NGT rejects SPG plea to extend life of 3 Prime Minister’s vehicles

NGT rejects SPG plea to extend life of 3 Prime Minister’s vehicles

Source: Indian Express

Quote:
The SPG had approached the NGT with a prayer to “direct Transport Department, NCT of Delhi/Registering Authority to allow extension of registration period of Specialized Armoured Vehicles (03 Nos.) by five years i.e. till 23/12/2029”... <snip> Manufactured in 2013 and registered in December 2014, the three Renault MD-5 specialised armoured vehicles, according to the order, have in the last 9 years covered only about 6,000 km, 9,500 km and 15,000 km respectively “as they are being used only for specific tactical purpose”

In its order dated March 22, the NGT principal bench of chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member Dr A Senthil Vel, which rejected the SPG application, cited the Supreme Court’s October 2018 order that banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years from plying on the roads of Delhi NCR.
At last, glad to see the law (SC order) being applied uniformly. However, it's again burden on us. Citing NGT order, SPG will requisition new vehicles billed out of tax payers money.

This is a case where the letter of the law has been followed and not the spirit of the law. These vehicles should have been exempted from the 10 year restriction, considering the minimal environmental impact, and the huge costs involved in replacement. It is not like all restrictions (like speed limits) apply to the Prime Minister's vehicles.

In addition to costs involved, the environmental impact for producing new vehicles would be much higher than the impact due to running of these vehicles.

Also, if you were to only consider the pollution caused by these vehicles, will they order the Delhi police to issue fines/confiscate the PM's vehicles considering that there is a slim chance of these vehicles undergoing annual pollution testing?

Re: July 2016: NGT tells Delhi to deregister all Diesel Vehicles over 10 years old

Just came across this:

https://inshorts.com/en/news/ngt-rej...-1711608517844

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has rejected a prayer by the Special Protection Group (SPG) to extend the registration of three diesel-run specialised armoured vehicles “needed for the specific purpose of security of the Prime Minister”.

IMHO what a stupidity this is. I am all for equal law for everyone but what is NGT trying to do here? This will result in 3 new fuel guzzler armored monsters to be added to the road and the impact on environment will be hugely net negative.

C'mon folks, for VIPs and head of states there is already lot of carbon footprint and you can't do much about it. For some it is necessary too. This is pure symbolism and nothing else. And what a monumental waste of public money.

World is really a strange place!

The purpose of the system is what it does, basically, some "expert" decided that new vehicles pollute less than using existing ones. I'm glad we can contribute to this waste through our taxes, which also pay for these fresh air quangos, who held up highway development and directly kneecapped our defense capability.

Re: July 2016: NGT tells Delhi to deregister all Diesel Vehicles over 10 years old

The NGT has rejected a plea by the Special Protection Group (SPG) to extend the life of three diesel vehicles used by the Prime Minister. The NGT considered the application which stated that all these vehicles though completing 10 years very soon are low on mileage. The three are of Renault make, model MD-5 having run 9000, 9500 and 15000 kms respectively. These Specialised Armoured Vehicles are being used for the PM's security.

The SPG had asked for extending their life till 2029, but the NGT cited the order from the Supreme Court of October 2018 that bans re-registration of any diesel vehicle in the NCR after ten years.

The same law is applicable to one and all and once a matter is in a court of law, what applies to the common man also applies to the mighty. The mighty need to be role models and not "relaxation asking, exceptional models". They need to walk the talk to set examples.

This is called "Literal Interpretation" in law... refuge for the fools IMO.

Considering the costs involved, low running & secrecy related to VIP security they could have decided otherwise, but then in Indian judiciary none is accountable for the unlimited powers they have.

Another mis-understanding by our Honourable courts and Judges. Better sense should have prevailed and as pointed, literal interpretation is amounting to literal foolishness. And if interpretation of the law is fair and uniform then why do the VIP, VVIP vehicles still sport black films.

These judgements don't make any sense just like the blanket ban on sun protection films of all kind.

The Bangalore fire force have run into problems since all the fire engines are more than 15 years old, although they are in servicable condition.

Re: NGT rejects SPG plea to extend life of 3 Prime Minister’s vehicles

If they allow them, they have to allow every car which has a similar odometer reading and as we all know odometer tempering is not rocket science. The whole 10 year ban will go for a toss and please note, the ban is in terms of age and not any other condition viz. mileage, whether polluting or not etc.

What a waste of resources! In 10 years, the highest of the 3 ran only 15,000kms and they are asking for an extension of another 5 years only. Now, they'll scrap the vehicles and the cost of emissions in manufacturing and then further modifying will be much higher than the tailpipe emissions of these old vehicles running another 5 years.

I see it the other way. If NGT 'does not approve' this 'request' by SPG, how else would babus go ahead with new deals, which run into crores.

On a brighter side, masses would get to see newer, more modern and safer wheels with the top honchos.

It's lovely for the boys who get to play with them maybe, as they're not paying for it!

For the cost of acquiring 3 brand new armoured vehicles, we could have built computer labs in schools, bought ventilators in hospitals and laid new roads for many many kilometers! Sky is the limit for wishful thinking, isn't it!?
