Personally, I would prefer the annual net revenue and net profits, though. Based on those parameters, Mahindra is wayyyyyy ahead of Hyundai and TaMo and was the second largest automobile manufacturer in India in 2024-2025.
1)
No shifting of goalposts here. Retail sales figures have always been considered as an important yardstick in the higher echelons of automotive industry management.
I haven't paid much attention to TaMo or Hyundai being considered #2 based on production figures, but I know that TaMo shall never allow unsold stock beyond a small limit. The shock of 1999 when the erstwhile Telco almost sank under the weight of unsold stock shall never be forgotten.

2)
Net revenue can be one of the heads. Let's add customer satisfaction index , safety rating (average of the entire range), compliance to E20 and beyond, percentage of alternative green fuels vehicles in total sales to the mix.

I have a genuine question. Does SIAM or the Commerce/ Industry ministry officially declare a manufacturer as the annual #1 based on production figures?

I also find it a bit strange that while I quoted @volkman10 and had a query he has not responded and others are coming out with responses to refute me.

Team-BHP prides itself about the forum's neutral stance. In accordance with that , it would be better if statistics are presented in the same tone. If the "leaving in the dust" part had not been there, I would have probably just glanced at the post and moved on.

Anyway, I have said what I wanted to , so am moving on from this discussion, won't be responding further here.

Thank you all, wish you a pleasant and safe ride always.

In a 100m sprint, we just see who crosses the line first. We do not bring in parameters like who makes a better husband, who scored more in maths in high school etc. Do we?

All these years nobody was complaining when TaMo was adjudged as No 2 in sales based on factory despatch numbers. When Mahindra does the same thing, suddenly so many parameters are brought in.

We have seen in last months of calendar year 2024 that unsold inventories was more with Tata Motors and relatively less with Mahindra, in fact, most models of Mahindra has a waiting list, making inventory pile-up less likely. I don't believe TaMo or Hyundai have such waiting lists, hence Mahindra is less prone to inventory pile-up compared to TaMo and Hyundai.

If Mahindra is indeed piling up inventories just as a PR stunt, it is a bad business decision and they will pay the price. But if the price is not huge, what stops Hyundai and TaMo from doing the same thing?

All these are besides the point. The basic point made is that the goalposts need not be changed when someone else is succeeding. Period.

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

Retail Data for April:

FADA's April 2025 retail data show Hyundai secured a market share of 12.47%, representing a substantial contraction from the 14.29% it commanded in April 2024. This 1.82 percentage point decrease is particularly notable when compared to the performance of its closest competitors:

> Market leader Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominant position with 39.44% market share, though this also represented a marginal decline from 40.39% in the previous year.

> Mahindra & Mahindra significantly strengthened its position, capturing 13.83% of the market, up from 11.23% a year earlier—a remarkable 2.6 percentage point improvement.

>Tata Motors holds 12.59% market share, down slightly from 13.61% in April 2024.

Quote:
In absolute numbers, Hyundai retailed 43,642 vehicles in April 2025, a significant 11.37% decline from the 49,243 units sold in April 2024. This contrasts sharply with Mahindra's performance, which registered 48,405 vehicles—an impressive 25.09% growth over the 38,696 units from the same period last year.

This is really massive.

https://www.financialexpress.com/aut...elers/3864348/

Mahindra has overtaken Tata Motors monthly sales in May 2025 by almost 11,000 units!

According to the quoted source, Mahindra sold 52,431 cars in May 2025 and Tata motors has managed to sell only 41,557 cars in May 2025.

Auto dispatches for May-25.

Safe to say Mahindra has established itself as the #2 player comfortably, for now. I don't see anything happening with Hyundai or Tata in the near future to change this.

I hope Tata Sierra changes the fortune (in the volume game) of Tata Motors and second position will be more compete.

20-30L is where all the action is and Mahindra has most number of vehicles in this price band.

1. XUV700
2. ScorpioN
3. Roxx
4. BE6
5. XEV9
6. Thar

Mahindra invested on right products at right time and is paying them back quite well.

Why MOM for Maruti selectively? Here are the YoY percentages (May 2024 vs May 2025).
  • Maruti: -5.5%
  • Mahindra: +21%
  • Hyundai: -10.7%
  • Tata: -11%
  • Toyota: +22%
  • Kia: +14.4%

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

The competition is set to heat up towards the end of the year, with several exciting (rumoured) launches on the horizon:

From Tata:
  1. New Altroz
  2. Harrier EV
  3. Tata Sierra
  4. Updated Harrier/Safari with the 2.0L diesel

From Hyundai:
  1. Updated Venue
  2. New Tucson

From Mahindra:
  1. Updated XUV 3XO
  2. XUV700 Electric

Exciting times ahead indeed—looks like a great time to be in the market for a new car in India!

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

Mahindra's ascent to India's No.2 Car brand. ( ref. to May sales)

> Mahindra's are representing 21% year-on-year growth and establishing a comfortable lead over both Hyundai and Tata.

> Mahindra's focused strategy on utility vehicles has paid dividends, with domestic volumes significantly exceeding both Korean and Indian competitors.

> Hyundai reclaims third position in India's domestic market after three-month slide.

> Hyundai remains in Nr.2 when domestic+ exports are included.

> Tata Motors' fourth position, with an 11% year-on-year decline, indicates the company faces challenges despite its electric vehicle leadership and strong SUV portfolio including the Nexon and Harrier.

> Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate with approximately 40% market share, the battle for second place has intensified significantly. Mahindra's domestic market share has likely crossed 15%, while Hyundai and Tata are competing in the 12-13% range.

Mahindra is strengthening its position as the second-largest manufacturer. Hyundai now has to catch up. The race appears to be shifting towards the third position, with Hyundai and Tata in contention.

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

As per Maruti's sales report, they have approximately sold 10k units to Toyota in may. So, this suggests that OG Toyota products were sold 19k units in the month of May. That's healthy.

With Mahindra almost having no competition in 20-30 lakh segment right now, Toyota's foray into this could shake things up.

What happened to Toyota's project of Elongated Corolla Cross? Is it dropped? They can even bring the Corolla Cross as it is and assemble RAV4 locally. This will for sure add 3k units to their kitty!

Re: Mahindra is now entering the race for the #2 position | Slowly closing the gap to Hyundai & Tata

Mahindra was already the No.2 car manufacturer in India in the last FY in terms of revenue and profits. Now they have taken the No.2 spots in dispatch numbers too.

This was due for the last 1 year. Mahindra always had the bookings. The monthly numbers were lower only due to production constraints.

The real surprise (shock) has been Hyundai/ TaMo numbers going below 45K. I was expecting all 3 of them to clock between 48K-52K sales per month.

If Mahindra can increase their production capacity, they should launch the facelifted Marazzo (with toned down design elements and updated interiors) and ICE XUV400 as early as possible. These 2 will get them additional 6k-8k sales per month (despite cannibalization) easily. Selling 60,000 cars per month is definitely possible for Mahindra.

And they should consider launch facelifted (toned down) KUV100 too as a competitor to Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
