GM is definitely on a roll after the success of its 10+ lakh rupee cars. The Cruze is a best-seller diesel from its segment, while the Captiva manages reasonable numbers for a CBU SUV. Not bad for a brand that also sells 3.xx lakh rupee hatchbacks. The Opel nomenclature is surely out, yet there could be a chance of the Insignia being rebadged as a Chevy for India??

@GTO: Considering the fact that they already have a car thats based on the same platform (Cruze), I dont see how this could be a new car coming into India. GM's sales figures in the 10L+ Bracket is not much and i think the Insignia is going be a 15L+ Car, not sure how the crowd would react to brand vale when they are paying that much.

This Oped Insignia seems to be a GM official's car as it is officially Gujrat registered car & even if they are testing this car, they may have got it totally covered except headlights & taillights.
The other reason that they will launch this car here is that it will be a very good competitor for their new car - Chevrolet Cruze.

.

Even before the launch of Cruze we used to see uncovered white Cruze with Gujarat reg. in Bangalore. Any idea of the engine specifications of this diesel Insignia?

Being made of the same platform makes a strong point for parts sharing and hence economy doesn't it?
Cruze is doing decent numbers with only the diesel and we are yet to see the impact of the impending petrol.
Launching it slighlty above Cruze and rebadging it is not a bad idea IMO.

The Insignia does not compete with Chevrolet Cruze, it is a segment above it. The Cruze is based on the Delta II platform, also used by the Opel Astra competing against the likes of Corolla or Civic.

The Insignia uses the Epsilon II platform sharing with the likes of the new 95, Regal and also a rumoured upcoming Cadillac. Insignia competes against the likes of Accord, Mondeo etc. Insignia only have one basic Diesel a 2.0 lt by Fiat, I think it comes in four different outputs.

Its highly unlikely it will be locally put together due to the volumes. GM India made a real hash of the last Opel Vectra, poor marketing and worser after sales back up, not to mention poor to non existent parts supply.

This is a much more accomplished car, hope GM India does justice.

Saw this car today and honestly it looks beautiful. If they launch it with the 2.8 V6 or the 2.0 turbo, this is my next car for sure. Fat chance of a big petrol engine coming to india though.

Just saw this same car parked near Hope Farm Junction outside the Savannah Sarovar hotel.

I liked the design, certainly look better in real life than in pics, no wonder it won the European Car of the Year in 2009. It also disguises its bulk as it didnt look any bigger than a Skoda Laura which was next to it.

Hope GM gives it a stonking diesel like the Cruze (of course with suitably higher output to match its higher segment).

Its an Opel Insignia, no question about it being something else, especially after looking at its pics from the front. Its not a test car as the registration number clearly states. I thought , test car usually had initials 'TC' in thier registration number plate. Inspite of whether its a private owned car or 'TC', i just love this car as its one of my favorite from the many Opel brand cars. From the front and back the insignia is a bit 'bulging out' of proportions but still good looking. This car has beautifull interiors--one of the very reasons i like this car by Opel. I am willing to hope that someday in future GM may rethink , and who knows revive The Opel brand in India.

My friend "Arjun" from Bangalore called me up turns out he saw the Insignia outside a mall parked. He did not have a camera but said that the car was right hand drive and it had a badge of CDTI on the back.

That means its a diesel yay , the possible engines can be one of the following:

2.0 CDTI Ecotec I4 1956 cc 81 kW (110 PS; 109 hp) @4000 rpm 260 N·m (190 lb·ft) @1750 rpm 12.1/12.6 190 km/h (120 mph) "Unlikely to be it 110PS is not worth it"

2.0 CDTI Ecotec I4 1956 cc 96 kW (131 PS; 129 hp) @4000 rpm 300 N·m (220 lb·ft) @1750 rpm 11.1-11.7 205 km/h (127 mph) "Unlikely to be it since Cruze gets 140PS"

2.0 CDTI Ecotec I4 1956 cc 118 kW (160 PS; 158 hp) @4000 rpm 350 N·m (260 lb·ft) @1750 rpm 9.5-10.1 218 km/h (135 mph) "Possible very possible indeed this would be my pick"

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the engine that is used is a Opel-Fiat JTD so that means that the engine make also be available to Fiat India that is a very exciting prospect because abroad this engine is used in cars like Croma and Bravo by Fiat

This seems like a good move from GM. If this is diesel and shares parts with Cruze then all the more reason to bring this sooner and pit against the bigger cars like superb, accord, camry, etc. But I hope they price it competitively too.
