However, Maruti has several offerings, such as Ertiga, Eeco, and Dzire, that dominate their niches with virtually no competition. Targeting the fleet taxi segments have really helped maruti's fortunes. By spending minimally on marketing and promotions, these models generate impressive margins, but excluding them highlights the struggles Maruti faces in the broader market.
You missed Wagonr. But you have made the right point. Fleet purchases account for a very large section of Ertiga, Wagonr, Eeco and Dzire sales numbers. It is a win-win situation for both Maruti and Fleet operators though. Fleet sales helps Maruti with good sales numbers to keep its market share while operators get cheap, reliable and fuel efficient vehicles which helps them with their operations.

Yes, I get your point.
Last year I faced the same dilemma while upgrading from my i10, and finally went for XL6 because family liked that car over Ertiga.
My shortlisting experience: I wanted to purchase Ertiga Zxi+ AT but family liked XL6 so then it was between XL6 Zeta AT & Alpha+ MT. All of these models were in the same onroad price range. I prioritized features over automatic transmission and hence finalized Alpha+ AT variant in Splendid Silver colour.

Is there any way to find out about the Hybrid sale for a month? This will give us a good idea of the adoption rate between hybrids and EVs in the Indian market.

Suzuki discontinued the Baleno in Europe and the UK back in 2020 as it was a sales flop. Here, if we count the Baleno, Glanza, Fronx and Taisor as nearly the same car, it is by far and away their most popular vehicle/s in India, and indeed the most popular of any manufacturer. On the other hand the Jimny remains on life support for all the excitement around it abroad. Manufacturers really have their work cut out for them serving different markets.

I feel it has to do with the lack of marketing from Honda's side. My family bought the Elevate recently and before this car search we were simply unaware of the existence of such a car. You see so many ads of the VW/Skoda twins, Grand Vitara on the TV, YouTube and radio but Honda's marketing has been completely silent.

Only recently I am seeing some ad campaigns on radio. Maybe Honda is doing this on purpose and trying to use India only for production and sell mostly to Japan.

Any reason why the numbers dont include the likes of BMW, MB? At least MB and BMW are selling more than Jeep and very close to Citroen numbers.

Re: August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It is surprising that despite offering discounts of between 2-3 Lakh, sales of Harrier, Safari and Hector haven’t improved. That’s one of the things about giving discounts - the RTO charges still apply to the original value. And these 3 models had gotten overpriced since 2023-24. Especially when compared to the specs, offerings and pricing from Mahindra.

Without offering discounts, Scorpio is doing more than double the number of the other 3 models combined.

Re: August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I did some further analysis to see the dealer inventory build up of top 6 manufacturers till Aug'24

August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-salesinven1.png

Here are my thoughts on all manufacturers

1. Mahindra is doing a stellar job. Dealer inventory for this year is much less than average monthly of sales
2. Kia, Maruti and Tata are also going ok. Dealer inventory for this year is less than average monthly of sales
3. Hyundai has almost reached 30 days of dealer inventory. Dealer inventory for this year is almost equal to average monthly of sales
4. Toyota is doing really bad. The dealer inventory stands are 1.6 times the average monthly sales.

And interesting thing with Toyota is that their own models like Fortuner, Innova are on waiting periods so all this inventory is re-badged models

Re: August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for sharing this interesting analysis.

The data is from April to Aug'24 or any other month you have considered.

Also, i spoke to few dealers of Maruti and Tata and majority of the inventory is of Hatchback for Maruti and SUVs (Harrier/Safari) for Tata's.

Last month a Fada report was mentioning 65 days of PV inventory at dealers whereas above analysis questions FADA report.

The FADA reports, although are factual, but do not always present the right picture of sales as they completely ignore W.I.P sales and rely only on registrations completed at RTO in any given month, resulting in retail sales towards the end of the month being completely neglected.
In India, it is a common practice for a hard push to meet targets to be given only towards the end of the month/quarter.

Also, FADA, like SIAM is a lobby group with its own vested interests and agendas. Already there are conflicts reported in media about inventory quoted by OEMs/SIAM and FADA. I for one do not know the right picture.

Rather it is better to look at data over a longer term of 6 months or 1 year, at least, to make better sense of things.

The above data is for calendar year - Jan'24 to Aug'24. FADA also uses Vahan data for registration. I have also used the data from Vahan dashboard only.

Sorry my miss, there is an issue in Toyota. Data is not as bad as it looks. Attaching corrected numbers. Still it is worse than the rest

Re: August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I pulled RTO registration data from Telangana site for August-2024 and aggregated data for Creta and Seltos. I have been interested to do some analysis on lowering sales of Seltos.

Diesel vs Petrol registrations

Seltos sale is 46% of what Hyundai sold

Registrations by gearbox type
Legend for gearbox type names:
CVT - 1.5 NA Petrol IVT
DCT - 1.5 Turbo Petrol DCT
Manual - 1.5 NA Petrol Manual
TC - 1.5 Diesel Torque Converter

- Manual - Primary sale of both Creta and Seltos is Manual transmission. Seltos sells just 120 units vs 367 Creta which is about 32.7% of Creta sales.
- Petrol CVT - Second highest sale is Petrol CVT gearbox for Creta. This is where Seltos loses again with just 32 Seltos vs 163 Creta
- Diesel TC - Seltos is just 4 units behind Creta. Both are selling in almost equal numbers
- Petrol DCT - Seltos leads by large margin here. 53 Seltos DCT vs only 6 Creta DCT.
- Petrol CVT and Diesel TC are popular gearbox in Creata in August.
- Creta DCT sold in mediocre numbers. Will need to get some historical data for past 2-3 months to confirm this observation.

Registrations by Fuel and Gearbox type
Legend for gearbox type names:
CVT - 1.5 NA Petrol IVT
DCT - 1.5 Turbo Petrol DCT
Manual - 1.5 NA Petrol Manual
TC - 1.5 Diesel Torque Converter
August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-screenshot-20240912-234252.png
- Seltos lags behind Creta in Diesel manual, Petrol CVT and Petrol manual sales

Seltos registration drilldown by model, fuel and gearbox
August 2024 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis-screenshot-20240913-001533.png
- Diesel Manual - Creta sales are coming from base (E variant), S(O) and SX(O). Seltos loses sales in all variants and Kia is still not providing Diesel manual in GTX trims.
- Petrol CVT - Creta gains 98 SX(O)+38 SXTech = 136 units in Petrol CVT sales. This is where Seltos has no top of the line CVT and also does not have a second top CVT model with ADAS
- Petrol Manual - Seltos loses sales despite cost being slightly lesser than Creta

I don’t know why Honda doesn’t show any staying power with their vehicles. Why did they discontinue the Civic in India? Even if it sold just a few hundred units a year, it looked good in the showrooms and gave them a premium look on the roads. A huge company can afford to sell a few hundred vehicles at a discount in order to create a cachet effect. Similarly, they needlessly discontinued the Civic Hybrid earlier. Imagine if Honda and Toyota had taken a little loss and pushed hybrids in India from 2005 onwards? They could have become pioneers in the segment and it could have led to a lot of sales down the road.
