They may try and do their own version. IP protection (patents etc) mean nothing in China. However, the real bottom line will be cost, ie. will they be able to make an equivalent product at a lower cost?

Tata will be able to price it so low because they indend to sell large volumes. In fact, one can expect the Nano to become the largest selling car in the world. If a Chinese manufacturer decides to do it on the same scale as Tata, they will be able to match Tata on price. Technically, there is nothing extremely innovative about the Nano - it is all pricing driven. In fact, Ratan Tata once said that the key about China is that they do things on a grand scale to lower costs. If anything, Tata has take a leaf from the Chinese and replicated their ultra large scale philosophies in the Nano.

am not aware of the reliability of chinese clones...that may be safe..but i feel they lack in design and finishing...

even pulsar clone gulsar doenst look attractive as pulsar...why cant they make more attractive design even though they copy..

Amico Industrial Group

The Bike Chronicles of India: Chinese Copies of the Bajaj Pulsar..!!

they may be king in mass replicating minus finishing..

The car hasn't been launched yet. It's merely been unveiled.
Launch will take another 8-9 months, may be more, given the situation in West Bengal.

there is nothing great about the one lac car in terms of design to be honest...

the greatest achievement of tata in launching this car is the fact that it is cheap
if chinese manage to get a car that is as cheap as this ,that will be as threat or nano even if it does not look same

designs gat copied only when chinese feel that they can launch/produce a same looking car for a cheaper price
so far all the chinese copies car cheaper than their originals

so even if nano is copied it is still a challenge to still a challenge to price it below the nano

for example when the chinese copied the chery QQ is was actully cheaper than the chevy spark
so i hope you guys got my point

The great chinise R&D

This is good that these guys are always busy doing their R&D.
I mean "Receive" & "Duplicate". This keeps other's (OEM) on their toes.

Chinese might do a cheap 1-lakh equivalent of a car. There are some things that TATA might have done to reduce the expenses (less joints, hollow stuff etc.,)
But don't think that its a great piece of auto that nobody else couldn't do if they want to.
If other manufacturers (in Japan, Europe, US) get energized to build low cost cars, we might be getting a lot better cars in future. That is one great thing about this car. Of course TATA itself might better its car through experience.
Toyota iQ car is one which looks so cool inspite of being small. Chinese might copy that car (atleast the shape).

rediff.com: Nano
By Tata, Everone knows about it

rediff.com:Chery QQ3
Chery Automobile, the Chinese car manufacturer, is a name to reckon with in the Chinese passenger car industry. Its Chery QQ3 is a city car that hit the market in 2003. In China, it is sold for 29,000-50,000 Remnibi, while internationally it is priced at $5,000.

Chery QQ3 comes equipped with antilock brake systems, dual front airbags, power windows and a Euro-III compliant engine. It comes with air-conditioning.

A five-door hatchback, Chery QQ3 is spacious and a sleek-looking car with ample storage area.

Maruti -800 --> From maruti
Everyone knows about it

So I am wondering, if Chinese removed ABS, dual front airbags, power windows & AC, then price may come near Nano :(

With the Russian Space Program itself being successfully copied down to the last bolt of the Soyuz rocket, the Chinese copying a comparitively puny 600 cc car is anyone's guess. And yes, it will be cheaper than the original due to the lower cost of manufacturing there.

Where the TATAs have rethought of everything is the carmaking and distribution process. Its proven by now that India's major strength is process management/innovation and that is NOT replicable by merely tearing down and copying the Nano. The eceonomies of scale part the Chinese might do equally well or better, but the process re-engineering - well - even all the veterans are all at sea to try and understand how TAMO managed this.

Chances are that the first batch of Nano might be the PIRATED ones.
