Petrol : Honda Civic. No car like it to drive. Balanced chassis, excellent grip (especially the facelift with its stiff suspension), communicative steering, slick gearshift and a revv-happy petrol engine. Just makes me smile whenever I high-revv one.

Diesel : VW Jetta. Would have been the Laura, if not for Skoda's pathetic after-sales support.

Honda Civic is my all time favorite and is the is only Honda car I ever liked!! If I was in 40's I would have voted for VW Jetta.

Tough choice between the Civic ( Proven) and the Jetta ( German engineering/road presence/solid build). My vote to the Jetta

The Jetta for me. Understated, well built, solid! Very underrated, I might add

My favorite is Laura TSi, its a perfect allrounder which beats every car in the segment by its europeon sturdy feel, decent space, amazing performance, class best refinement, quality feel, great ride and handling balance and still good FE. only loses out on aftersales support. Cars cannot get better than this in this segment. Six speed DSG from Superb would make the package even better.

I like the Laura 1.8 TSi most but given the condition of Skoda's aftersales service, its not the safest bet. Jetta has a very weak service network which doesn't works well in its favour. The Cruze is new and nice but I don't prefer buying a GM car (no offence to anyone). The Civic is good but too low and low on fuel-efficiency. The Altis manages to balance comfort, ride, space, handling, performance, looks, fuel-economy and maintenance quite well. Moreover the value and peace of mind of the Toyota badge work tremendously towards its favor. No wonder its the best selling car in the market today. The Altis for me anyday.

Altis for me. Ranks very high on reliability and lags a bit behind Cruze feature-wise. Overall, it would tight to select between Cruze and Altis. Civic is only a drivers car (afaik) but lags behind in all terms compared to Altis and Cruze. Ruled out Laura because of Skoda brand.

Don't be annoyed at Skoda brand. Its their service agents whom you should be annoyed at.Trust me.

Get a good service station and nothing beats it, just nothing.
+1 to the above, add fantastic handling - a sure-footedness that is delightful and a very very good FE, throw in a 15K km service interval and it is a winner all the way.

Cheers,
