i was very close to picking up one a few years ago. loved the car and every thing - that particular car was inn good shape, but sadly the agent was asking for too much, simply because he changed the tires. And did a bad job at that as well.

The car is still a daily commute. Its robust solidly built and is still running sans any serious hassles to its owner. Some engine pictures-its a transversely fitted 2.0 L diesel with a turbocharger!

This engine seems to pretty un-touched ,Original Diesel pump seems stil operational , seeing the clutch reminds me , each clutch cable costs 4K , turobo costs 38K , but a pleasure to drive , gives an average of 14 in city with AC , and around 20+ on high way , had the car for close to 7 years.

Why would anyone want to buy this car today? IMO the Standard 2000 was a better looker.

Did the number end with 28? Then it probably once belonged to Indra-Slk or his uncle.

The S-2000 may have been a better looker, yet the Montego would leave it dead on the performance front. Where the Montego had a super quick turbo-diesel, the S-2000 suffered from an anemic petrol mated to a jugaad (Matador!!) gearbox. Give me the Montego any which day. It was the fastest diesel car of its time.

.
Come on!!! The Std. 2000 and the Rover were from 2 different ages! The 2000 was like a car of the 70s - 80s and the Rover was a 90s car.

@GTO: I wouldn't mind buying one for, say, 20k -30k Only problem is driving a flood hit car not run for 15+ years all the way from Bombay to Bangalore.

This car is grounded due to want of some spares but may spring back to life again.I will then take it out for a spin and report about my test drive here.

Re: Spotted a Sipani/Rover Montego

Thanks man for uploading this, how i miss Auto India.I still believe it was one of the best auto magazines in india.

Their quality of writing, the information given is better than what is dished out in todays 500 page-150 bucks magazines of which half of the pages are ads.

We have come such a long way with regard to motoring in this country!

The other day i saw a well maintained white coloured Montego estate in bangalore.

Re: Spotted a Sipani/Rover Montego

A Rover Montego spotted in Mahabaleshwar, appears to be in a good running condition. The red band along the bumper is original I believe- it used to come with such an ornamentation:
