck with newer competition its still commendable.

Re: Tata Harrier production crosses the 1 lakh unit milestone

Great achievement

As far as this XUV 700 vs Harrier sales debate is concerned, we'll need to bear in mind that Mahindra cracked this segment way back in 2011 with XUV 500. Tata, couldn't do it despite numerous effort until they launched Harrier with 170 ps engine and automatic gearbox. Thus this 100k sales milestone is a great one for them. Finally with Harrier/Safari combo Tata has now become a bona fide player in 20-30 lac premium segment.
