Andhra Pradesh : Increase of 'Lifetime Tax' from 9% to 12%?

Hi fellow BHPians!

I'd like to know if you've heard of hikes of some 'life tax' for new cars from 9% to 12%.

This was informed by the Chevy salesguy when my friend and I went for a TD of the Beat. This increase alone accounts for an increase of the price from something like 4.04 on road to 4.15 for the BEAT LS Version in Hyderabad.

I've also got an SMS from the Chevy showroom asking me to book early to avoid this. Are any of you guys aware of what this is? And exactly when this is supposed to be in effect?

Thanks much!
~Raj

Any clues anyone? (Sorry for the bump.. but I've heard this is supposed to be in effect from Feb). And perhaps applicable only to Andhra Pradesh?

For a matter of fact this is for AP only. Thanks to the TG and United Andhra agitations. The government could not sustain the losses due to the bandhs and planned of this tax increase.

I also heard that from Feb this is going to come into effect. If you wish to take a car better rush. Only few days are left.

It was indeed increased to 12% in AP. I do not know the effective date.

But be happy , here in karnataka cars below 5 lakhs pay 13.2% and above 10 lakhs some thing around16 or 18%

So far in AP, 9% is the life tax on the first vehicle and 12% is the life tax if you are buying a second vehicle on the same name. Not sure if this is changing. There seems to be no news or notification on the AP Transport website as well. (Welcome To TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT GOVERNMENT OF ANDHRAPRADESH - INDIA)

@Quadmaniac: Is Beat going to be your second vehicle?

Cheers.

The tax rates in Karnataka are

cost of the vehicle below 5 lakhs 12%
5 - 10 lakha 13%
above 10 lakhs 16%

in addition there is cess of 10% on the tax rate

with cess it works out 13.2, 14.3 and 17.6% respectively

Seeing this, all states may follow a tax increase?

at present we (kerala) have 6% uniform Life tax (for 15 years), but looking other
states this may also be increased in the near future??

Hi Raj,
there were two things that got changed in January(Hyderabad).
1)Vat - 12.5 % to 14.5 % so the ex-show room price will increase a little bit.
2)Road tax - 9% to 12%

My friend booked a swift car.In December on-road price was around 5.9L.Now he is paying around 25K more.

Thanks for the info Reddy@Hyd

I just enquired - apparently the tax needs to be given on date of delivery (not date of booking). So it's too late already! :(
