Dr,

No manufacturer have an One india price hence there is bound to be spillovers from one category to the other. The prices you have mentioned are just an indicative one and not as per the city/area. Hence it is better that we state the sedans most best suited for the price range, what say?

6 - 8 - Ford Fiesta 1.6 (I am probably bised having bought one, but thats my opininon), close second Manza Diesel Aura+ real VFM
8 - 10 - ANHC,(again may offshoot in Mumbai), close second is VW Vento (though its only a speculation at this point in time)

Actually the prices mentioned are for Mumbai. Anyway, I am OK with generic indicative prices because often there are discounts/special deals and hence the boundaries can be crossed.

In fact, I am of the opinion that these price segments mentioned do not make sense. We need to define segments such that the available cars get separated into nice clusters. The cluster boundaries will be decided by the data itself and not in an ad-hoc way. I will do some work on this on the weekend and try to present the results here.

@mikon, used cars make a lot of sense and your list of used cars is pretty impressive. I do believe in the philosophy of "lateral upgrade" so nicely presented by GTO. However, used cars is a different discussion altogether.

Thanks,
-AD

Underestimation of prices of Audi A4

Thank you all for your replies.

It is interesting to note how many have selected Audi A4 in 25-30L range. While this shows the aspirational power of this car, it also shows some underestimation of its prices.

According to ACI August 2010 issue, the OTR prices of A4 in Mumbai range from the cheapest of 34.15L for 1.8 TFSI to the costliest of 46.94L for 3.0 TDI.

I am myself a big fan of A4 and had it indeed been in 25-30L range, I would have selected it in the first place without even considering X-Trail.

Thanks,
-AD

P.S. I don't mean to say that X-Trail is any less good; it is a very capable and fantastic vehicle in its own right.

This is what I would buy.

4-6 : Chevy Beat LT
6-8 : Hyundai i20 Asta 1.2
8-10 : SX4 A/T (but this might shift to Vento)
10-14 : Cruze M/T
14-20 : Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI
20-25 : Chevrolet Captiva LT M/T
25-30 : BMW 320d CE

@ Dr. AD : I think the C220 CDI EE just crosses 30L OTR Mumbai, while the 320d CE is 28.71L OTR Mumbai IIRC.

True. 320d CE is indeed 28.71L OTR in Mumbai. However, I thought that this CE is sold only to fleet owners. In fact, I remember seeing a C&B episode where they reviewed this car and mentioned that it is only sold to fleet owners. Maybe I am wrong about this but I surely remember hearing that.

By the way, you are the only person who selected SX4 in the 8-10L segment. Cool, I am happy ;-)) I also totally agree with you that this may shift to Vento. Let us wait and watch on that front.

Thanks,
-AD

This was from ~October '09 upto official launch in late Feb/early March 2010. Even in this period, they were being sold to individual customers alright, although all news articles and all communication claimed fleet sales only. Hey, I'm no fleet customer... they sold me one !

I genuinely believe that it's a good car, and the A/T made it better.

Great! Thanks for this information. I did not know this.

If they sell 320d CE to individuals, then it is a no-brainer. I will also update my own list now and put 320d CE in 25-30L segment. Make way X-Trail, a bimmer is coming in

Well that was A4 in delhi. But these segments got heavy discounts going on right now. All these cars have a minimum of 2-6 lacs discount as of now. Was also offered a c class for 31 after discount in Mumbai that is.

i dint consider the cedia as the less said about its A.S.S, the better. though i love the cruze, everybody complains about its turbo lag. also, the fortuner's on-road price is in 20-25L range, which is ridiculous for an innova on stilts IMO.
