Trivia:
  • The entire project from the conceivement of idea (september 1995) to the final production car (january 1998) took just about 28-30 months, nothing less than an achievement for a first time passenger car maker.
  • The Indica platform spawned many concepts like the aria coupe and roadster, 330 bhp silhouette track car, yellow indica sports and indigo advent (pseudo SUV a-la palio adventure), but sadly none of them were marked for production.
  • IIRC, the entire project cost Tata only about 300 crore, one of the lowest in the world in 1998.
  • The old gen indica is produced in an assembly line that tata purchased second hand for dirt cheap cost from an abandoned Peugeot plant in Austria (correct me if I am wrong in this).
  • In contrast, the new gen Vista is made in an entirely new generation assembly line with the most modern robotic welding procedures in Fiat/ tata's JV plant in Ranjangaon, Pune, on the same flexible assembly line as the Grande Punto, as a result the quality, fiat and finish is a sea change from the indicas that were rolled out 11 years ago.

sid, that's a nice writeup. You are obviously passionate about the Indica. Was the Indica in your shorlist when you recently bought the Jazz?

Great effort Sidindica.

Mr. Ratan Tata, a visionary. True son of the soil. My respect for Tata has gone up after reading your article.

However, I fully agree with you. Customer care and after sales service should be their top priority.

Sid, Thanks for the writeup

IIRC ( I read some article on the making of Indica V1) the second hand assembly line was from a Nissan Australian plant.

With each iteration of a car model, it is only natural that the evolves for better. With Indica also in its Vista iteration the positive evolution took place just the same way evolution did for various Honda models.

1976 when the first iteration of Accord came to existence and now in 2009 the Eighth iteration of Accord. Accord remains an Accord for Honda since 1976.

Why we should be so upset on seeing Tata retaining to its car Indica. I think Tata is rightly evolving in right direction by proudly retaining the car model name which gave them so much name and fame.

The V2 petrol was unfortunatly a grossly underrated car but those who own it absolutely love it. For that price, there wasn't simply another car which showed the alto 1.1 a clean pair of heels. 0-100 in 13.5 seconds, 1400 cc, 75 bhp, 11-12 kmpl, what more could you want?
Salil, your car deserves better looking 14" alloys rather than those ugly (no offence) steel rims and your Indica will look wicked. Because those Gen 1 pre facelift Indicas are the ones which I still loved.

Paint the door handles and OSRVMS body colored, add a B-pillar blackout film and see how the car looks!
